Thanks for marking the trail with the falling log issue, saved someone's ankles for sure. I am headed to Aloha on the 22nd of May (2020), looking forward to fresh air and beauty for miles. One day I hope to run into you on the trail! Tootles

Beautiful area. I love the Sierras. Grew up in So.Cal. and got up there quite often. Mostly love desert hiking. More of a challenge and way less people. You really know your area.

Hi! Great video, I like that you included that permits are required. I have worked for the U.S. Forest Service for 2 years now working very hard to protect Desolation Wilderness. I understand that this video was posted 3 years ago, but I wanted to let you know that camping less than 100ft from water is prohibited in Desolation, so I was very surprised to see that not only did you do just that, but you published it online! Hopefully you have stopped doing this in our precious Wilderness. We need more protectors, not destroyers. Regardless, looks like you had a great time!

From what I understand it's also more dangerous as areas near water tend to be more frequented by predators ie. bears, etc...

I haven't hiked in a long time. I live up near the Adirondacks. I used to hike to an ice cave in the area. After seeing this i really want to start hiking again.

Thanks for the upload. I'm planning a trip like this for summer but I don't know too much about the area. Does it sound like a bad idea hiking by myself?

I just got back back from a solo 3 day trip into Desolation (twin lakes, grouse lake and Gertrude lake). If you are careful you should be fine (compass, map, common sense). Be careful crossing the streams, they were very swift and slippery. You will have a great time.

This was July 2011. Very high snow year. I swam, I almost always do. Definetly cold! But these sierra lakes always are. Make sure you have time to lay in the sun and warm up!

I just got back from 2 nights at Lake Aloha. Aloha was completely frozen over! I couldn't find another trail due to 2-3 feet of snow after Echo lakes.

Thank you for this video! I rely on these when planning my future backpacking trips. I had never even heard of Desolation Wilderness until yesterday. Can't wait to go! What month were you actually there? I'm curious if it gets warm enough to swim in the lakes.

Did you have to use a bear barrel? Or, does a bear bag meet the regulations? Most importantly, did you keep the Jack in your tent?

As a beginner, should I take someone who is experienced in backpacking and familiar to the area, or is backpacking the kind of thing where you can be a newbie and just learn as you go? I have hiked the Desolation Wilderness, but never stayed overnight. Its my goal to make this my first backpacking trip since I go to Tahoe every 3-4 months. Any advice would be great. Thanks!

looks like a good place to camp hope you enjoyed it. was your sleeping bag warm enuff ?and i know your buddy jack helped you out . how long did it take to get there ?
@LandmarkAdventures10 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, I love my warm sleeping bag. I was out there for 8 days. Just hanging out. Not really doing any distance. For me this trip was about just being out there.

I've been following your channel for a while and you have inspired me to plan my first back packing trip to desolation. Is there any books/ literature you can recommend? I'm in the planning stages but have no clue what trails might be good for a beginner, any suggestions?
@LandmarkAdventures9 жыл бұрын
Into Desolation? I would suggest Echo Lakes at Echo summit off highway 50. That'll be an easier, rolling ascent into Lake Aloha in about 6 miles. Also, from the West side, out of Wrights Lake. If you're new, avoid Eagle Falls trail head. It is straight up.

x reewind Hi! I work for the U.S. Forest Service in the district that manages Desolation Wilderness. If you have any questions you can find me on instagram: mirandaleconte, or e-mail me at mirandaleconte@gmail.com if you need help figuring out the permitting process to stay overnight in Desolation! :)

What time of the year is best to hike this area?
@LandmarkAdventures9 жыл бұрын
alienpinkbird Depends a lot on the snow year. If you're looking for CLEAR trails then the average would be July-Aug. June can be snowy (with mosquitos) but also fine (This trip was June and a HIGH snow year) Sept usually starts the wild thunderstorms and Oct definitely has snow starting. But THIS year? 2015? ... Heck, go now. I don't think there's anything up there. SUPER drought. sad.
