I felt Gamestop missed the opportunity to fill the market gap left from Toys/Babies R Us going under. I liked that they carrying a lot more merchandise. Investing in that market to make them sort of a KB Toys boutique toy store suits their existing demographic. It might have just not been doable regardless.

To the person who's struggling with retro games, I would recommend playing on a handheld of some kind. Its possible your tv has a slight lag, that is making things more difficult. Also, if you play on an emulator, you can rewind the game, and kind of "cheese it" that way.

They said "besides RPG" but honestly - depending on how retro you have to stay (I mean you can get modern games right?). RPG's are expansive! From the Final Fantasy stuff to the original Fallouts which are turn based or X-Com, Ogre Battle and Final Fantasy Tactics. Heck Mario and Rabbids on Switch! But then what about point and click adventures? There are lots of those too like Grim Fandango or i just got Chicken Police and Later Alligator on Switch. Lots of the old Lucas Arts games. And on a system like Switch there are many games that are slower paced like Animal Crossing and even Luigis Mansion. Ive played some fun fishing games which were pretty laid back. Tons of farming sims like Yonder and Story of Seasons. And getting into indie games -- there are a couple of action parts but nothing punishing in games like Night in the Woods and Spiritfarer. A fun puzzle game called Inbento which features a cat making sushi. And this would be very niche -- but if you are into anime -- there are tons of graphic story games like Danganronpa and Steins Gate. Tons of "date a girl and date a boy" games. But that might not be everyones taste.

Hey, thanks for answering my question! I'm a huge rhythm game player both Japanese and western so it was interesting to hear that Ian is actually a BEMANI player. And, yes, my screenname is based on the Mega Man character. EDIT: Oh, yeah, Elite Beat Agents is based on the Osu rhythm games, the most famous of which is free to play on PC. Pat is right in that some of the stories you have to do are really touching, including one song in the story where you're helping a little girl get over the loss of her father, and the game literally refuses to stop if you fail the song. It goes "I will not fail her". That's pretty amazing. Amplitude on PS4 is a very underrated rhythm games that's also story-based, the entire game is a concept album about a girl in a coma, and it's one of the best original soundtracks you'll ever hear in a rhythm game. I highly recommend it.

I don't think a PS2 or XBox Mini will ever happen. That generation was the first one where we really started to see a huge library of multi-platform games shared across consoles, and more often than not those games had no difference between consoles other than graphical performance/resolution. Exclusives are there of course, but the multi-platforms being almost identical takes out a lot of the excitement and identity in a mini console for me.

Oh, and having a movie rental section brings in hella foot traffic... The amount of people who would regularly stop in, while their wives were getting ice cream or food for their kids, and pick up a movie to rent and then impulse buy a retro game, like snes carts too... watch Gamestop locations become Bizarro World in Davis... I won't be surprised if movie rentals return, like physical blu ray disc covers on shelves and racks... with single pokemon cards in glass cases and displays of pops all over the floor. We just put a wall of pops near a island that is visible as you walk in, gets the children as they walk by... That owner of the Davis location is insane and Michael Burry was very confused why I'd even work for him and was pissed Gamestop couldn't survive in Davis all the sudden.

How about all the great PS1/PS2 light gun games, those are great. I do know there are a lot of disabled gamers making their own controllers to play games perfectly for themselves. GameStop doing the merchandise thing never really appealed to me at all and kind of just annoyed me. Any time I ever went to GameStop in the past it was to go buy a specific game and maybe I'll walk out with a second if I find something I like, but that was never a place I went to where I'd buy compulsively. I imagine a lot of people are like that. Just going there to buy a single game they want, not to walk out with a hoodie and a handful of plushies. The reason it annoyed me is that they were always front and center, blocking everything, making it hard to even stand in line or get to where you want to go when there's people in there. It made the place super crowded and annoying to navigate.
