I agree. I think that Katherine’s character had so much potential, but she was woefully underutilized. After Wayne’s death, Adam’s departure, and Dylan became engaged in Paris, Katherine had nothing left to cling to, except her job. She felt envious of Bree’s newfound claim to fame, and bitterness towards Bree for using some of her recipes. Instead of hooking her up with Susan’s ex husband Mike, why not give her a shot at real love with a new man? The writers easily could have written her as a divorcee with a new boyfriend (other than Mike) or given her a long lost sister or mother, with new backstory. The setup of Katherine and Mike as a couple was the beginning of the end for her character, and Dana Delaney was smart enough to see it. As much as it pains me to say this but by the time season 6 rolled around Katherine wasn’t a desperate housewife, she was a pathetic, lonely, divorcee who went off the deep end. After she finally received treatment for her mental breakdown, the writers decided to make her character suddenly develop romantic feelings for a woman. The relationship between Katherine and Robin felt very forced, and it was clear at this point that Dana Delaney wanted out. What a terrible waste of an amazingly talented actress. Katherine’s only crime was that she wasn’t one of the four core housewives, which meant she was completely expendable.

Man, when you watch the seasons a few times, Katherine's break down is pretty understandable. Had a husband who beat her consistently, her child died and Katherine had to bury her out of fear of her husband finding out. Had to keep the secret from her adopted daughter for years. Her second husband cheated on her then she thought she had found happiness with Mike only for it to be taken away. I'm team Susan and Mike 100% but damn it's rough when you put it all together.

Fun fact: dana delaney was originally considered for the role of bree, but nobody could play bree like marcia cross did. Dana was perfect for the role of katherine anyway. Everyone in this show was cast perfectly.

Nicolette James The producers made a good choice choosing Marcia over Dana to play Bree then. Marcia can play a strict/rigid character and being funny at the same time, while to me Dana cannot deliver that funny side, on every season she has been on I found her annoying and unlikable. She’s actually the only DH in the show that I couldn’t bear. However in this scene and the one when she’s with her psychologist and admits all the bad things she has done are very good

Actually, it was Dana who refused the offer since she had already played a similar character (a character "just like" Bree) in another series, so, when they were casting, she was looking for a different character. It's awesome that, seasons later, she was able to participate in Desperate Housewives anyway, bringing to us the amazing Katherine - a housewife that was even able to rival with Bree in terms of perfectionistic behaviors hihi. Dana rocks!!!

The way Mike treated her and confessed that he never loved her was messed up. Mike used her. Care what anyone says, like Katherine or not she didn't deserve they way she was treated. I learned from this series that when married couple are separated, they are often times just taking a break from each other.

Mike didn't use her though he probably did like her but he always loved Susan deep down. I think the reason he told her he never loved her was because he got so fed up of Katherine stalking him and causing trouble in his and Susan's lives. She told people Mike came onto her when Julie was in the hospital, she told Orson they slept together, she put on Susan's wedding dress and tried to ruin it, then threatened to make a scend at their wedding and actually did it. She was snooping around Susan's house all the time and ended up getting shot despite Susan shouting out a warning that she had a gun, she keyed Bree's car and then went even lower by saying nasty things about Susan to MJ and that caused Mike to finally snap and when he did Katherine set him up and put his prints on the knife and stabbed herself thats massively fucked up and I kind of lost all sympathy when she trashed Susan to MJ no matter how bad she was feeling its no excuse to upset a young child by saying nast things about his mother I get why Mike snapped

I can’t help but feel so bad for Katherine in this scene. The poor woman held onto this delusion of a life she shared with Mike, that it physically and emotionally caused her harm. I feel for her daughter having to watch helplessly as her mother has a breakdown in front of her. It doesn’t matter how old you are, when you see your parent in such a state, it’s a very helpless feeling. Dana Delany didn’t have the best material, but she delivered!

The first time I watched this bit, I didn't understand and I hated Catherine I thought Mike and Susan belonged with each other. Then, after I had an incident where I almost lost it I finally understood Catherine, her pain, her despair, her sorrow. She wasn't healthy here and Mike saying to Catherine that he never loved her and imagined Susan being with him, him leaving her just before the wedding and marrying someone without giving her a proper closure, without giving her time to go through those emotions, also she has been through a lot: her first husband was abusive, her daughter died, her second husband cheated on her, her abusive husband tried to kill her. It was a lot for a normal person to handle no wonder she lost it

I've always felt that Katherine was very similar to Bree, in the sense that they don't like to present themselves as anything less than adequate, and even try to show off a bit Katherine must've been incredibly mortifed to let Dylan see her in such a vulnerable state of mind, maybe for the first time ever

I think Katherine was very dark & cold but only because she was actually rather insecure and vulnerable which made the audience sympathise with her character. She was definitely one of the most misunderstood housewives. It was interesting when they made her a lesbian after her breakdown over Mike. I think she just wanted to explore other options as I got that feeling she gave up on men within the end. I'd say she was the most vulnerable in the group and the most misunderstood xx

It's scenes like this that make me adore Dana Delany. Yeah, her character was a bad apple, but Dana's acting is what made it all so wonderful during her run on the show. The casting people did an excellent job in picking Dana to be Katherine. I can't think of anybody else who could pull off such a terrific job in showing all of Katherine's... "crazy" sides, as well as the grief as raw as hers. Two thumbs up to Dana Delany for another riveting performance!!!

The writers and producers made a point of trying to turn Katherine into the “new Edie” aka the new villain. Poor Katherine went from being a desperate housewife to a lonely, delusional Middle Ages woman. She had excellent material in her debut season, crap in season 5, then send off material in season 6. At the very least, they could have given her a new husband or a boyfriend other than a friends ex husband. A clear set up for disaster.

Why all the hate on Susan? She's not my favorite believe me by a long shot but Katherine was the one who started everything. First by dating one of her best friends ex-husbands then while in the relationship knew that he wasn't over Susan at all! But she still tried to make Mike fall completely in love with her and forget about Susan, which she knew after dating him for awhile wasn't going to happen! Especially when he "proposed" to her and she knew that he was only doing so because Susan was getting married to that painter guy. For her to not tell Mike that Susan's wedding was fake and to text Susan pretending to be Mike and tell her he will continue to pay alimony is a desperate attempt to stay in her fantasy world. So for her to Blame Susan for "Stealing Mike" is just BullShit! I liked Kat but in Season 6 that went downhill. She should have just admitted that she knew Mike would always go back to Susan and move on, but instead she decided to act like a NUT and lose her mind.

Why all the hate on Susan? 1. for crying out loud, Julie, her daughter made almost everything at home for a long time. she could not do most things or wish not to at home - this includes doing bills, cooking, housecleaning - this is actually said by Julie in Season 4 and also in 3, when Susan scolds Julie in the episode Bang! - initally, she was down because Karl left her, but even after that, she did not do most things 2. she is constantly whining over things, and lots of those are actually her fault. For example: a. Ian' s wife was in coma, just like Mike, and so Ian and Susan had some fun in bed at times - initially, it is understandable, but Susan played both Ian and Mike, cause this continued after Mike woke up from coma b. she scolded both Mike and Ian because she could not choose between them, only after she was confronted by a psychologist 3. telling everyone to be moral, yet she is often times not moral, see above points In short, she is a hypocrite.

to be honest I never shipped Susan & Mike, she did not deserve him at all. I watched it with my boyfriend years later & even he said that Kathrine is better for Mike. She actually loved him the way he was & made him happy before Susan came along yet again after yet another failed relationship. All Susan did was driving Mike into madness because she kept wanting expensive things for MJ & herself that they just could not afford, without doing anything for it herself. She found a job by accident at the school & wanted Mike to take care of it costs just by himself before. Also she did not even wait 6 freaking months for Mike, before starting another relationship. She was a total bitch to Ian when Mike woke up, only to ran back to him when Mike could not remember who Susan is anymore & she was about to marry Ian even though she never really loved him, just to break his heart as soon as she realized that Mike could still be into her. But like Edie once said: Susan comes along with her big brown Bambi eyes & gets whatever she wants.

I don't understand people saying Susan is selfish. How? She was the only one who believed Paul Young could be a good person, and cooked him all that food (even though it got poisoned by Felicia Tillman and Susan, not the brightest bulb in the bunch, didn't notice.) She felt the most guilt after the burying of Alejandro. She tried to get her art teacher to actually be a father to his son. She tried to explain to Bree why Karl would be a horrible husband, yet also didn't judge their relationship. I love Susan! She's a hopeless romantic, optimist, always seeing the best potential in people to be good. She has a heart of gold, she's just also kind of ditzy.

I had a few problems with Susan that stood out. For starters, I didnt like the way she raised Julie, and how her teenage daughter generally showed more maturity than her. The fact that Susan was snooping on Edie and Mike, was wholly intrusive, and that led to her burning Edie's house down. Edie sought revenge, which caused Susan and Julie to be homeless for a bit. Susan oftentimes carried a big heart, but she could be illogical and careless.

I see what you're saying about the way she raised Julie, but when they finally introduced her mother, played by Lesley Ann Warren, I think it all started to make sense as to why Susan was so immature, because her mother was even more immature than she was. So with each generation, the women got stronger. I always tear up at the scene where Julie goes off for college and she tells Susan that she's a strong woman now and doesn't need Julie anymore. It's so cute! What I love about the four principal female lead characters is that each of them showed incredible growth as human beings from season 1 through season 8. Susan became more mature, Gabby having children became less selfish, Bri stepped into her own power as both a business woman and a fully sexually empowered woman - but most impressively, overcame her homophobia and went on to become an amazing mom to her gay son, and Lynette finally learned to be a little less controlling of her husband. I just love those four women!

And, although Susan gets a lot of heat for some of her behavior in Season 8, she was great in how she stepped up for MJ, after Mike's untimely death. MJ was understandably upset and started lashing out, but Susan figured out a way to curb that behavior. I agree about the 4 leads too (and, Katherine). Bree was fascinating, and I would've enjoyed seeing her rise to power based on the show's epilogue
