The story of a whistleblower. The way I see this, the guy is a whistleblower, or he's ratting on the whistleblower. Torens character represent the people hunting the whistleblower, and this guy's the middle man who's gonna get killed for being the messenger/whistleblower.. but someone is looking out for him. DeStaat means The State. I love all their songs. They all seem apolitical in some way, and their meanings are deep. Freaking love these guys. I see Witch Doctor as going after western healthcare, Kitty kitty is all about US Politics. Just amazing music.

so the dude's literally on the run, he walks into a bar and gets in trouble, we all see that, but it's what in the briefcase what I thought was strange. now I figured it out. in the briefcase is a whistle, a subtle hint that the man on the run is a whistle blower, and that makes the antagonist decide to shoot him. the fact the protagonist keeps living is a sign that he is being followed by a organisation that wants him to live and publish his story.

My interpretation has always been a bit more supernatural where this man is burdened with some kind of brand (the one in the briefcase) by one force I'll just call the Devil and target by other, more realistic forces such as the man with the gun. The man tried to kill the protagonist, but it always looked like some intervention as if the man with the gun shot himself via the Devil shielding the protragonist.

Very late reply, but Torre Florim has said in an interview that the guy doesn't die because it's impossible to undo what a whistleblower has done, even through killing him he wouldn't really make people forget the information the whistleblower leaked.

Really like how he walks into a bar where the gent is waiting on him. He realizes that something is up finishes his drink and go to the bathroom. Comes out, everone is gone. Runs to his car, it is gone. The suspense up to the gunshot was amazing. Loved this video.
