DESTER TOMATO, the best backyard beefsteak?

DESTER TOMATO
In this episode I discuss my experience growing and eating the ‘Dester’ tomato variety. Dester is a large, oblate, pink beefsteak tomato. The fruits routinely reach over 1 pound, 500 grams, and are very meaty, with few seeds. Texture is quite soft, and skin is thin, so not a great shipping tomato. Reasonably productive although like most beefsteak heirloom tomatoes, it will not set fruit in higher temperatures. It is a fairly early variety for it’s class, I was able to get ripe fruits in approximately 60-75 days. Disease resistance is better than average for an heirloom, some Septoria, but holds on a long time before succumbing. My seed source was Baker Creek.

Plants are extremely vigorous regular leaf indeterminate vines. I had 9 feet, 2.47 meter vines in 60-75 days.

Did you harvest any of the seeds from these? Heirlooms, correct?

Was the yield good? Did they need much support? The plants you showed looked pretty sturdy.

Yield was good for this type of tomato. The old beefsteak types often don’t yield well. This was well above average but certainly less than a modern hybrid slicer or paste type. Plants were huge but were fairly sturdy. Definitely sturdier than some similar types. Overall a very good tomato well worth growing.
