I lived in Bulgaria for nine months and it was an unforgettable experience. Bulgarians are my favourite European people. They are very nice, have a good heart, they're kind, helpful, natural, honest, reliable, unpretensious, they love to sing and to gather and mingle with homemade food, like pickles, honey, cheese, jam, bread and wine; they love to cook. It is very easy to join and get along with them, they're very open to new people. Just like their Land, a rough treasure with so much yet to be discovered. I lived in Gabrovo (3 weeks only) and in Sofia; I visited Veliko Tarnovo, the Rila Monastery, Shipka Mountain, Melnik, Blagoevgrad, Belogradchik, Plovdiv, Vidin, Vitosha Mountain, Kasanlek, Bozhentsi, Vratsa, Tryavna.... I also watched ballet and opera shows from the Sofia Opera and Ballet, traditional Bulgarian theatre, folklore dance and singing. The next year I went back and visited Nessebar, Sunny Beach and Varna. In Sofia I visited all museums, historical/archaeological sites, churches and walked around all the time in places like Vitosha Boulevard and Borisova Park, churches and the amazing Cathedral. I bought Icons and ate a lot of salads, like the Shopska salad. I even fell into the Bulgarian mood. Nessebar is a true wonder. *Love*

Just returned from Bulgaria. This is a fine film and narrative that gives great history of Bulgaria, its people, culture, art and what Bulgaria has gained and lost over its history. It gave me more understanding of my mother's family history and of my grandparents, whom I never knew. It is all overwhelming, awesome, inspiring and beautiful all at the same time. Thank you for this film and narrative. I am learning.

I'd steer clear from the sea resorts in spite of what k2dc75 advises (unless you don't mind a poisoning because of the too much unlicensed imported or home-made alcohol).. Many places are still under some sort of construction or upgrade works.. You can go to the Aegean in Greece for the beaches and Bulgaria for the inland treasures. Best to travel with car (if from Europe) - this way you can really go up and down the peninsula in no time.

Some history missing here. . . The Kings of Bulgaria - where are they in this? I am a direct descendant of Princess Anna Maria of Hungary who became Queen pf Bulgaria when she married King Ivan Asen II of Bulgaria - they are my 23rd great-grand-parents. Queen Anna Maria was the sister of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary. In this video I also saw icons of St Olga and St Vladimir - no mention was made of them either - they too are ancestors of mine via Anne of Kiev [Anna Yaroslavna], Queen of France

Basically in the rural regions is a bit hard to find translator. One of your options is to get one from Sofia or the other big cities, but it would be more expensive. . As advice - try to locate some NGO's from the region you would like to visit - usually the people are friendly and would help.
@briantravelman12 жыл бұрын
I agree. I could film a better one though. LOL This one was really good though, it really went deep into the culture and gave us a look at the REAL Bulgaria. I also seen a nature one which was interesting. I think Bulgaria is greatly underrated and doesn't get the attention it deserves. No one ever talks about Bulgaria, and you never see it in travel shows. Only Rick Steves did it once, what's up? I virtually knew nothing about it until I saw this. I never knew it was so interesting! :)

I agree, a beautiful documentary that I want to share with friends as I have a house there and love it, but decidedly dismissive of the Islamic people who live in Bulgaria, after all it is still their home too. Any hint of prejudice towards Turks, Pomaks (not even referred to) or gypsies is not acceptable and taints the overall quality of this production. Bulgaria is the interesting country it is because of its unique history not despite it.

Waw loved it, GG :)

Loved the film! But I have to make a small correction. Saints Cyril and Methodius (pronounced Kiril and Metodee in Bulgaria) were not Bulgarians. They were born in Thessaloniki (Solun), Greece. They mean so much to us that many people actually believe that Kiril and Metodee were Bulgarians.

You have a point, but what Bulgarian civilization code stands for is only due to Orthodoxy as it shaped the character of the place. This is the pivotal part of the country's culture and way of life, although this is changing now. I object Pomaks being put in separate group, since they belong in full to the Bulgarian ethnicity, regardless of any current political moves. They, the Bulgarian muslims present only a different religious appurtenance. We love them, but we do not pray with them.

Bulgaria is oldest country in Europe. Bulgaria is first national state in Europe which adopt Christianity and Bulgarian church became first national independent church in Europe in year 927. Bulgarians created Bulgarian Civilization with Bulgarian language, Bulgarian alphabet Cyrillic and Orthodox Christianity. Bulgarians spread Christianity and the Bible, translated into Bulgarian language and written in Cyrillic, among the so-called "Slavs" and incorporated most of the "Slavs" into Bulgarian civilization, including the Russians. All so-called "Slavic" languages are created on the basis of Bulgarian language. Russian language and so-called "Slavic" languages on the Balkans are dialects of Bulgarian language. Today about 300 million people in Eurasia including Russia use Bulgarian writing system Cyrillic as the official alphabet. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Bulgarian_Empire en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simeon_I_of_Bulgaria en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyrillic_script en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Bulgarian_Empire

Most of the children start to learn english before they go to school.Of course, if you go to a small village, its not for sure that you gonna find somebody who can speak english, especially if the village is muslim, There are a lot of them, who dont speak even bulgarian.
