Well, Destinies was originally meant as a RPG spin off to Time of Legends: Joan of Arc, with all the creatures and characters being cross compatible with the strategy game. Unfortunately, a lawsuit/legal dispute forced them to change the game to stand alone. The minis were all done by that point so I guess they just left them as is.

I have 2 rule questions. #1. Do you have to use your experience tokens before you enter a "point of interest", or can you use them during an interaction as long as it's before rolling for a test? #2. Can anyone look through market items at any time, or do they have to be at that markets location and interact with that "point of interest" to look through them?

1) You can spend your experience at any time between rolling for a test and resolving the outcome of the test. 2) The item stacks can be checked at any time by any player. Completely public information.

What I'm confused about, in terms of gameplay, is why would I ever have an experience token in my supply? Why would I not spend it immediately after getting it? I just don't see a gameplay or strategy related tactic that inspires me to collect experience tokens or not use them as soon as I get them; thus immediately returning it back to the supply. When I played with friends, we would get an experience token and would say something like, "Aaand I immediately use the experience token to improve [attribute]." Just wondering if I'm missing a rule or something.

Thanks for the guide! Looking forward to the tactile feel of a board game though with digital calculations behind the scenes. Sounds like a close friend may be moving back to our home town soon, I bought this in anticipation of sharing a fun RPG experience with him. Not to mention solo modes. I had no clue about the future 2v2 release! I am a bit worried that scanning cards will add a lot to the play time, though, I looking past it since it will be unique. Super excited about; how the skill tracks work, how dice can be boosted with a chance for auto success, and how trade markers allow the board state to change through player actions. I also think that “move and then interact” was a smart restriction design decision on their part, as there will be a lot going on with scanning and working towards the destiny(s). Thanks for the video, as always you really speed up the learning process and make purchase decisions clear.

When using an item that adds a success to a skill test or lets you use a skill in place of another, such as the silver spear, when can I use that item? Does it have to be before rolling the dice or can I roll the dice and then decide if I want to use the items to add successes? Additionally, can I use experience tokens in the middle of a test after rolling the dice to get more successes or do I have to use them before attempting the roll?

I don't own a tablet, but I have a macbook and naturally a cell phone, wich version of the app would you prefer to play considering you have to scan items. I don't know if it'd be fiddly to do with a laptop !

I know you said each character has two different destinies, and completing either one will win the game. But, are the destinies always the same two? That is, after you play as a character, you will always know what the destinies are? How does that affect the replayability with other people knowing or not knowing the destiny of the characters? You said you are supposed to keep it secret from the others.

Yes, a character's destinies are always the same. When you replay with others, the rules suggest you play with others who have also played that scenario already, so that no one has an advantage.

Still not ok about playing with an app + the path to victory seems kinda vague/opaque - like players randomly search around and whoever happens to stumble upon a trigger wins? On a flip side I love some of the mechanics, the stats and skill checks are amazing

You mention reading aloud often, but the app is muted. I know it's for the purpose of shooting a coherent video, but to what extent is there a voiceover of the text in the app? If you keep sound on, which parts will you still have to read aloud?

YO! I love games that r both apps and board! It’s y Mansions of Madness is my fav! I’m a little upset it’s almost a legacy style like Time Stories but I’m glad there’s more ways to play. Also I love the editing of this vid! It was super helpful and looks great!

The scenarios really do stand on their own, but they just tell you an overarching story, as you play through them. Nothing you have to worry about tacking or managing between games.

Why don't more (or all) games have box inserts like that? The only one I own is Mysterium. All the others are a box full of ziploc bags because third-party inserts are a little out of my price range.

How about Destinies in that regard? Will the same scenario play differently in the future?

The scenarios play out the same way, but games will play our differently by players taking different actions, exploring sections they might not have the first time through, etc.

Just like the same publisher's Chronicles of Crime, this game is app dependent. Can't play either without the app. However, as Rodney pointed out in this video, you only need the internet to download it or update it. It is played offline.

I don't mind app integrations, but I really don't see how this isn't better as a video game. Especially after watching Monique and Naveen's play through, it seems like everything you want to do has to go through the app, so handling the physical components just feel like bookkeeping and chore... not really a fun thing to do. Am I missing something?

I don't think you're missing anything - what is fun for one person might not be what's fun for someone else. The important thing is that you can make an informed decision about whether or not the game suits your particular tastes, and if these videos helped, than that's good to hear :)

Difficult for me to address without knowing the exact context. You can do things to slow down another players progress, but as I understand it, you can't ultimately block their ability to also complete both of their quests (they might just have to find another way, or pivot to their other quest).

@@WatchItPlayed True to that. You can block one path a player may be taking from the two available. Which is the case I've heard, and a case which makes the game less appealing for those that encountered it. The critique was that they were blocked which ultimately lead to them being so far behind they could never catch up, thus they just sat in the game without drive to attempt to win (as they clearly couldn't). As it stands, I cannot make comments based on my own play experience as I've not got the game, nor played it. It looked interesting, and since you tend to make really nice videos regarding how to play games I whimsically thought to watch. The game does have some interesting ideas within, I'll give it that.

The games that require app to play always fail in my eyes. I have burned myself once. What happens is that after some time (typically 1-2 years) the developers STOP supporting the app, meaning once you get an OS update to your device then the game app will not be compatible and you will not be able to use it. This in turn makes the game unplayable. My Golem Arcana copy is just sitting on a shelf now as pretty miniatures.

At first as he was explaining things, I was certain everything could have been done with a standard (giant) book with a lookup table for each action. But given the game then also tracks hidden attributes (for example, guilt as shown), I'm not sure. They'd have to give you a stat page where you track all that, then another lookup table for each possible thing. However, it doesn't seem impossible. Kind of like "Tales of the Arabian Nights". However, those "scenarios" are static....i.e. picked at random, pretty much independent of everything else in the world. These interactions seem connected, and the app can track that for you instead of "if you already got the horse, read page 34, but only if your guilt is less than 1. Else read page 35, but only if you have the sword" type of thing lol. The "good" news is, Rodney did mention Steam as a place to download the app. PC apps usually will work forever, and if they don't, there is (hopefully) someone that has modded the game to make it work. And in the end, they can make the app open-source and let the community maintain it. Only hard part is using a dang PC to try and scan QR codes lol where a tablet is much easier to pass around.

Some people certainly don't want apps in there games, and there's nothing wrong with that, but I find the concerns expressed over apps being unsupported, is talked about much more than I've actually seen happen. Golem Arcana is certainly an example of a game where the app rendered it obsolete, but do you have other examples? Particularly of it happening within 1-2 years, which you suggest is when they often go obsolete? Either way, thanks for checking out the video.

Lucky duck has stated in the past that if they ever stop supporting a game with an app, they will make the app open source so anyone can update it. It is unlikely that it will happen any time soon though. Chronicles of Time came out in 2018, followed by millennium edition (1400, 1900, 2400) in 2020-2021 using the same app. So it will likely in two more years there will be another CoC expansion, as well as Destinies expansion. As long as gamers keep buying them, they will make more.

But Golem Arcana wasn’t just app driven. It was using a stylus and so it is harder to simulate using other means like the QR codes will be. Besides, if you look at the popularity of other app driven games, I am not worried in the slightest. It’s a chance I am willing to take to try something innovative that a traditional board game can’t do.
