1:14:21 How would this assertion deal with something like, growing up on a farm? For example a large family subsistence farming to survive. Children are included in labor that doesn’t produce “just a bunch of money” for anyone, rather their labor aids in the sustenance of the family and is understood as a virtuous undertaking where one learns discipline and responsibility while contributing directly to the health and well being of the family. This can easily be (and often is/was) situated within a concept of eudaimonja that is contextualized within a particular ethical framework and participation in community. By all accounts this could easily be seen as the type of “child labor” in question that exists within an industrialized society that we are presupposing is just self evidently morally repugnant from the jump. In the farming example there plenty of things one would get from child labor that for their part wouldn’t be said to be just instrumentally valuable. They may be instrumentally valuable but why would you just assume that someone participating in community and harvesting/tilling the farm with their father wouldn’t be getting a host of other things from it? Couldn’t get a “deep sense of fulfillment and joy” from something like this? Ask my dad how he felt when he was dragged away from my pawpaw and the draft horses when he had to start going to school. To this day he maintains that he dreaded it. A lot of assumptions being smuggled in here as a given as well. “Good in itself”? How’d you determine what that even is?

It never occurred to me that someone may consider me responsible for the death of the person on the side track, because I assigned responsibility for putting them into harm's way to whomever tied everyone to the tracks. Therein lies the difference between that scenario and pushing the fat guy off the bridge. 🤷♂

Same. I also thought that it was generally accepted that you're supposed to do that. Like for example if you're flying a plane and it malfunctions you aim to crash land in the area with the least people. Kinda shocked that it could be viewed as sociopathic

1:06:40 I don't understand that point here. Wouldn't you on both grounds end up with with severely impaired/traumatized subjects /individuals that (likely, not universally) could not function within society to a certain degree and or be unable to make ethical decisions due to, for example, stress or trauma or a lack of education associated with having your formative years destroyed?

I was very confused over the side topic on supposed failures of utilitarianism based on ambiguity over the meaning of "utility" and how utilitarianism still requires a first order virtue. This isn't a failure or flaw. Utilitarians already know this, it comes up anytime one is asked what "good" means, it requires a fallback to a first order. What was also funny about this topic is... that is true if every ethical system, none of them are "first order." Even if their proponents claim it.
