The incredible thing is; he's still practically just a baby. If as he matures he gets to the point where he recognizes it's work and starts readily handing over his kills, you my friend may rewrite the book on the intelligence and reasoning ability of reptiles. I know he has a long way to go, but the fact that he made a split second decision to do what's fun (chasing another mouse) over what's in his best interest (swallowing a meal that was a sure thing) is already proof that there's a lot more going on upstairs than just instinctively doing what it takes to survive.

@@RoulicisThe The birds housed in the enclosure in the video were plenty small and available enough to be easy targets for Raptor. He just happened to be focused on the task at hand, which was what he knew and was trained to do. At his size he could easily take on things like sparrows, doves, finches, parakeets- even cockatiels. The issue of catching them is a relatively small problem in such a confined space.

I imagine that Raptor is quite happy with his job. He gets paid in mice, and gets to snack on the job. It’s a win-win. Also the fact that Raptor is EXTREMELY mobile, being able to chase mice up walls and all of that, makes him one of the BEST Rodent hunters I’ve ever seen.

Many years ago, I was a young man living in a crappy apartment. The roaches were so bad, I tried everything, bombs, traps, etc. Someone suggested getting a Tokay Gecko. I bought one and let it loose in my apartment. Within a week, I had a fat Gecko and no roaches.

in southeastern Asia (in better places) they still like to have them around for the same reason. nature has the best solution, technology is just a different thing. works in the opposite direction for a different purpose and should know it's place to remain useful.

Tokays are popular for all round bug control as most lizards only do ground to mid ground or outer walls. If you have a few they will make mating noises at night though but other than that they are fun to watch.

@@naomisimpson1142 Covid allegedly came from some doofus who decided to eat a bat that happened to be carrying the strain of virus. Bats are not bad creatures by any means, and in fact are themselves responsible for a huge portion of insect control. And as for the bubonic plague, it was allegedly caused by parasites that probably were carried by rats and mice, but not by the rodents themselves. That said, rats and mice can certainly be destructive and overwhelming pests to any home, farm, feedhouse, etc. They reproduce exponentially and drastically increase the risk of disease through their waste, dander, and sheddings. Not to mention they eat from and ruin food supplies and destroy walls, flooring, and other structures. Put simply, rodents are a great threat if left unchecked in a domestic setting.

Well, the fact that most/all of it's survival needs are being met is a big factor in regards to the video. So, with repetition and more experience, it is possible that it will recognize this as a form of exercise and a chance to actively hone it's prey drive

Totally cool! It's great to actually find content that's so real and exciting. I was already enamored with the minks--now we have a new champion. I thought I had a fairly diverse knowledge of wildlife, but I have no idea what kind of lizard this amazing reptile might be, so I'm off to do some research and find out....looks a bit like a small monitor? Oh, it's called a Raptor, "Doh!". Well, my brain is getting old. As with most all critters I see, I'd like to investigate the feesability of me raising one myself. I once worked closely with a friend in Florida who raised Iguanas. If I lived back in prehistoric times, I'd probably be the guy trying to raise and tame Apatosaurus'. Probably the main reasons not to eat them is that you don't know what they've been eating, and he may lose his drive to hunt if he gets full.

THE PET HOUSE It seems like the normal procedure is to freeze prey for a while to kill parasites and bacteria, then use the meat for feeding later. You also want to be careful because rat poison often takes days to kill rodents. But if he was called to a job then they probably don’t use poison at that location, and since this is Raptor’s first real hunt you don’t want to discourage the animal by interfering TOO much. Joseph has said in other videos that getting the animal to cache their prey is usually the hardest part of the training.

Mink Reflexes??? Better--on an order of magnitude! Unless I'm mistaken, they're far faster in the open field than a mink, and can climb. In a ratting melee situation with dogs, raptor with his quickness coupled with his climbing ability will be superior to a terrier much of the time, I predict, like with stumps, trees, and woodpiles. He'll be able to wait with the dogs for someone else to flush them, or he'll be able to flush them from inside the holes himself--as such, Rapto's gonna be VERY versatile in a hot clime; probably not so much in a cooler one, but a heated carrier case could help.

This is incredible. I never thought a reptile would surplus kill. Did you train this somehow? What's your hypothesis on why he does this? Is it natural for predators that hunt nesting creatures to surplus kill? Or do you think it's a side effect of his relationship with you/food?

I think what we just watched is a good indication of what all of our ancestors had to deal with 65+ million years ago. This would explain why mammals remained small, quick, and stayed out of sight, while the Dinos did as they pleased with their planet.

There are actually a lot more deer now that we cleared forests, killed their natural predators and built gardens. This leads to disease for the overpopulated deer.

@Luke yeet If left unchecked they overpopulate and kill off all the natural food sources and then kill themselves off along with other animals. This isnt really something that happens since deer populations are monitored and hunted to prevent this though.
