I was hoping for a more nuanced resolution to the Blake issue. No such luck. Thor et al was faced with a very powerful threat in Blake, a very emotionally complex character. Blake shows a more intuitive grasp of the more subtle and wider uses of Thor's powers than Thor himself does .... which is rather troubling. Had he not collapsed into emotional self pity, Blake most likely would have defeated everyone there with the possible exception of Odin himself, even Thor, despite being in control of the vastly powerful Destroyer armor. A very lucky win for Thor indeed. Speaking of Thor, he handled this in the way most writers show as his first and generally fall back manner; hyper aggression and brute force. He is the poster child for the idea that power does not equate to wisdom. Now as far as Thor and Blake being brothers, It was also my impression that Blake, though crated by Odin, is an aspect of Thor's personality. As such they cannot be "brothers." That would be like saying Banner and the Hulk are "brothers", which is also not true for similar reasons. Thor and Blake are two aspects of the same person. Blake is just an artificially created persona who now has his own body.

There was actually a story were they got separated and bruce made similar comparisons, only for hulk to humorously mock the claim moments later. I still remember the comic where the Fantastic 4 is mourning cause the Human Torch just died. The Thing is completely silent and doesn't know how to cope, so Bruce Banner and Donald Blake turn to each other, nod, and transform into Hulk and Thor, and tell Ben Grimm to let it out. Ben Grimm just swings as hard as he can until he's too distraught and tired to fight and finally is able to cry it out, Thor and Hulk hugging him as he breaks down.

I suppose one might say that while I may not agree with Blake's methods, I can understand and sympathize with the agony and suffering he endured at the hands of the Norse gods, especially Odin. One might say that these immortals suffered for their arrogance and short-sightedness as they learned the consequences of confronting a revenge-obsessed man. They believed mortals to be insipid, inept and fragile creatures, yet one of them gave the gods a brutal reminder of how dangerous mortals can be when pushed beyond the edge of their sanity. I suppose that is the punishment that Odin and his kind wrought on themselves when he created Donald Blake: the irony is that in doing so, he created his own doom and his people suffered for his mistake.

I know I may be in the minority here, but I highly enjoy what Donny Cates has done with Thor personality wise. Thor not only has the power of a Skyfather, but he acts like one in a way he has not since the Ragnarok arc. From Cates’ first issue, where Thor commanded Galactus to kneel, he acted with all the regality and pride of a Skyfather. In fact, Thor’s interactions which Galactus in general demonstrated that his personality has substantially shifted over the several months of his reign. Which makes sense, because Thor has jumped in power level from a being Galactus could swat to a being who could rip Power Cosmic from an amped Galactus with nothing but the Thorforce. I also enjoy the new understanding Thor has found with Loki. Loki is Thor’s best friend and enforcer in some ways, but Loki cannot manipulate Thor the way he did during the _Reigning_ arc. And Thor’s dynamic with Odin makes sense. Like it or not, Thor has never had a good relationship with Odin post-Ragnarok. During Matt Fraction’s _The Mighty Thor_ run, Odin and Thor’s relationship was one of contempt, disdain, and spit. Jason Aaron’s Odin personality wise tracked 100% with Matt Fraction’s. The only difference was in their portrayal of Odin’s power level: Odin got many of his best showings under Fraction, and many of his worst under Aaron. All in all, while I feel bad for Donald Blake, I like how Thor took command of Blake’s fate. Said “I’m not going to kill you, because you’re my brother ... but I do smite my brothers when they get out of line.” That was a very Skyfather-esque thing to say. I can’t wait to see where Cates goes. I just hope that he follows through with Aaron’s reveal about Thor being the Phoenix’s son, and adds a new dynamic and relationship to Thor’s portfolio. It’s long overdue for Thor to have a meaningful relationship with a mother, and with how big a character Phoenix is, she might just be that.

Back in the classic era, he would do anything - and ally himself with anyone - if it meant Thor’s ruin. For a moment, I was actually worried that Loki would try to plot with Donald Blake against Thor. But seeing him punish Blake for what he did to Thor? It shows how much Loki now loves Thor. All in all, I loved this arc and its ending.

And don’t say the Celestial arc, because she just sent Thor on an errand to fetch power from the Skyfathers. The Skyfathers did the heavy lifting. Because the writers have done *nothing* with Gaia. She is the most irrelevant mother in comic book hero history, and she’s literally everyone’s mother on top of that. Phoenix, on the other hand, has only one child - Thor. She is central to the Marvel Universe, and will add a fresh dynamic to the Thor mythos. A dynamic that can be adapted, unlike Gaia, who has less to add to Thor than Frigga. Hence why the adaptations of Thor either make Frigga his mother (MCU) or don’t approach the subject at all (EMH, Avengers Assemble, etc.). Not to mention, Thor being the son of Earth’s first Avenger - Firehair - is much more interesting than him being the son of the vague entity “Mother Earth.” Thor’s connection with Firehair perfectly explains his affinity for humanity. And Firehair in the right hands could prove to be Thor’s most interesting parent. All in all, I strongly applaud this change from Aaron. I think it was a terrific change, and one I hope stays.

Odin gave Thor the Odinforce, Loki placed him in the prison made to hold thim (Loki) until Ragnarok, and gave Blake the title of "God of lies". I Don't know how he summoned Mjolnir, seeing as both Blake& Stick = Thor & Mjolnir trade... But seeing as he seemingly grabbed it from the Bifrost, maybe it circumvented the trade (Or he just holds more control/ knowledge and is able to do it, much like I would think Odin would be able to if he held th OF)

While I like the overall concept and the path the story took. I feel the ending to it was a bit rushed and forced. They created a huge epic, only to have basically everyone break down and sort of shuffle off. It's not bad, not at all, but I feel there was more to this and it simply wasn't expanded upon. Blake was built up to truly pushing the idea of what Asgard was meant to be, showcasing all it ugly darkness hidden behind the rainbow colors. He was literally that dirty little secret that could bring it all down so I thought he'd have more of a lasting impact.

@@dakodablack7312 Thor’s not a king, he’s a Skyfather. God-like beings have different standards and different punishments. Because they have such long lifespans, their punishments are far harsher. And as badly as I feel for Donald Blake, the fact of the matter is that Blake effectively deposed Asgard’s Skyfather and attempted to commit genocide against all the other Asgardians. No matter how much we sympathize with Blake, this is literally the highest crime you can commit against Asgard. So Thor was very merciful all things considered. *EDIT* One other thing I forgot. Back during the Classic Era, there was a time that Tyr Odinson attempted to depose Odin and Thor. When the plot was foiled, Odin intended to kill Tyr then and there. It was Thor who bargained for Tyr’s life, resulting in the God of War’s exile.

I don't know man. Cates seems to have picked up the attitude that Matt Fraction and Jason Aaron started with Odin. Thor never had this kind of animosity with him, there was always a level of respect.

@@FernandoComicsOfficial I feel that Post-Ragnarok Thor has never had a good relationship with Odin. Even JMS Skyfather Thor told Donald Blake that the reason he was so particular when bringing back Asgardians was so that he did not accidentally bring back Odin. JMS Thor still respected and loved Odin, but he loved being in complete control of his life a lot more. Then the moment Thor brought Odin back - presumably transferring the sliver of Odinforce which restored Mjolnir into Odin’s body, where it regenerated - their relationship became defined by contempt and spite for one another. Thor was enraged at all the secrets Odin kept, and Odin showed contempt for all of the mistakes Thor made as Skyfather. Matt Fraction’s Thor run had the God of Thunder all but despise the Allfather of Asgard. And considering that Fraction’s Odin would have sat and watched the Nine Realms burn from Surtur’s death explosion unless Loki projected an illusion of Frigga promising Odin sex? Yeah, I can see why Thor hated him. Jason Aaron’s writing of Odin’s character was par for the course if you ask me. Aaron’s only change was to make the Odinforce’s power fluctuate based on the host’s emotional state - a nuance I actually like. Depressed Odin fell to such lows that he was defeated by a hammerless Thor. However, this same Jason Aaron wrote an Old King Thor who obliterated the universe-obliterating Final Form Gorr. I’m pretty sure that Old King Thor outperformed all previous versions of himself with that final feat, including Phoenix Force Old King Thor, Necrosword Old King Thor, and Rune King Thor.

@@theopportuneson699 it's true that JMS Thor didn't want to immediately bring back Odin, but he offered to, and meant it. And they spoke with respect and admiration for each other. Then Matt Fraction turned it into a relationship that was toxic and bitter. Then Aaron followed it, and now Cates has followed it.

And I feel that feeling atleast for me has been consistant in the recent itteration of Thor Also considering the narrative that the story went with I really don't think Donald deserved the punishment that he got.

Odin, well god he looked old. bad decisions and choices all catching up with him. problem with old world gods, doesnt matter which universe dc or marvel olympians or asgards, they were all for the most part assholes. theres ni real good or evil and in Odins case just spent an eternity trying to avoid fate...doing what so called best for all...

I read a Cates interview where he said he was doing 7 years of stories? If so, why does he keep finishing arcs in a meagre 6 issues, 1-2 issues of filler, then another 6 arcs? His premises and build up are fantastic but his pay offs feel unearned and out of left field. I know we still have loads of Donny's work left and at the least I'm happy he pays respect to Thor's powers and character (though sometimes, Kingly or not, he's a little stern, e.g. to Doctor Strange, a friend and sorcerer supreme who helped him put Mjiolner back before 'I will not ask a second time', like come on Thor, give him the benefit of the doubt as he is restricting an Odin Force mass murderer).
