@AIO inc. I totally agree, I should've specified that the exhaust when cats are cold is usually particularly CO and HC rich because the engine coolant temp is usually also low, which leads to rich a/f ratios. You are correct though that normal engine operating temperature it will be pretty low even with a non functioning cat (assuming the rest of the fuel and air monitoring systems are performing correctly).

Good technique. I would personally use a larger flex hose, like 2", and larger Fernco coupling to prevent back pressure on your car.

Unless you have a really old truck without a catalytic converter - then it won't be that much CO it will be more CO2 carbon -dioxide (and water + heat).

A study on suicides in Australia found no reduction in the lethality of exhaust from cars with catalytic converters, as opposed to those without. That's in humans. Maybe wasps are different, but I doubt it

I'm surprised this worked. Modern cars have catalytic converters that dramatically reduce the concentration of carbon monoxide in exhaust, provided there is no exhaust leak and the devices is working. Once mandated, there was a rapid decline in the incidence of human CO poisoning across the country. You're more likely to be successful with a small engine having no catalytic converter.
@GarretBobbyFurguson

Although you are right, in the last like 20 years cars have gotten so much more efficient and better engineered that the catalytic converter is not as important as it use to be
@radon360
@radon360 Жыл бұрын
You're exactly right about the catalytic converter. There's plenty of other gasses, including carbon dioxide present that would displace enough oxygen to cause asphyxiation, or even toxicity.

Carbon monoxide is typically only created in a low oxygen environment. The exhaust from a tailpipe of a car being run outdoors would be mostly Carbon DIoxide and water.
