Destroying a Whole RAF Base. Demolishing RAF Upwood

Lived there in 1969.. Being sang to sleep by Lightnings.. After there dad was posted to RAF Gütersloh. I'm just glad my now late dad can't see this.. It's making my eyes fill. 😢

How depressing. Went there for 4 weeks for NCO Leadership School in 1988. Just so sad the RAF or the MOD couldn't find anything to do with this site. I was stationed at RAF Alconbury at that time, after a stint at RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge. I know things must and do change, but I had hoped for a better ending for Upwood! RIP and thanks

Some of the schools were used as a primary school for US military dependents in the 90s so the building you saw 10 minutes in was upgraded for the school. I attended in 1995, the last year the school was open.

30:17 , it is an old Airman's Barrack block but was converted to a school/ nursery by the USAAF , some of the other blocks where converted into Hospital wards as RAF Upwood was a Hospital right up to the day it closed . There was a new Hospital built , which was the first building to be demolished and that was behind these blocks which is all now new housing .

Thank you Andy and Dave for yet another fascinating explore, looks like you just got there in the nick of time before the lot is razed. Your video prompted me to research the base - absolutely fascinating. It was home to what seems a fantastic medical facility, the 423 medical squadron based here, who looked after the US personnel in the hospital and dental building, an amazing place apparently, alas it demolished in 2015 - now that would have been something to have filmed. I didn’t realise Lancaster’s were stationed at Upwood in the war (many built not far from me at AVRO Yeadon of course ) By the way, I presume the artists take the empty aerosols back with them ? I didn’t see any empties ! Keep ‘em coming lads - marvellous.

Hello Richard. RAF Upwood was certainly a busy place in the Second World War, it was home to two different squadrons of Mosquitos at differing times between 1943-1945 amogst others. I would have liked to have filmed the medical buildings but as you write they were gone in 2015. Thank You very much indeed for watching and commenting.

the guardroom is normally just inside the main gates , upwood was 1 base I never visited during my sevice

I grew up there making dens where where the cute girls when I was there just class a drugs n wet socks by morning lol had propped rooms as dens cushty u might say lol . The clinic was creepiest . Good work guys

@@ALWResearchTeam Hi, thought I'd give you an update and anyone else who's interested in exploring here. It took three attempts to finally get onto the site. A friend and I drove out at night, directed by google maps. We ended up in a field on what seemed to be a landfill site covered with flood lights and backed onto what seemed to be a new residential area. After a long while we gave up. On going back to the car, we looked up maps again, and multiple locations were pinned including the waste site, which was strange. Another explorer kindly gave us the exact coordinates and we went around 11pm the following weekend, turns out the residential area we first spotted is a new area that have been built on some of the base. We found the gate and walked through, it's quite funny how open it all is. It was incredibly dark, we had a torch but kept it off, to not draw attention. We followed the path and could see the silhouettes of the buildings a little way off. There was a glowing light on the side of the wall, and realised there was a fire going, we could hear talking and screaming, so put it down to teenagers messing around and left, as it didn't seem safe and was very isolated. On leaving the gates, we could hear a car driving up behind us, we rushed to get out and back onto the country path to the right, and we watched another car pull up outside the gate for a few minutes before they both drove off in opposite directions. I think it's easy to guess what they were up to perhaps. Anyways, we thought it would be a good idea to come back in the day. We came back the following week at 9am, and we explored the building to the right (assuming some sort of reception) which was amazing, there was a dog bed in there and black bags of rubbish, We assumed the homeless, it seemed empty and very quiet though. We spent 20 minutes in there before we heard someone making a shushing noise in a back room. We left immediately. When you get into the site there are still around 15 buildings, we went in a few but heard snoring in one and what sounded like someone shaking out/ flapping a sheet in another. We didn't get to explore a lot, out of worry about who might be around. We also saw a man pacing behind one of the buildings. I have hunches that there may be somewhat of a homeless community there on the site. We didn't feel safe there, felt like we were being watched as it's so open but also didn't want to disturb anyone who might be using it as a means to live. We also followed the dirt path that went straight from the main gate, this led up to what seemed like an abandoned factory and to the right garages/ units. It was riddled with security cameras though, we didn't get too close. Did you find this? Do you know what it is exactly? If anyone is interested in exploring here, it is an amazing site, it's huge, interesting building structures, and some amazing graffiti and great for photography. It is very isolated though and seemingly occupied. So stay safe.

I was going up there 15 yr or more . Loved the place guys . Also had some paranormal stuff happen n got chased by armed police for some reason . I weed in many rooms lol . Check out film called devil's chair. If u want more stories about when it was intact hit me up. It being plowed down very sad it had trouble from day one. I went there in push chair age 3 n kept going bk lol 😎😎
