They breathe through their exoskeleton. Theres a layer of wax/oil on the exoskeleton that makes it hydrophobic and gives them more time to get out of water. What the dish soap does it strips the oil layer completely off the body, making them drown instantly.

I'm assuming that one of the ways yellowjackets let the hive know they are under attack is by releasing a pheromone when under attack or distressed but since they are getting vacuumed they seem to be calmly walking out with dirt since it is a literal vacuum sucking up all the pheromone in the air so they cant alert each other until you just dug it up. just assuming this since I heard bees also use a pheromone when in distress.
@scorpman3003 жыл бұрын
i have done this on a much bigger nest. you dont have to stand there if you have a stronger vac. you just place the hose end at the hole and turn it on. but yes they do pour out when the alarm is sounded. between the vibration of the vac, noise, and the pheromone they come running. this nest was really not that big, it might have been at one time but under 500 wasps is nothing

I used a regular vacuum cleaner, left the nozzle just next to the nest entrance and left it for two hours. The hornets didn’t suspect a thing and eventually they were all gone. And somehow they all died inside the vaccum cleaner bag without soapy water or anything. Suffocation, dizzyness, pride? Don’t know what killed them. There was a large nest inside our bedroom wall, in fact, the nest was situated just the other side of the paneling from the head of our bed. I tried all summer to lure the yellowjackets into lures placed about but caught very few. Being the nest was so close to the interior of the house, I knew it would survive winter quite well. Late in the summer, I set up with the shop vac and sucked up yellowjackets for over an hour. I also placed duct tape over the siding and foundation so all yellowjackets had only one path in or out. I filled the path with diatomaceous earth. No yellowjackets the following season.

Do you know how one could do the same with grasshoppers
@geoffmooregm2 жыл бұрын
I did the same thing to a wasp nest on my house. I waited until dusk, used a long extension and put the vacuum over the hole on the bottom of the nest. Waited a minute and started pushing on the nest breaking it up and sucking it up in chunks. When it was all gone I shut off the vacuum and put a bag over the hose with an elastic and left them in the sun the next day and then dumped the bin out. Worked great!

a better way to do this method is to pound on the ground while you haven't dug anything up yet, it'll make them angry and they will pour out much faster
@pvic69593 жыл бұрын
and leave the hose right at the hole?
@-danR3 жыл бұрын
Yes, he's doing this the hard way. I've done this with a vacuum (That's def. a wimpy shop-vac he's got there, I must say btw.). just lay the nozzle by the entrance, weight it down, stand back and bang around the entrance with a beefy stick. I didn't have to wear anything special, they don't seem to grasp the idea of the guy who's 8 feet away at the other end of the enemy attacking their doorway.

@pvic Exactly.

Whatever method you are using, it's a lot easier to eliminate yellow jackets and other wasp and hornet nests at night. Plus all of the foragers are back in the nest after dark so you get them all with no stragglers.

why didn't you give the nest to skunks? wildlife feast night-view opp missed.

I found a nest in my backyard. I waited until dark, brought a bright LED light out and set it up to shine directly into the hole. There were two guards. I opened up a bug bomb I had, started it spraying, and promptly jammed it into the hole, sealing it. I watched the ground begin to emit "fog" and laughed. The next day I went out and removed the bomb. Dug the nest up carefully, all layers. The only thing twitching was the queen. Huge. She got squished. None of these evil things since then.

I sent dragon's breath from my 12 gauge at them. It's just more satisfying that way. Also buckshot is great to prove to snakes you're still the apex predator.

I had a yellow jacket nest inside the wall of my house. I put a shop vac at the entrance and left it on for a whole day. Afterwards I spray foamed the hole shut. I had hundreds and hundreds of yellowjackets in the vacuum. It worked great and no poison in my wall.

I went from watching yappy Beeman to a random video about getting rid of yellow jackets which happened to be one of yours. From there I saw a mousetrap video. Yellow jackets brought me here, and the mouse traps made me subscribe. Now I see everything. Keep up the great work.

I've expected you would leave hose on entry for a couple of hours while drinking 🍺 beer and then get back to dig out what would remain. By the way there is a skeeters vac product that claims that it sucks out mosquitoes 🦟 for good, could you test it?

Some shop vacs don't tolerate continuous duty: the motor overheats leading to irreparable damage.
@ryankunst6683 жыл бұрын
I would have at least given the ground a good thump to piss them off and bring them out before I started digging.

I have vacuumed wasp nests before. It's the most entertaining form of wasp eradication! But at no point did I stick my hand in to fondle and pull out a handfull of dead wasps...

Fascinating. I subscribed for the mice. This is bonus information. Although I don't have a beekeeper suit and I can't even stand being bitten by mosquitoes. So I think I'll stick to mice. 😊
