The Nazis murdered people in the village of Chełmno nad Ner at a nineteenth century manor house from December 1941 - April 1943. In the summer of 1944 the victims were murdered in the forest some four kilometres distant. But in both cases, the method of murder was the same - gas vans.
The bodies were burnt but the flames did not destroy the bones. They were crushed in a device for which the original invoice still exists. Once the bones were ground up they were taken to a bridge over the river Warta and thrown into the water.
The area around the crematoria is however still littered with bone fragments which were not collected in sacks by the prisoners.
This film shows the area around a crematorium and the amount of bone fragments are very clearly visible.
Please also see my website and blogs which contain information about where this was filmed and some of the background:

You make a valuable contribution to Holocaust education. My cousin once removed Alexander Ehrenhaft , 20, was sent to Chelmo from the Łódź ghetto. He was never heard of again.

I don't know how you can bear to go to these places, Alan. Thank you for going there. I'd be losing it if I let my imagination go on its merry way. I can easily visualize how things were, especially the stench of decay and the smell of cadavers being burned. I would get sick pretty fast. Thank you also for putting the bones back into the ground. It's a gesture of kindness.

@shadowkitty56 I do not know of any complete skeletons being found in Chełmno other than of the last people who were murdered there in January 1945.

Interesting, thanks. My Grandfather was an Arbeitskommando (slave labour) imprisoned in Stalag XXB, nearby.

Hi Alan, Have you had the opportunity yet to do a film on the Kolo trainstation- the item that is still missing in your great Chelmno deathcamp video series? best regards, JB, Netherlands

No he died in 1979. Stalag XXB was in Torun. My dad was saying recently his father did some work at a "concentration camp". My grandfather thought it was Auschwitz, but I see that's too far. Could have been Chelmno or some other closer work camp. But we are talking 2rd hand news here...lol.

Alan, I have to ask: I know they have done some archaeological work at Chelmno. Do you know if they have found any more complete skeletons or bodies? I ask this because it might give an idea of the demographics of the camp (DNA studies could tell us if the victim was a Jew,a Gypsy, etc. and the age and sex.)

Chelmno is definately closer than Malbork. Well, who knows. I don't think POWs differentiated between extermination and work camps in those days, they just did as ordered. My guess though, if he did work at Chelmno, he'd have been shot due the secrecy of the work.

I meant XXA in Torun (found my notes). The huge one with the forts. LOL Oops. Torun is 120km from 'THE' Chelmno camp/forest. Yes i know there are two or more Chelmnos in Poland.

XXA had camps all over. The main one was on the south bank of the city of Torun, near Fort XIII. My grandfather, as per his account was kept in these forts.

So do I understand correctly that those areas are in effect mass graves? And the bodies are still there? Is there a marker there to honor those fallen?
