Teachers are so important with Bio specifically I think. At GCSE I was awful at it, then I re sat at a different school and even went on to do it for AS. it’s mad how teachers can affect your subjects so much.

IKR? I'd left KS2 primary school with a level 6 [National Curriculum, not GCSE. It's equivalent to a grade 3] in both english and maths. The teacher in english [years 7-9] was CRAP I'm telling you! He just likened my struggle with coming up with ideas to write with being 'bad' at english, and he'd always send me to my head of year's office for things like smiling or getting slightly restless. From years 7-9 I was stuck at a grade 2-3. But after getting my teacher changed in late/mid year 9, I was instantly surrounded by enthusiastic kids as well as a fun and helpful new teacher. After my first unit test in that class, I got a grade 6. And in year 10, in another unit test, got an 8. Teachers affect your EVERYTHING when it comes to school but I hate how the system would still blame it all on you even if your teacher never lets you stay in class.

Doing (OCR A) A-level Biology at year 12 atm, and I approve. I've skimmed through the spec and there's a distinct difference between GCSE and A-level Bio. GCSE Bio is a joke compared to that of A-level's. Learning it is quite easy (to me at least), but as Jade said the sheer size of it is the problem. Too much content needs to be covered and memorization plays a key role. Overall, it's very interesting but challenging. Welp, thanks for scaring us Jade!

I'm in year 13 currently just finishing biology, chemistry, and geography spec. I 100% agree with all of this it's so difficult to apply and analyse and explain things and for very few marks. A grade C is currently about 48% and a grade B is around 55% and its hard to even get to this level. Half my chem class failed their June mocks and most of my geog class don't get 3/4 marks on essays cause A levels are so hard. My bio teacher said in my first lesson in year 13, it's called advanced level for a reason. Everything is relevant. The bio text book is 500 pages in tiny print. It's killing everyone. Only take it if you need it as a particular subject for your uni course. Don't take it as a side quest.

In year 13 rn and I totally agree with you! this advice is so great (apart from making notes after EVERY lesson which isn’t realistic for me aha) it’s okay if you don’t get it straight away though, as long as you’re motivated enough to go to the teacher after class or learn through Khan academy or whatever

The key to doing well in A level biology is not taking anything for granted. Make sure you start even before you start preparing even before you enter sixth form school. That way, when you start officially, you are able to work at your pace because things get crazy very first. Also, ensure you have a target of finishing the syllabus at least two months before the actual exam. Practise as many questions as possible and study the techniques used in answering questions. Good luck to all you newbies.

Great advice and video! I did Biology with English Lit, History and French and have to agree that it would be easier with maths and chemistry. I still got an A*, so it's definitely possible to do well without having maths and chemistry, but I think you have to be willing to put in a little more effort to understand some of the maths stuff - like the t-tests and chi squared. Also I feel like one of the best pieces of advice I was ever given on answering biology exam papers was to not be afraid to state the obvious. So often on the questions using graphs and tables, you can lose marks by not pointing out what seems too glaringly obvious and easy to merit a mention.

Warwick Wagner 4 is honestly stressful, (I started with Maths, Further Maths, Economics and History) and although the workload is manageable. It led me to have to be working 24/7 which is not what I want. So therefore I dropped one (history). I’ve also heard that further maths isn’t really needed for medicine/science related courses, but obviously if you want to go into maths then it is essential

@lururu6 жыл бұрын
Warwick Wagner you're right about further maths not being a requirement; it just often means that the grade requirements are slightly lower for maths courses. for example, for my uni (uni of leeds) the normal requirements are AAA, but they are AAB/A*BB if you have a further maths A level or an A in further maths AS level. i haven't researched these unis but some of the really high unis like oxbridge might require it, but if you're not aiming as high as that, you should be fine not doing further maths. everything covered in further maths is gone through at university where necessary to put everyone on the same level, and same with statistics and mechanics because not everyone has done those either

I completely agree with producing resources after each lesson at GCSE, but at A-Level using as many textbooks as possible and compiling all of the information together is so important due to the super picky mark schemes. You can’t really use textbooks though until you’ve finished an entire topic so (as stressful as it is) I 100% believe it better to leave all resources until after you’ve finished the full chapter. Otherwise you can end up with resources that aren’t explained in the way the mark scheme likes and subsequently drop marks. 💗💗

I am in 12th grade and have been preparing for medical entrance exam for the past 2 years. And I looooovvee biology. genetics and biotechnology is really interesting and always blows my mind everytime I study it. Also a tip my botany teacher gave us that if you have a topic which has a lot of examples write them down on a chart paper and past it on your wall or above your table where you glance often. Even if you don't actively read it, just glancing is enough to help you remember it

Easily, in my opinion, by a million miles, the best piece of advice in this video, and possibly ever: Try to understand it on your own before going to the lesson. and I mean really give it a good whack. Do your very best, don't just say to yourself, "Oh, ok, I'll wait until she tells us about this chunk." You need to narrow it down to a few crucial points, and to consider how you would understand it in the light of the knowledge, exactly why you need to understand this point. I am about 5,000,000 years old, and a couple of years ago learned how to create very large scale integrated circuits. I made extensive use of this method. To those who think I am a creep, I would point out that my own son and daughter are contemporaries of Jade, and I do take an interest in what they are experiencing. For a variety of reasons it is impractical to interrogate them for the sort of detail provided here, and they are not in a position to assess their own abilities in the context of the quality of teaching, which is, and always has been, subject to every degree of variation from the downright incompetent to the telepathic genius. Again, good preparation enables the discovery of the former type, they themselves are likely to be unprepared for the type of question arising from such preparation, and will tend to attempt to belittle and discredit those who are too searching of their own knowledge of the subject. If your question is simply spontaneous, you might be left with a feeling of self-doubt when this happens, if, instead, the question is a result of concentrated study of the subject, you be pretty certain that the problem is not your own, and can at least raise a flag, in the hope the situation can somehow be resolved. You may, although it pains me to say this, be able to resort, for instance, to some external infill tuition, although the apples at the bottom of this sack tend also to be unfit for human consumption. I once had a very honest teacher who told us all, "Of course, you do realise some of you are going to be better than us." This is entirely true, few teachers of any subject are likely to be anything approaching the top of their field. Their abilities lie in an intersecting, but somewhat different space from that occupied by the best practitioners of their subject. This is something seldom acknowledged. Their criticisms need to be treated similarly to those of a football fan, whose knowledge of the game may be extensive, but whose ability to play might not, for instance, take into account that the best players might be able to move five metres in half a second, toward the right place, and would be overwhelmed by the pace of a professional game played at the highest level.

Thank you. I’ve just enrolled onto a level biology for year 13 as I switched travel for it since travel was getting me nowhere. I am going to stay for 3 years at my college. My other subjects are statistics and forensic science.

Started my a levels this month and I changed sociology to biology after the first week. So far it isn’t horrid but I really hope I don’t regret it 😬

Sadie what was your experience with sociology? xx
@sadie57306 жыл бұрын
Annabel Rogers personally I thought the subject entailed was quite boring and not necessarily something I would enjoy. I do psychology and there is some overlaps so I chose sociology to drop out of the 2 xx

Sadie thank you for replying x what kind of things did you do in sociology, I want to do physcology but I’m unsure about sociology

Annabel Rogers I only stayed in the lesson for a week so I can’t really comment on it, maybe speak to so,done at your school or wherever you’re considering studying the subject

I’m doing both sociology and biology and I understand what you mean, sociology doesn’t have particularly exciting content. But I find it interesting and it goes nicely with my other subjects and I have an amazing teacher who makes it as fun as possible!

Just started my second year of A-level Biology, it wasn't a subject I originally wanted to do but ended up doing it because I needed a third A-level, but I remember absolutely hating it, getting mostly Us and finding it so hard up until January/February when I worked out what worked for me and now I'm averaging Bs and I'm really happy with how I'm doing, so it is possible! Edit: I have something to add on something I slightly disagree with Jade on. I don't do other sciences or "academic" subjects (I take Biology, Politics and Textiles btw) and I don't think that just because you don't plan to go into the science or medical fields or do other science subjects, that you shouldn't do biology. If you have an interest in the subject and/or it's content then go for it. Know that It's hard, but as jade said it is very interesting and very rewarding when you get the grades you worked hard for. I ended up choosing Biology after finding out the spec and realising that I found a lot of the content really interesting.

I am not from the uk, but I had biology in a similar way compared to A levels, at least I think so. I'm from Germany and I did as a “Leistungskurs“. And I started studying it last year (finished second semester last week) aaaaaand I really like it still. After school I thought we had learned so much during the 2 1/2 years, but honestly just one semester is more... plus I had to take physics (two semesters), chemistry and math which makes the first year really hard. Looking forward to brighter times ahead (and more interesting lectures) was nice to see how different A levels is compared, even though there is also a great difference between school and uni here.

I'm from the US and therefore don't understand A level or GCSE stuff, but this sounds similar to my experience in AP biology. Not sure if that translates to the same course or not, but what you were saying about consolidating and making cards after every lesson definitely applied to AP bio as well.

I found that memorising the mark scheme was super important during my exams a few months ago for OCR. The answers are literally the same every time - the only hard part is trying to find out what topic the question is referring to. Like when I saw a question I was like "thats probably enzymes" then I just wrote a standard answer for enzymes using the keywords that I had memorised from the mark scheme.

Hard agree with the difficulty of a level biology maths questions!! As someone who did pretty average in gcse maths, the amount of maths and the complexity of it in a level bio was very shocking to me. It’s just something that you really need to put the work into in your own time, because for the most part your teachers just won’t have to time to dedicate in lessons to maths questions due to the sheer level of content that has to be covered. In my experience, the maths aspect of each topic was largely left to us to work through independently with maybe half an hour in the last lesson of the topic being spent on explaining those questions. Maths is a significant chunk of the a level so do make sure you’re solid on this as well as the content!!

You know what's annoying? In Germany we don't get to choose our A level subjects. (at least not in my type of school.) I currently involuntary have to suffer from Biology and Chemistry lessons, that I never wanted to in the first place. Ugh. Well whatever, I know I'm going to need my Biological and Chemistrical knowledge for studying Psychology at University but not all the topics we discussed. And as much as I love learning new things, I think it is such a waste of time for me to sit in these subjects when I could have another Psychology lesson instead. Anyways, I thank you for this video and the tips you give and just want to tell you that you are such an inspiration and I love you. Greetings from Germany, Michelle. PS: I hope you're having fun travelling Europe!

I’ve started A Level Biology (OCR A) now and I’m in year 12. We haven’t finished one subunit yet and I’ve made flashcards on what we have done so far and it’s almost 2 topics worth at GCSE 😐😂. I didn’t quite comprehend how much content there was but I do like the content which is good xxx

Loved this video, wish I had seen it before taking biology! Having such a dilema at the moment, im in year 13 at the moment and really struggling with biology! so much content and markschemes are vile! I work so hard for it but aren't really getting the grades I want (normally Ds and Cs). I know the grades really aren't awful or anything but im also just not happy cause I just feel constantly confused, and am only scraping passes in tests beacuse I spend all my time revising and learning the content (i struggle with the application of knowledge)! This week I have been heavily considering restarting year 12 with different subjects but i need some advice cause I know its a massive decision but I need to make it soon and not feeling too happy with my subjects (chem and geog), especially biology!

Unfortunately for me I have to do everything myself as our teacher is pretty much useless so I'm just trying to keep up with tuitions alongside alot of research and pmt's summarized notes are a godsend for me as they give me a perfect base to add on to, and I've also found that for AS and A level biology all you really need to do is read and properly understand every single detail (no matter how minute) in the textbook and you'll be good to go
