I've been watching gardening videos for quite some time now in preparation for starting my own garden. I had so many moments watching this video where things I've heard before suddenly made sense. I love your style of teaching, I'm learning so much from you. Thank you

Thank you for sharing your garden and knowledge with us. I’m a KZbin gardener too. It’s my 3rd year and ever year I try to get better. This year I’m trying intercropping/companion planting. I found your channel in my research. This is very helpful and I and so happy I found your channel because it has so much to offer. I hope we can learn more from each other as we grow our gardens and our channels!

Nice; I’m glad it was helpful! I didn’t do as much under planting this year as normal because our spring was incredibly cold for quite late-need to get back into “layering”

Polycultures all the way! This year I am going to go even crazier and try to do peas, tomatoes planted soon after, and then when the spring peas are spent the beans can go on. I did a video before on growing fall peas while still harvesting the last of our summer tomatoes from the same trellis. Someday my trellises will collapse from the weight. 😂

i'm suffering with a major case of "analysis paralysis" and this video was SO incredibly helpful to just see someone go through the logic of placement. Since this was 2 years ago did you find that this was enough food? I am also interested in canning/freezing extras for the winter and was wondering what you thought of your harvest & if you would have planted more or less of some things. Thank you again!
@WellGroundedGardens
@WellGroundedGardens Жыл бұрын
Hi! First I’m so glad that it was helpful. That garden size was dictated by the space we had and definitely was too small to grow much for canning. We just moved to a larger property and I’m working on a video about sizing up the growing area to produce more of our own food including for preserving. I’m landing at around 1,250 SF of bed area and then some more space for perennials like berry bushes and fruit and nut trees.

Terrific video with an outstanding summary of your thought process! How do you reach the plants that are shielded by the trellis? I can seem to reach more than twoish feet into my beds without putting my hand down and compacting the soil
@WellGroundedGardens
@WellGroundedGardens 2 жыл бұрын
That is the one thing I would flag as an issue. I did a separate video on what we do and don’t like about the trellis, and we go into more detail, there, but short version: I can reach in three feet, and then I use the one foot strip closest to the trellis as a “pollinator plant zone” with hyssop, borage, and holy basil.

Bush beans can be tucked in at the base of the north side heirlooms, no reason not to, especially if you trim the lower tomato branches (always a good idea).
@WellGroundedGardens
@WellGroundedGardens Жыл бұрын
I’ve done with with fall-planted peas (using the trellis area left by the pruned-off lower tomato leaves) but haven’t tried bush beans. I’ll give that a shot!

I’m curious, you have a 20’ X 20’ plot. But looking from the south you have a 4’ bed, a 3’ path, a 4’ bed which is 11’ so on the North side you have space for another path and a bed. In my garden the noon sun is where your south west is so on my south east I have a path an a garage and to my south corner and south west boundary I have a neighbours garage and a 6’ high fence.to my north west I have a 20’ high conifer hedge that overgrown half my plot. My plan for this year is to cot down the offending hedge to 6’ 8” (all 60’ of boundary ). Then use 28” X 9” concrete blocks on 2 sides of the plot to level the plot and solve a drainage problem, (the neighbours garage base no drain so he ha buried it onto his gravel garden which was laid over plastic sheet) I don’t have to water that part of the garden 🙁. All sides of my veg plot is a 2’ border that is planted with foxgloves, primulas and snapdragons with some marigolds Ansell herbs . I’m on the East side of the Clwyd estuary and we are blessed with April breezes Kathleen being the latest so I’m just wondering where to put a small green house. With luck you may comment on this.

Do you prefer to have the trellis right at the edge of the beds, and grow the plants up the back side instead of planting them on the inside?
@WellGroundedGardens
@WellGroundedGardens Жыл бұрын
For the beds at our last place I had them right at the edges and curved over the walkway, but at our new place I’m running them down the middle of the beds (they’re narrower beds)
