Maine summer 2023 was no joke. For those who do not live in Maine... it rained almost every day. We had washed out roads and every Maine town was declared a natural disaster needing relief. Fema is now here. How the F*** you built a cabin during that weather is beyond me. You get credit just for starting your journey in the worst year ever.

I’m really glad you knew what it was like. I would show up from the 5 hour drive and set up in the rain, it would rain on me all day and at night I would freeze. It really tested my spirits a couple times brother. I’m praying this next year is better.

Cole radon , run your pipe through your wall right now before you install wallboard,that way you do not have too run the pipe up the out side wall, also do you think that heated basement floor would work for you.? You could breakup the basement floor and put in old water well, how about a pumper truck for cement, hose could run though the windows 😂

I would suggest that after you put your posts up to then put 6x6 beams on top of your posts. Then build your floor frame on top of your beams. This is a much stronger build method. You would not be relying on the strength of the bolts in your posts to take the weight of the building.

Fun in the rain last year. Seemed like every time we went up to work on our cabin it was raining. We did the same foundation as you guys, definitely to many rocks and roots to dig down for a foundation. Ended up having over 2 feet of gravel brought in to build on after we cleared the spot. Cabin looks 👍. Fyi if your near any amish you can get a decent deal on limber.

You need to put knee braces on the posts. When installing insulation you need to overlap and staple the edges to create a vaper barrier. When putting one piece of ( T111 ) on top of another when your wall is taller then 8'-0" you need to put a ( Z ) strip of metal between the upper and lower T 111 sheets to prevent water infiltration at that point.

A few loads of mulch then gravel to work inti that mud will surprise you . Are you going to burn wood and have solar power too? Water catchment system. That is a pretty small cabin. Are you going to expand with your expanding family?
@PracticalforestАй бұрын
Thank you so much for watching!! We are going to order the gravel and improve the trail greatly as one of our first tasks back this season once the snow clears. We are redoing the wood stove right now for the cabin and will have that video up tomorrow! So yes we will burn the wood! And we are 100% going to do solar panels. I positioned the roof specifically for the panels. 12x20 is actually a decent size for us as a camp right now, our next piece of land we buy, we will build an entire house on!

Hello congratulations! If you had to start a house over, what would you start with first? In my country there is a quote about what is done for the first time in a house, may it be much easier for you for the rest of your life. And it really makes your life easier. Come on, I told you to know in the future. When you start building a house, the first thing you do is the wooden toilet outside to sit and meditate comfortably, and the access road to have access with machinery. And then you can continue with what you want.

Hi I’m a new member to your community and I love the videography, you have a great voice for narration, (yep there’s a small but coming) your narration feels a little rushed, just slow your pace and if you’ve written a script, when you’ve used punctuation eg a comma, a small break or as my English teacher used to say take a breath boy take a breath. If you use a full stop. Actually stop take a couple of breaths and then continue, Oh and 1 more small thing, Well done on your build and I’m super impressed with not only your work but your willingness to be scrutinised by the world, look my suggestions are purely that, you do what is comfortable for you, however having seen others do exactly the same and others make the same suggestions, I thought I’d offer that nugget of hopefully seen as help, you seem to surge making 1 sentence out what should be 3 or 4 with pauses,

When you are from 5 hours away and sleeping in a tent in the rainiest season on recorded history, the plan changes
@mikeveineАй бұрын
The rainy conditions should have drove home the point I made. Also, you will regret not properly choosing and preparing your building site. Building in a simi-wetland area was a bad idea. It will always be a mud pit when it is rainy. Better to choose high ground to build on or build it up beforehand. You should have built the cabin by the log landing area unless there was a better, higher spot.

Hey Joe, just came across your channel. Am in the middle of watching your montage of the build so far. You’re a beast man lol. Great work and congratulations on your land & build. Got a question for you. I read in the comments that you’re from the Manchester NH area and that you own a Painting Co. we purchased a brand new log cabin in Francestown NH last year. We are looking for someone to treat & stain/seal it. Do you do work like that?
@Practicalforest2 ай бұрын
Hey Steve, first off thank you so much for watching and supporting our channel. Congratulations! Francestown is one of my favorite towns. We go swimming at scobie pond (haunted lake if you aren’t local) all of the time in the summer. I’m originally from Weare/New Boston. I live two towns away from Francestown right now, if you check out our Facebook you will see videos of us painting houses all in your area. I would love to come by and give you an estimate. Also I don’t want my framing skills to be a judge for my painting skills. 😂 Here are our links! facebook.com/share/5udRj9SVzSnMArze/?mibextid=cR73hX www.integritypaintingnh.com

Hey Joe, thank you for the timely reply! Yes I am thoroughly Fqmiliar with Scobie pond. I kind of grew up in Francestown. My grandfather had 350 acres off of Ferson Rd and my family was up there every weekend and almost all summers growing up in the 60’s & 70’s. I joined the military for 26 years and then moved back here (Mass) after living in Seattle & New Orleans for a time. My experiences in Francestown were the major reason we bought the log home on 8.5 acres there. Absolutely Love it there ❤ I would definitely like to have you come over for a look & discussion & estimate. How should I privately contact you to set up a date and supply you with my address?

Sorry for the late reply KZbin doesn’t show responses to my comments for some reason. Thank you for your service sir, I appreciate my freedoms as you can see. We are in our first house right now but I would jump at the opportunity for 8.5 acres in francestown if I could afford it. my wife and I are in love with the historic homes in town. Here is my website, you can call or text my business cell phone number and see some of the work we have done locally. Www.integritypaintingnh.com

Use all those sticks to make a “ corduroy” road.

I wanted too but then when I put the real road in I will have to move all of them. It’s a hard choice

New sub here you said you plan to build another cabin for a guest cabin and do you plan to use the downed trees you have to make it as it would be free just a lot of extra work to build it just wondering on what your plans are for the next cabin

Hiiii! Thank you so much for watching our channel. I want to build one or two more on our land. At least one of them I will make from all of the wood on the property. I think it would be special.

How come you didn't set your posts in a metal seat onto the concrete footers? Won't the moisture from the ground seep into the concrete and then into your studs? Especially with all the rain you're saying Maine gets. Just asking.

Hey! I don’t want to attach them because it always gives me the option to jack up the cabin and adjust if I need to in the future. The 6x6 are pressure treated! Thanks for watching and supporting

You could have just ripped the plywood down to size in between the joist and nailed blocking to joist to fasten plywood to instead of working on your back under the floor. Just another way of doing it
@PracticalforestАй бұрын
Doug for our next cabin we might actually do that technique! It was daunting to know I would have to rip them all with a circular hand saw but hopefully I can get a table saw out there for the interior finish

Hey brother thanks for watching. I learned the trade of painting when I was younger and started my company 3 1/2 years ago. I started off in a small Nissan Sentra painting small bedrooms and worked my way up to bigger and bigger jobs. Do you want to start a business?

I think what you're doing here is heroic so what I think probaby won't matter much but why not hire out a blade for 4 hours at at least cut a basic unimproved trail to walk and ride the quad upon? I'm guessing you spend a fair amount of time gpoing back and forth to the main road at times. safety and efficiency, that's all I'm suggesting. Congrats!
@Practicalforest2 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for watching and supporting! Half of me felt like clearing the road to the cabin would be to much work. I guess it was a fear made decision. Now that I have a cabin shell to sleep in and a better home base i will cut the trail back better when I go up next. What you think does matter to me, I’m new and only have one mind. Through suggestions like yours my property gets better and the channel gets better. Thanks again

@@Practicalforest To your credit, I had a piece of land like that once with a similar dream and vision. I spent probably the first two years obsessing over cutting in trails and dropping nuisance trees and drilling wells and really just the infrastructure stuff that would eventually support my efforts to build later when I had more money. Well, then the Iraq war came along in 2003 shortly after getting married and starting a family. That dream got sold off for childcare money, a minivan, and a swimming pool for my daughters. At least I still have my Stihl 026 that did most of that clearing. Fast forward nearly 20 years and I’m looking at retiring and revisiting those plans. This time, I won’t fuss over details so much hopefully and I’ll just build and enjoy and then improve as I go. Just be safe and enjoy friend. All the best!

Take an apprenticeship in whatever trade you want and join the union that way you get paid well while you learn and will have a pension when you retire. It’s the smartest move to take if you don’t want to go to college and get stuck with a huge bill from your college education. You can put money in bank instead of being in debt!
