I have to portage around several dams when I kayak down the full length of the lower Colorado River this November. I was dreading having to buy a set of portage wheels and haul it on the rear deck of my kayak. I hate the idea of something that bulky on the deck plus the added weight. Thank you sir. I do beleive you have saved my boody from some serious heartache and cussing.

Sounds like a fantastic trip, and I'm glad my videos might help make it a little bit better!

I'm trying a Portage with a 13.6 foot tandem kayake. Lol I'm trying to figure out how to carry it...

Your comment got flagged for review, an area I never remember to check - my apologies David! Portaging a tandem would be tough simply because I don't imagine the center of gravity would be over top of either cockpit. If the trails will allow it you might want to get a cart of some kind. Good luck!

Thanks EconoChallenge! Portaging a kayak will never be as easy as a canoe, but I feel like I've closed the gap somewhat.

Could you possibly make an instructional video of how to safely lift the kayak onto your shoulders? Your yoke design is great! My kayak is quite heavy and i am worried about wrenching my back lifting it improperly.....im 64 yrs old !

My apologies for a super slow reply! I just did something I rarely remember to do, which is to check for comments that got flagged for review (potential spam) and that's where your comment landed - so I didn't see it until just now. I'm not sure my method could be described as the 'safest' approach out there, but on my first trip this year I'll film it and put it on my channel.

How much does your kayak weigh?

What size backpack is that and what brand? Is it a 40 liter??
@KayakCamper7 жыл бұрын
KZbin marked this one as 'held for review', and since I never actually check those comments I saw your four-month-old post there just today! My backpack is a Eureka 110L pack. No, I don't take anywhere remotely near 110L of gear, but when you're putting a kayak on your shoulders, your backpack can't reach above your shoulders or you run into a bit of a problem! So I needed a wide and deep pack that would give me plenty of room 'at the bottom' so to speak. I've been using that exact pack for maybe 7-8 years now and it's been great.

great video what does your kayak weigh 42ish?... mine is 57 pound(heavy mother) 14ft need to make a yoke fit 14inches deep and 30 inches across/beam width. thoughts> Pelican Trek 140 Kayak Review..

Mine's 50 pounds,16 feet long. Looks like that kayak's cockpit tapers slowly narrower towards the front, which is perfect for my yoke design, so you should have no problems building one. Because it doesn't seem to have much in the way of dry hatches, you'll have a bit more of a challenge using things like your PFD / paddle to help with the balance, so I'd first find the balance point of your cockpit (completely unloaded) and build a yoke that's going to lock in place as near to that spot as you can.
