Great video, to speed up trimming the rafters to the hip, you can use the trim tool to cut the rafters against the hips, this leaves the box with a missing side, to fix this, you can then reselect them and use the properties to make the polylines "closed". When trimming you can also use the "fence" command to select the rafters all at once down the centre of the hip, hope that makes sense

Hi Edward. In E09 we did a roof plan. I added sarking, facia, roof covering and rafters as i followed in that video. Now we are doing a roof framing detail and in following you in this video i created a 2D (Flatten layout) of that roof which gave me a drawing with curve or rounded edges. Do i have to start from scratch (meaning without added sarking, facia etc.) before i do the roof details?

Ed thank you for the great tutorials as always. This kind of diagram does not, however, give you the dimensions you need to cut the boards for assembly. Is there perhaps more value in doing this in 3D so that you can , in the end, measure all the lenghts?

You are correct. You would not va she to get cut lengths from this diagram. 3D is always the best way to go, so you can pull BOM schedules out of it. I think an easier route however would be to do a typical section view showing the rafter connections, with dimensions and annotations, would or could be just as Helpful.

Starting at 4:49. Just a bit curious. When we flatten the roof plan to create the roof details, I didn't see an obvious change in ridge lengths. Are these lengths true? Looking from above a slope would project a shorter length than if we looked at it from another angle. My concern is to ensure that as a DIY (er) I can cut my rafters accurately. Hope you understand.

I think the reason you didn't see an obvious change in length is because I was transitioning from a perfect orthographic 3D view (isometric) to a orthographic plan view. The lines would essentially be the same length. Nonetheless, because we're pulling a plan view from an existing 3D drawing, we wouldn't have to worry about the lines being incorrect. As long as the 3D model was done accurately, you plan views and elevation views will be accurate. Thanks for your question.

A faster way to do this while getting the same 3D look of SketchUp is to use the structural beams object option in the tool palette.

You are indeed correct. The rest of this comment is for everyone's knowledge: I would recommend not to model these in 3D if its not going to add to your final renders, or if it's not required to be modeled by your client. Also, the 3D might not be necessary for approvals. It will save your computer some RAM, and time and money.
