I was going to work on the tube and Mckenzie Crook was sitting opposite me, we both got off at Oxford Circus and were going in the same direction, so i told him what a wonderful series it was, we had a good ole 10 minute chat until we went separate directions, lovely guy, really shy and understated. I love The Detectorists. I’m no history/archaeology buff but I find this show really sweet & wholesome for some reason. What can be nicer than indulging in & being passionate about such a gentle hobby. The other characters are fab too. Deadpan Russel, Sheila with her sixth sense and we mustn’t forget Simon & Garfunkel. This is what the BBC does well, unusual & quirky stuff.

Like you say there were lots of appealing characters.Simon & Garfunkel were an amusing pair and the other club members had scope for development so why not do more episodes.Sometimes it's nice to watch something with no horrible people in it,even S & G had me interested in their antics.

I'm not lying when I say this but at the end of the previous series, I literally, and for the first time in any TV show, I actually punched the air with both hands and let out a joyous "YES!!!" as they both realised what was happening. The reason Detectorists resonated with people is that it was two regular, traditional englishmen with a slightly eccentric habit. Could have been 100 years ago. Of course they had to have the ethnic minority and the lesbians, but they were peripheral. The core of the series was a deep Englishness which touched us in a profound, genetic way.

Talking of parodies, the BBC breakfast couch does a good job of apeing itself. Its uncomfortable to watch these kinds of interviews, where the hosts really don't have much knowledge or interest in who they're talking to. Its unfair to blame the presenters entirely but rather the tired and cynical brain sapping format that is the rolling 'news' show.

The humour is subtle and the charm is in the small details, the strong casting of all the characters and the simple pleasure of being set in the British countryside. and the music I have to add. Never a fan of that folky sound, but I am now, because of this very wholesomely, charming series. I hope we get another.

Thank goodness I happened to watch BBC news that morning...I would never have discovered The Detectorists otherwise. We binge watched the entire 3 seasons in 2days. Have yet to watch the Special but looking forward to it. I really hope that they make another series. Gentle lovely comedy with quirky characters & laughed a lot. Loved Sheila! And so lovely to see Diana RIgg and her daughter acting together.😄

Just in case you aren’t aware there was an earlier special between series 2 and 3.

I must admit I didn’t watch much Telly till lockdown when suffering from cabin fever I stumbled upon Detectorists, I fell in love with it. It’s such a gentle comedy. I finally convinced my wife to watch it a couple of months ago and she binge watched it, she loves it too.

I am very new to Detectorists and what a gem of a series. I started watching in the new year (2023) and have now watched all 3 series...just this Christmas special to watch. the 30 minute program goes by so quickly. Every one of the cast is perfect and relatable. I now want a detector.

Same with me. Having only ever seen part of one episode, I just watched all the episodes in the last couple of weeks, followed by the one off Christmas episode (my least favourite). Well written, beautifully filmed and with some great characters, the half hour episodes seemed to pass all too quickly.

Came to this late and binge watched all of it last week… currently starting it again for a second watch. I’ve seen it called a ‘ gentle comedy’ which it sort of is… but so much more than that. It’s so well written, full of dry humour, brilliantly acted and it reminds us that it’s simplicity and the small things that make life worth living. A hobby, friendship, the pub, chatting about nonsense, the countryside etc etc. we really don’t need much to be content … that’s my takeaway. It’s a show that makes you feel better

So it's not only here in North America that morning show hosts are vacuous tools, huh?
