There's an important thing that was missed in this video! The instructions from Cascade are telling you to use way too much detergent. I've made a follow-up video about detergent dosing and also addressed a lot of your concerns in it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gp2ZXph9edWco7c If packs were sold with, maybe, tear-off baby packs meant to be thrown in along with the main wash, I'd be elated. And, to be clear, it's not like I think packs, tabs, whatever don't work - I'm sure plenty of you have fine experiences with them. They just... well as I said they don't make sense to me. Not for a dishwasher, anyway!

I use the packs but I have never just tossed them in the main body of the dishwasher. I have always put them in the detergent area of the dishwasher. I have not been told otherwise and I never really stopped to look at the instructions and these packs work great unless they have sat too many years as I do have a habit of only buying them on sale.

I'll never scrape my plates again before loading and I'm going to start using the gel detergent instead of the packs. And since it's only about 1 gal of water/cycle I'm not going to obsess any longer about the tens of gallons of water that I thought was being wasted! This is one of your most practical and fascinating videos. Much appreciated.

tl;dr from both this and the followup: - Don't worry about rinsing dishes before putting it into the dishwasher - Heat sink water before turning on Dish Washer - Use the 'Normal Setting' on your dishwasher to make sure the pre-wash happens - Use powder Detergent (DON'T use dish soap, pods, or gels) - Place in both the main wash, and pre-wash cups - Don't use TOO much - the amount you need correlates with how hard your water is. If you have a powdery residue or film on dishes, you may be using too much. Try filling it halfway - Don't sweat whether or not it has phosphates - Get rinse-aid, it can not be included in detergent - Consider getting a dishwasher cleaning product, like Glisten Dishwasher cleaner

I just moved into a rental with a dishwasher for the first time last month and I absolutely didn't know anything about how to use one. I always had a lot of doubts about those little colorful packs. So I stumbled on your video trying to figure it out! And boy am I glad I did, I tried it for the first time last night and it worked like a dream. Washing dishes remains one of my least favorite things to do, and now I only have to do it for a few things that aren't dishwasher safe!! A) My wife totally needs to see this: scrubs the dishes before they go in the dw, tosses a pack directly into the tub, and wonders why the dishes still aren't clean. B) *Part* of the "dishes must be scrubbed clear before entering the dishwasher" may come from the commercial kitchen side. Those washers are *basically* not designed to do any scrubbing (that's what the sprayguy (me for 5 years!) is for). The washer is only designed to break down any remaining films and sanitize the dishes in very quick order.

@Biden DidntWin I didn't know about running the hot water before starting the dishwasher until recently. Sometimes I forget anyways. My dishwasher cleans everything perfectly either way. Been using powdered detergent my whole life. Also, according to my dishwasher manual, you don't need as much detergent if you live in an area with soft water. I live in an area with very soft water, so I started filling the pre-wash/main-wash cups 1/3rd full or less. Still cleans dishes perfectly.

My Miele dishwasher has a salt compartment but no designated pre wash space. I checked the manual and it says that you can put detergent on the door if the dishes are very dirty. It also says that the difference of powders / gels vs pods is that you can tune the amount of detergent. So yes, Miele is with you on this one. Great video by the way!

Better late than never. I watched your above video yesterday (5th December 2023) and was totally fascinated with you research and findings. I did not know that there were such great differences between US and European Dishwashers. I find the idea of a compartment for pre-wash powder and also a sterilise cycle are things we could use here, but drawing hot water from the tap and not having built in water softener, well you can keep those ideas on your side of the pond. Today I used out and and after a search, I bought a 1,5kilo bag of Dishwasher Powder for €2,85 giving me 100 washes. I normally pay around €8.00 for 50 Tabs. So far so good. I will now test with 15gr Powder per load and a tablespoon of Powder for the pre-wash. wish me luck I have a Bosch machine WITH salt softener and no separate compartment for cleaner Thanks for the excellent presentation

This video helped me realize something: My house’s dishwasher soap dispenser is at the bottom of the door blocked by the dish rack. It doesn’t open far enough to let a soap pod fall out! The pod doesn’t dissolve all the way so the rinse cycle leaves soap film over everything. Maybe it’s older than I think and was designed before the popularity of pods, intended instead for regular detergent granules 🤔

Okay, you actaully made me look at my Dishwashers Owner's manual. This is a BOSCH and I am located in Germany, for reference. The dishwasher does not have a pre-wash compartment. In the instructions it says (roughly translated) "Attention: due to the different activation time of detergent tablets you might have inferior cleaning power with short-running programs. We recommend powder detergent". Furthermore: "If you use powder detergent, we recommend pouring in a little extra directly into the tub for intensive cleaning, in addition to the detergent dispenser".

@@TechnologyConnections It's just uncommon at least in German dishwashers. It is not really necessary, at least with the programmes used by the dishwashers here. On the other hand, using dishwasher salt for descaling the water is absolutely normal and seems quite uncommon in the US. It's just interesting to see the different "traditions" that have evolved in dishwasher operations. You would expect that how to wash dishes would be quite the same all over the world. So for the Bosh-Models having only one compartment seems to be more a thing of that tradition and not so much from giving into pods.

@rupertpsmith
@rupertpsmith Жыл бұрын
This was a very persuasive argument for using the prewash function. Something also worth checking is if the seal on your dishwasher's detergent dispenser is functional. I would rather not use packs, but I've gravitated towards them recently because my dishwasher is an ultra-cheap model (landlord provided) that immediately oozes out any gel you put in. I figure the packs are a little more likely to not get swept away in the pre-wash, and they're at least not running down the door as soon as I close it. You can check this with a gel by filling it up, closing the doors, and then not running the dishwasher immediately. Check back in a few minutes to see if you have a mass goo escape on your hands. If so, there's no way that gel is making it all the way to the main wash

I don't know why or how, but I ended up watching a video about a guy talking about dishwashers and their detergent, for an instance: I dont own a dishwasher and never used one once in my life. yet I feel that I now know everything there is to know about them and its detergent, yet I strangely enjoyed every bit of it. Conclusion, I don't know how you did it buddy but you sure kept my interest throughout all the video I'll give you that, for a subject that I have no interest in nor i had ever, you made me completly involved into it. AMAZING SPEECH, all to add, I just saw the description and comes this is merly a PART 2!, I have to watch part 1 ASAP I NEED IT.

I’ve always found that if I put a pod in the actual dispenser it almost never dissolves completely, which is why I started just throwing them in the tub, but I can see now why that doesn’t make much sense. However, I’ve also heard some plumbers say to just throw them in the tub too… we just got 2 massive packs of pods but I think I’ll be switching to powder once they’re gone!

A quick search would tell you that YES dishwasher pods are made of plastic just like tide pods. You think Unilever or proctor & gamble care about your health or the environment? I didn’t watch either all the way through, but you cured my issues with dishwashers, since I didn’t have one until college and thought they just sucked. I generally used prewash but never made sure it had hot water, so I always prescrubbed with hot water and they came out clean! Never mind that by prescrubbing did exactly what you recommend. This video made me pull up my Zanussi dishwasher's manual guide. First step literally says to turn the tap on before starting the programme. This was quite the educational experience. Also, I'm in Europe.

Same, but this year just getting appliances has been a challenge, I had to order a new Whirlpool Dishwasher from Best Buy back in July after my old one started spitting water all over my kitchen floor, and it took till the end of Oct. for it to arrive from them, and get installed with all the delays, and backorders. had to get a new fridge after my old Fridiagre(never buy one from them they are junk)side by side gave up the ghost right before Thanksgiving, got the last black Whirlpool top/bottom fridge/freezer with ice maker around me from Lowe's(every other store was out of stock or wanted over $400 to ship it to me) within 4 states, then I ordered an Artic King 5 cu ft chest freezer from Walmart's website to go with it, and it was the very last on on the website with them out of stock for almost a month after my order. and I also to get a new tankless water heater this year after my nearly 30 year old gas one started to leak, and had to special order a Japanese Tankless model paying extra to get it, so I could have hot water, and get the job done, as I had to get all new plumbing to go with it. Just the pitfalls of inheriting your grandparent's house originally built in the mid 50's.
