Organic chemistry isn’t that different from an adventure game, with substrates as characters, nucleophiles as magic potions, and reaction conditions as different magical kingdoms. In this episode of Crash Course Organic Chemistry, we’ll learn the tricks to this game so that we can figure out which transformation, or mechanism, will occur when we combine any substrate with any nucleophile. Let’s go on an adventure!

I love this series, organic chemistry can be so much fun when you don't have to learn all of it in one semester with a deep emphasis on grades

Why would problem 4 react through SN2 if the nucleophile is weak? I though weak nucleophiles were for SN1 only.

Most of the organic chemistry episodes have gone over my head, so I skip them, but putting it into D&D terms made it palatable. (I'm probably an outlier, but I wanted to say how much I appreciate the extra effort)

Follow up, I found "we might expect A, but B actually occurs" derailed me a few times when I knew the answer, but then doubted it when you brought up a wrong answer as a contrast. Since this is information I'm trying to memorize, talking about the right answer first (or only mentioning the right one) may be more helpful. Thank you! #NeverNotLearning

How does one know which direction a reaction goes? Like, in the example 3 at 12:52, the result is counterintuitive to me: we start with stable methanol, and the reaction goes in the direction of formation of a strong acid (which is quite unstable). Why doesn't the reaction go the opposite way? How do we decide which direction it is supposed to go?

The kind of game you're describing sounds more like an RPG (role-playing game). You go for an adventure in RPGs, too, but an "adventure game" usually means either: - a (point-and-click) puzzle-solving adventure game (e.g. Grim Fandango or The Secret of Monkey Island) - an action-adventure game (e.g. Tomb Raider or The Legend of Zelda series).
