I'm a little confused on where you got 115 from, 120 + 5y-5=180. Wouldn't you add 5 not subtract it?

He combined the like terms, 120 and -5 were on the same side, so combining it would be 120 - 5 = 115

You're speeding through the equation in all of these videos, but not explaining WHY 1 was chosen to be subtracted. As opposed to 9. In another video you subtracted the first number in the equation. So how do I know what to help my son with when I'm reteaching him this for his homework?

Are you talking about from the equation "9x+21=11x-1"? The reason why I added 1 was to isolate the x variable on the left side. By adding 1 on both sides I obtained 9x+22=11x. Then I group the variables on the right side by subtracting a 9x on both sides to obtain 22=2x. Now the last step is to divide by 2 on both sides since my variable x is being multiplied by 2. My final result is 11=x or x=11
