In this deeply personal episode of "True Colours," we delve into the journey of Euryale Enitan, an American graduate student who made the difficult decision to detransition after nine years of identifying as transgender. In "Episode 2: Detransition," Euryale candidly shares her experiences, highlighting the challenges and regrets she faced throughout her medical transition.
Growing up in a conservative environment with rigid gender norms, Euryale struggled with her identity and internalized societal perceptions of masculinity and femininity. Influenced by older transgender individuals, she embarked on a path of transition, seeking a sense of community and belonging. However, as she began hormone therapy, Euryale encountered numerous physical complications, including genital atrophy, swelling, and rashes, which persisted long after ceasing hormone treatment.
Euryale's detransition journey also involved undergoing breast removal surgery, a decision she now deeply regrets due to unforeseen complications and the loss of future fertility and breastfeeding capabilities. She opens up about her struggles with post-surgical depression and self-harm, shedding light on the lack of comprehensive information provided to individuals undergoing gender transition procedures.
Throughout her narrative, Euryale highlights the challenges of accessing supportive healthcare and therapy services for detransitioning individuals, emphasizing the societal pressure and lack of understanding surrounding detransitioning experiences. She raises critical questions about the ethics of medical interventions for transgender youth, particularly concerning the administration of puberty blockers and hormone therapy without sufficient informed consent.
As she reflects on her journey, Euryale underscores the importance of allowing children to explore their identities without imposing predetermined gender norms, advocating for a more compassionate and nuanced approach to addressing gender diversity in society.

I’m a female but I felt very masculine when I was a teenager, I dressed as a boy because I didn’t like how women and girls dressed at the time, But I just found out a was a tomboy girl who then grew up to like embracing my femininity by myself, I’ve never got any pressure to transform my gender or forced to be feminine, and I thank god for that, I was just a kid going through a phase. Please let kids be kids.

I mean this in the kindest way - if someone is so easily influenced by others as to change their gender, that in itself must be a mental health issue. I believe that being so susceptible to persuasion as to undergo surgery with such drastic, life-altering consequences, is not the act of a rational person and is symptomatic of a deeper underlying problem. That said, what about (instead of people undergoing surgery) we expanded our notions as to what is feminine and what is masculine? I believe if society was more tolerant of tomboy-women and girly-presenting-men then we would all be happier in general. It might even be enough to resolve someone's gender dysphoria without going under the knife and ending up infertile for the rest of their lives.

She didn't have a family/community, and the trans group she met acted like a community that she was missing out, which is why it was easy for her to get influenced by it. This is why kids need good adult role models else they'd find it themselves and its not always a good pick.

as a detrans woman myself, i really feel for her and resonate with her story. i was on testosterone for 5.5 years, starting just one year shy of legal adulthood, and also had my breasts removed. i’m filled with so much regret. i’m currently fighting to try and get breast reconstruction covered. we need to bring back prolonged, non-affirmative therapy before medical transition.

I cannot overstate the bravery it takes to detransition. You don't have social media to back you, if anything social media with all they can to silence you. Anybody can transition, a very select few are strong enough to recognize their mistake. This isn't to say everybody who transitions did so erroneously, but I would argue the overwhelming majority do it for attention

All the detransitioners I've seen always say how easy it is to aquire hormones, this one saying you get practically get it the same day, whilst all the actual trans people say how difficult it is, that they had to go through xyz therapy sessions before they were even approved. So what is the truth?
@brodietaym8475
@brodietaym8475 2 ай бұрын
I've been asking myself the same question. Although based on the feedback I've been getting from medical professionals including pharmacists where I live (which is in a big North American city) it seems like it's more likely that it is extremely easy to get a prescription for hormones & the starting of the transitioning process seems pretty easy.
@sarah259
@sarah259 2 ай бұрын
The truth is it varies depending on the doctor, country, and laws. I know trans people who say it was almost too easy and they were lucky it turned out to be the right thing for them. There’s also the confirmation bias of detransitioners being the ones who stricter GPs would refuse hormones to. Those people never transitioned or found another doctor who was more quick to prescribe.

Personally for me it should have taken up to 2 years but with law changes in my area I might get them 8 ish months into my evaluation/ therapy. But definitely for me not as easy to get as some may have had it/ made it out to be. The program I’m in has really dug down into why and what makes me feel this way. I definitely don’t feel left out on information that should have been given.

for myself and my friends who have been/are currently on hormones, it was easy. i got my prescription from a clinic within two months back in 2013 with no therapy required beforehand. the only obstacle in my path was getting a parent to sign because i was a minor, which my dad did sign off on because he thought he thought it would help. i was candid about my mental health struggles, self harm, and suicide attempts with the doctor, and yet was still given the green light for testosterone within a handful of appointments. that’s just my experience, though.

I knew I was trans by age 15 and I told my family by age 17. I decided to live my life as my "chosen" gender from age 18 - 28, without any hormones or surgeries, just so I could make sure this wasn't some phase. I'm 36 now, been on Testosterone for 7 years and I've never looked back. I'm so so so much happier now and it's even made me a more productive citizen (I couldn't even leave the house before because of how bad my dysphoria was). I feel bad for all these "kids" but I would never allow someone under the age of 21 to make such a permanent decision without some kind of counseling.

It seems like a lot of these detransition stories begin with girls not being allowed to be tomboys and boys not being allowed to be femboys or just gender expectations constricting them which leads to them taking an extreme, usually after searching for answers alone and social media, and medically transitioning. I’m trans, but I find it sad to see that sometimes trans people can be very pushy online, too. It’s a very complicated issue, especially when discussing gender affirming care accessibility because some need it, but others really don’t. Overall, I think it’s important to try to figure things out without the opinions of others and the internet, do your own research and find scientifically-backed information through peer reviewed sources, and to really give it some thought. You don’t have to take hormones to be trans. If you have serious gender dysphoria with your body and there really is no other solution, then do as you must, but if not, then maybe don’t and just socially transition. Therapy may help, but be careful because they can be biased and push either for or against. Their decisions should be based on observation and science and be professional. In the end, it is your choice, and whether it is people pushing you to do it or to not do it, they aren’t the ones making the choice and living with the consequences.

I appreciate how it begins with how they perceived women and men. Too many, among us all, try too hard to be men/women and to please who knows who. Some of us maybe just need to be Human and not care so much about our gender. I totally know and respect that some people are truly transgender and must transition at the very least in identity, but we need to discuss openly about the importance of not being a caricature of gender stereotypes and about being authentic, yourself, more free from standards/norms, etc. The option to not be binary is also there.

Conducting a medical procedure or even medication without clearly naming the risks and consequences is illegal and unethical. That is commonly known. I don't understand what medical services were thinking when treating this person without much thought. I am pro-trans rights (or Human Rights in general), and this brings up major ethical and health questions, and is telling about the quality of medical services in some parts of the USA. Changing gender physically is a huge decision, with consequences, and really must require a solid psychological analysis to avoid mistakes and of course solid information. Sounds like fast-food medical services to me.

i think human rights have been so ignored in this area. a person must understand the implications of any surgery, its risks aftercare, possible unwanted effects and the same with any medication. i think as sterilization operations are not permitted until 25-due to the huge number of requested reversals that someone making this bigger choice before then, when their minds have not finished developing, is malpractice. i also think psychiatrists should give consent, as changing gender, does not help with underlying issues.

Most of my past lives were of men so I come across as androgynous...but can also get real Girly. When I need a Power Attitude I bring up the memory of the Warrior. From what I understand sometimes when we Reincarnate we get stuck in a rut. If you have mostly been a male your Soul will choose a Female body....again and again until you feel comfortable IN THE BIG PICTURE being a HUMAN. What you don't learn you come back to until you do. And that can be about security, love etc. My son, who I dearly love but can't trust, has been my assassin many times.
