Man you’re doing what the older guys told me. I wanted a new Volvo but God sent me to a little town in Alabama and the older guy told me to don’t get into debt starting out. He said buy an older truck without all the emissions because the new trucks are breaking down constantly. And he was right. We paid $5000 for the truck. We replaced the clutch and it has been rolling ever since. God bless you

Those Freightliner Classic XL trucks are popular with a lot of owner ops. I've seen those very trucks literally rebuilt, new looking on the road and I can guarantee the owners have no problems with them making tons of cash. They were good trucks when they were built and actually very customizable to look good aside of any Pete's, K dubs, Mack or any truck and still get the job done. Good choice Lonestar, you'll get her dialed in. Be safe👍

In regard to your sensitive brake pedal….mine got like that on my FLD. It was like stepping on a brick. No give in the pedal but super sensitive. Turns out, it just needed a new valve behind the pedal. I don’t remember what it cost, but it wasn’t expensive or hard to change. Made the brake pedal softer and gave me more control of the brake pedal. Not sure about the Detroit, but my throttle was sensitive also. I learned to move with it. Then the throttle position sensor went out. I bought a new one and a new throttle pedal assembly, as it had lots of corrosion in the workings of it. Total cost was about $300, but that was 15 years ago. It made the throttle A LOT easier to use. But that was a Cat, not a Detroit. The truck is a blank canvas. Lots of stuff I’d change if it were me, but that’s the great thing about these older trucks. Make it your own. NO TRUCK PAYMENT allows for lots of personalizing and cosmetic upgrades. I will say that the most frustrating thing for me would be that dash. That’s my least favorite part. But…getting rid of the fake wood and customizing it really changes the looks of the interior.

Forgot to mention which you probably already know but everything from the cab back can be matched with a classic xl so even if you can find an fld parts truck a classic will work with 90% of everything you need also hit up nomad trucker or the truckers table they r both at landstar & they have classic xls so they might help point you in the right direction for parts also

50:54 well buddy good luck with the frieght shaker. I hauled steel over rt.22 for years and recognize clarks ferry truck stop where you was. It was a 76 back then. I retired with 35 years running them humps. But i was always able to buy new double bunk coe every 3 or 4 years. They averaged around 51000 in 74 thru 76 . Payments were 5 or 600 then. But i had dependability hauling heavy steel then. Always made a good buck then. Even rebuilding that baby and making a living will be challenging to say the least. Butt you seem to have the heart for it....good luck ole buddy. Retired in daytona...panama j.

I totally agree with your decision, not that my opinion matters. I made the same decision 2 years ago. I do think that you will want/need a second truck to give you flexibility to work on one while making money with the other one. At least that's a dependable base to start with. Good luck.

As I’ve always commented on your videos, debt free is the only way to happiness. If you have to make payments to anyone, make them to yourself (savings account)! You have to figure the cost of fuel empty in comparison to empty. Sometimes it just doesn't pay to take a cheap load as You will not gain anything other than wear and tear on your equipment and loss of funds in fuel.. Miranda over at Trucking Made Successful did a video on this a couple months back.

I'm just wondering why you went what seems to me to be backwards in trucks. i understand about the Detroit 60, older trucks and their benefits but, that truck seems to be run hard and put away wet! Looks like a tremendous amount of work to bring the exterior and interior up to a standard that doesn't involve immediate stomach churning vomit! (I mean that in a good way :) )

It’s usually drivers who drive a manual truck. It’s easier to reach the clutch that way. People who drive automatic trucks usually sit up higher.
