Driving into Downtown Detroit along Woodward Avenue. This past week the city of Detroit celebrated its rebound from one of its darkest financial moments. Ten years ago, Detroit was drowning in $18 billion in debt and it made history when it became the largest municipality in the country to file for bankruptcy. The Motor City has made significant progress in the past decade but it still faces some daunting potholes on the road to recovery --- Story via NPR www.npr.org/2023/07/22/118909...

Things have definitely gotten better financially for Detroit. But it's always been an amazing hub of culture and diversity. The media really attempted to destroy it, but now it's America's Comeback City. And you can tell by the sheer amount of investment in the city, and tbh no city deserves it like Detroit.

I haven’t been to Detroit since I was a kid which, believe me, was a long time ago. My grandmother spent her summers in Grosse Pointe when young and I still have distant relatives living in the Shores. This half-hour seeing the sights really highlights the downside of capitalism, doesn’t it? So much history in these parts. Uniquely American history. I see why progressive companies like Shinola made a home there.

I appreciate your channel so much, though it makes me very envious and makes my life seem so boring lol. Detroit has always fascinated me and as an European from a similar area in Europe, I am very interested in its future and possible revival as a world class city. When I see places like Detroit or Chicago, I always feel like that’s the real America I grew up admiring. I’ve been to California, NY and some other places on the east coast, but they’ve never felt like the “real” America I’ve got to know as a kid through TV. The Midwest just seems so much more authentic. I’ve also been checking out Detroit a lot through Google street view and one thing I noticed is how rich the metro area still is judging by the suburbs. Can’t imagine how it must’ve been in its prime.

I live just a few miles away from Detroit, in the suburbs, and I agree that it has an authenticity that many american cities do not have. I believe part of it is due to the architecture, the city is full of pre-WW2 buildings which is incredibly rare, even here, a country that didn't have to suffer any bombings.

I had heard so many negative things about Detroit, but it looks to me like it has a lot going for it (like that opera house). Like any city, it's got its good and not so good areas, and I'm guessing it got a worse reputation than it deserved.
@gaemr_o5147

I can't lie about Detroit being below the standards of most cities, however it's reputation is exaggerated. People always say it's a lawless and that it's hell on earth, but if you look at the crime statistics, Memphis, St. Louis, and Atlanta (and maybe Baltimore, I'm not sure) are doing worse as of 2023.

There's so much of Detroit north of Highland Park as well. Palmer Park..the apartment district, one of the most unique spreads of apartment buildings in the various sub styles of art deco to be found anywhere. Of course, there's Palmer Park proper with little Lake Francis. Further down six mile, campuses of both University of Detroit, Mercy, and Marygrove College (across from which I was boned nearly seven decades ago). Still further north we encounter the lovely free standing houses of Palmer Woods, with the beautiful Woodlawn Cemetery (fantastic funerary art!) finishing Detroit along the Woodward axis. And then comes...Ferndale....I've noticed how, from the river, right to eight mile...(and beyond), most of the great structures and institutions of Detroit are located on the west side, while along the river, the opposite is true.

👼 You shouldn't have shown it, I liked Deutroid so much that for some reason I thought, I would agree to live there. Of course, if there was a job for me, a little more white people, as well as food prices like in Russia. I don't see Deutroid's death, I see a rebirth. It is necessary to open a special economic zone there, where taxes are the lowest. Gather people in the center so that they live there more, compactly. And also, so that the workforce works there, on a rotational basis, for example, in the summer, when the weather is very good. Move the entire industry there, from heavy to light, and food. It is trite to build factories there, to develop trade and logical chains, so that railway lines go there. And machines, start producing, if not machines, then components for them, for example, motors. Everyone in the world knows very well the quality of American cars and engines. In Russia, there will always be a demand for American engines. Change the engines for their resources, at least for a tree))). Both countries will only benefit! Why does no one see that Deutroid is, in fact, profitable to develop, and invest, and time. Let it no longer be such a giant city as it was. But it is necessary to develop the center, and invest money there!!! This is not a desert, this is not an icy cold, it is even possible to develop agriculture there, where the climate allows you to grow grain, corn, and potatoes. But nothing, this is not there! It seems that they are doing this on purpose. And yet, there are 50-60 years of the United States, and why tourists are not taken there, because this is a time machine. If you put everything in order, so that the cafes were, as in those years, as well as cars, show cars. What do you not see, or do not want to see, that if there is a reconstruction, then tourists will go there, from all over the world, to see the United States, when it was, really the United States??? Even I see it from my God-forsaken country - Ukraine. There is not enough owner, that's what I understood, and all the other problems are far-fetched. Exchange taxes there, and you will immediately see the effect. I think, Deutroid, will make itself known in the future! 😊 🙏 🌼

Funny enough, many of the things you mentioned are actually happening, albeit VERY slowly. The mayor has recently proposed a new land value tax system that will be voted on next year. I'm no expert in economics, but I understand it promotes investment and reduces stagnation. The automotive workers union has also recently secured higher wages and better benefits, I'm curious to see how this will affect the city as it means the working class will be a bit more wealthy. Ford has also been investing over a billion dollars into new research centers in Detroit, they hope to create technologies that make electric vehicles profitable. There is also some farming going on, a few empty patches in the city have been converted into community farms/gardens, and it seems to be spreading. There are also two major construction projects happening (and many smaller ones). The first is the Hudson site, which will be the first skyscraper built in decades, the second is a 3 billion dollar bridge connecting Windsor, Canada and Detroit. I imagine that will spur investment as well. I might be overly optimistic, but I truly believe Detroit is experiencing a Renaissance.
