I think that is the slowest I have ever heard a Detroit idle. It actually runs slow enough to sound like a four stroke. Thats a sweet little engine.
@raycert07 Жыл бұрын
its not gonna sound like a 2 stroke gas engine because these engines use turbos for all of their compression. no odd passage ways and compressing under the crank case, no mixed fuel. its common for snow mobile engines to use these designs on gas 2 strokes because it allows them to get proper oiling. EDIT: turbo OR a kind of supercharger i believe. i think this one uses a supercharger.

Being a one lunger it will not have the same higher sounding the multi cylinder detroit engines have. They will idle at 450RPM no problem.
@daledavies233410 ай бұрын
@@raycert07They use a roots supercharger not as a supercharger, but just to get scavenge airflow. An old engine like this one will have a two valve head, while much later they developed 4 valve heads. On these engines the valves are exhaust, while the intake air flows in through ports in the cylinder liners. The exhaust valves are opened a few degrees before the piston crown gets down to the intake ports to relieve residual combustion pressure in the cylinder. Then when the piston uncovers the intake ports the fresh air flows in to push the exhaust out the valves. Then the exhaust valves are closed just before the piston covers the intake pirts to start pressuring the cylinder to atmospheric on a naturally aspirated engine such as this one.

There was a number of these used as marine propulsion engines. Gray Marine was marketing them with a twin disc marine gearbox throughout the 40’s

Cool engine. Was depressing hearing that a bunch of these went down with their ships. I know some ships were/are used as target practice and therefore sunk, but that seems like more a means to get rid of them than essential for training. The military says the ships provide habitats for fish, but corporations also said that about dumping millions of used tires in the ocean off the coast of Florida (which ended up becoming an evironmental disaster, destroying the coral reef they were dumped on, and would cost millions to remove even a portion of them). Just the scrap metal value alone seems like a giant waste, unless ship breaking for metals alone is cost prohibitive.

Maybe it's because it's a single cylinder, it doesn't have the typical Detroit 2-cycle sound. It sounds a bit like yard equipment, to me. Thank you for the demonstration, and the history. I would not want to have to hand crank a diesel!

They may be wort a few bucks. But most have nothing connected to them and are useless. Then again running it puts ware on it and parts are few. The 2 cycle diesel is great but can't as I know ever make pollution specs. Oil industry does not want efficient engines any way.

@@cdjhyoung no, it's still used the same way as other Detroit blowers, from the look of it.
@ctdieselnut11 ай бұрын
@@cdjhyoung but it doesn't suck, it blows. Yes, the point of the blower was for cylinder exhaust scavenging, but that is accomplished by pressure, not vacuum. Exhaust doesn't go thru the blower.

The blower introduces fresh air at just above atmosphere at the same time as purging the exhaust, hence rootes style blower 👍
