Starting my 1982 GM New Look bus (ex-Calgary Transit #1130) on a chilly Alberta morning in -9 degrees Celsius (15.8 degrees Fahrenheit). Check out www.bus1130.ca/ for more info on this bus!

Worked for a school bus company here in Chicago, used to perform cold starts, the older Diesels say pre 2006 without all the pollution control crap started every time. There was one diesel bus you would have thought was a WW2 Wasp radial the way it barely cranked, wined, coughed, kicked over with a big puff of smoke and shook the whole bus until it had enough heat to burn the diesel. My favorite bus really had its own personality, #145208 was a 40’ old school Cadillac of a bus. The students loved it and when I drove this “rough route” other bus drivers never wanted to the students were relaxed kind and fun. All because this bus was “the coolest!” A couple of the guys sat close up front to listen to the engine, watch the gauges, and just hang. When you cold started this big old V8 diesel you swear it was a living being. Fully mechanical, loud, you couldn’t stand in front of the bus or your ears would ring for the next 30 minutes 😂 old fully mechanical diesels are miraculous engines. They always started, never broke, and even if they did you could swap pumps, injectors, starters, etc with just about any other piece of equipment in the yard from similar years. Not anymore.

Was a transit bus driver for a bit, loved our older diesel buses. They started right up no problem, I loved feeling the shaking of the starter cranking the old beast and how the bus would rock once started, they had plenty of power for merging on highways as a few routes did require a bit of highway driving and the AC blew icy cold even on our 115 degrees summer days, they were tanks like old washing machines and fridges they just ran without fail…. That being said I absolutely hated the newer CNG buses, they were slow as balls, I wouldn’t hit 35 in between stops when loaded, the AC was useless in those buses, it was cooler just keeping the windows open, always broke down, I couldn’t go 3 days without breaking down at least once during summer

ya all did it the hard way, back in the 80's one job I had was starting the bus fleet after sitting for 2 days in minus 15 degree weather, this bus should have had rear start buttons and an opening to add ether right on the engine intake so rather than running back and forth you spray ether right into the intake and hit the start button and used a screw driver on the throttle, trust me after starting some 40 buses that made the difference

I’m thinking that little spritz of ether evaporated long before he ever got up to front of the bus.
@Userqwerty3492 ай бұрын
I installed ether injectors on construction equipment. They shot the tiniest spray of starting fluid into the intake manifold, thats usually all it took. I still see guys spraying half a can of ether into the air cleaner and wondering why they have an ether lock.
@joncalon75082 жыл бұрын
Holy crap that’s gotta kick the daylights out of the batteries…glad they survived and were able to get the engine running. Also, isn’t there a port on the engine to spray the ether into?

You don't rev up a cold engine 2:45
@AllianceB95 Жыл бұрын
Actually a Detroit Diesel especially the 71's prefer to be revved so they have enough oil pressure to lubricate the upper part properly. Kick the rpm up to 1000rpm and keep that jimmy happy. And what you meant is actually the engine doing this to help the fuelpressure.
@jonathanbaird8109 Жыл бұрын
