Joe Louis Arena was completed in 1979 primarily for use as the home ice of the NHL's Detroit Red Wings. In 2017 the Red Wings moved to a new building (Little Caesar's Area) along Woodward Avenue in Midtown Detroit.
Joe Louis Arena was demolished in 2020. The riverfront land it once occupied now hosts construction cranes giving rise to a 25-story residential tower. Because of the land's proximity to Huntington Place (formerly Cobo Convention Center) there is the expectation that the site will soon host second and third tower developments to feature mixed-use spaces to include several hundred hotel rooms aimed at supporting Detroit's growing convention business. Windsor, Canada can be seen in this short video across the Detroit River, which defines the boundary between Michigan and Ontario along this stretch of the international border.
