You’re a good ol’ boy, Gordon. I’m doing up my Series 60 as well and your videos have been a big help. I did splurge for the Detroit tools because time is money. I didn’t want to mess around making stuff, I just bought what I needed so I could get it done and back on the road. It’s my only truck and this is costing me every penny I got, so it’s time to get back to work. Liners and pistons go in today! Thanks for taking the time doing your videos. I love watching you ol’ salts work.

I love your phrase. "If you think it changes the weight it don't no more than spitting in the ocean". That's great.

I was about to comment on the spitting in the ocean. Lol. Everyone builds a motor like it’s a formula one race engine for the championship. Lol. One grind on a rod and they think the motor is toast. Haha. They don’t factor in the random oil or carbon on top of piston slinging weight.

Thank you for all of your great vids!Tip: You can also use lengths of plastic tubing on the rod bolts. Cut it a little long and it helps to guide the bolts around the crankshaft as you push the piston down. If they flop around too much you can squirting some Great Stuff foam in one end while pinching off the section that will cover your rod bolt, then slip it on the bolts after its dry.

Isn't it amazing the difference the right tool makes. That job would have been so frustrating and probably damage the engine with the old spring compressor. I agree with you things are looking very pretty and that truck is almost ready to get back to work.
@57bagre8 жыл бұрын
It should be ready to start up today, I'm just waiting for it to warm up a little more, we should get in the low 50s this afternoon but with high wind, about 35 right now 8:30 my time.

Thanks for posting, Gordon. A small addition for peoples, who have to do this operation - nstalling the piston can go difficult too, if connecting rod rests against the oil injector. Be careful

Thanks for doing this video. I'm pretty good with cars. I think I could do a truck. I'm a driver about to buy my second truck. Never had the opportunity to even see the o rings before. Epoxy trick was educational. Thx for the gas motor ring gap info too.

Great job love the videos . Sometimes I think it maybe easier to install the piston and liner assembly together as the some liners have a chamfer to lead in the rings on the bottom of the liner.

Hey mr Gordon. very good detailed material appreciate your time. Hows that truck runing now? would you recomend the pai kit. Got similar motor getin ready for tear down
@57bagre7 жыл бұрын
Thank you Sir. I can't say I recommend the PAI kit, this is the only truck engine I rebuilt, I don't have any experience with any other brand, it was the least expensive the machine shop could find for me and they said they have no complaints with them. The truck's running fine, no concerns as of yet.
@jaboufawaz6 жыл бұрын
I recommend buying AFA kits instead of PAI.

does it make a difference if you you oil or assembly lube on bearing caps
@57bagre7 жыл бұрын
You will find people who would bet their life on it making a difference, but for me, 3 seconds after you crank the motor up it has whatever oil you put in the crankcase circulating under high pressure and will wash out whatever lube you used instantly. In my opinion, NO difference. Thanks for the question.

I put assembly lube on the backside of the bearings on a little GM four-banger. It spun a bearing upon starting. My machine shop guy said you have to put them in dry because of tight tolerances. I was dubious and thought he was covering his a$$.

do you use any thread locking adhesive on any of the bolts or no. ive heard if people using loctite on hot rods. im not sure if you use it on a detroit
@57bagre7 жыл бұрын
I had the machinist install the pistons on the rods, I personally don't think it's necessary to use any thread glue, the torque is pretty high on those nuts, I think that alone is more that enough. Better to ask your machinist.
@steveallen45205 жыл бұрын

You could have cut them down and used a liner with more lip on it or used a shim ? Are the shims reliable ? Were Gordon's too deep or pitted ?
