I spent the summer of '78 in the hospital after a car accident - I was 12. My grandmother wrote Ernie Harwell and he sent me a package with a letter and a signed team ball and told everyone listening that I was on the "DL" and sent his best. I listened to every game I could. Thanks for posting this.

June 17, 1978, Here's what our experts found out: It was Saturday, under the sign of Gemini. The US president was Jimmy Carter. The UK Prime Minister was James Callaghan. Pope St Paul VI was leading the Catholic Church. Famous people born on this day include Isabelle Delobel and Kumiko Aso. In that special week of June people in US were listening to Shadow Dancing by Andy Gibb. In the UK You're The One That I Want by John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John was in the top 5 hits. Grease, directed by Randal Kleiser, was one of the most viewed movie released in 1978. All Things Wise And Wonderful by James Herriot was one of the best sellers.

I wonder if I even owned my '68 Falcon at this point, with its AM dash radio primed to take in Tigers games on the flagship WJR, or the "Mighty 790," WSGW in Saginaw. I was fresh out of high school, listened to many games with my 91-year old Grandfather, who was living out his last summer at our home.

Man, I heard that. We played a lot of Strat-O-Matic in the '70s, too. Thanks to Ernie and Paul and George and Al, we couldn't get enough baseball. Thanks for the comment!

That was a Saturday--and later that night in Yankee Stadium, Ron Guidry struck out 18 Angels batters!

Of course, Ernie and Paul are magnificent. Still at the height of their powers. But I love the old commercials. When JR really was the Great Voice of the Great Lakes.

now Metropolitan stadium is the ---- Mall of America, the asthmatic's nightmare. I am one of those. I am also blind, and even I disliked the MetroDome. My wife was the only sighted human I ever knew who thought that dome was acceptable for baseball.
I know everyone loves Ernie, and rightfully so, but Paul Carey was always my favorite

as loud as the interference is, you can still hear the voice of the Twins' longtime P.A. announcer Bob Casey. Jon Miller could do a great imitation of Casey among his other voices. His funniest one was the Yankees' Bob Shepherd ordering breakfast.
