To help clean up Detroit, Mayor David Bing has a plan to tear down abandoned homes and ask those living nearby to move.

I dont understand, that house is in ruins. That civil rights leader wont take care of it, and nobody cares what memories it had for him. Good riddens to those houses. I hope Detroit works this out and rebounds

Correct. The good reverend is misguided on this one;tear down these trashed-out houses. It is a shame however, that the folks who take care of their properties would have to have their houses demolished as well. That shouldn't be IMHO.I do hope Detroit rebounds for the sake of those who give a damn.

And what about the white people who left way earlier, was that ethnic cleansing as well? Complaining and using the race card is no solution.

Obviously the memories are not important enough to him to keep the house in good condition. If he doesn't take care of his own, why should the city?

Some of those houses amid the bad ones look good. The owners of those nicer homes shouldn't be forced to move.

That man who said his grandparents are probably turning over in their grave is right and they got no right to be. There are 2 possibilities. 1) Either they or their heirs sold it. In which case they sold their interest, so move on. 2) If they or their heirs didn't sell it "they" are responsible for the condition it's in. If so shame on them. Either way this is where we are today. The real question is does the city continue living with these cancerous tumors growing in the city and cut them out, e.g. tear them down or not. This man wants to do nothing and let the disease continue to spread. Which it will because intelligent people will keep leaving, as they finally see the dangers these abandond structures bring to their neighborhood, their health and physical safety.

stop demolition? a City built for almost 2 million and now about 700,000 and still dropping in numbers. They cannot keep services to neighborhoods that only have a couple people living in them, Street light, fire and police protection, they cannot do it! The city needs to draw in it boundries and become much smaller and much better. its the only way!

Don't matter if you're white or black; if you have the means, you should get out. I can understand if you're a proud homeowner & you don't want to leave, but you can't continue living surrounded by utter poverty.

The reverend is wrong. I am also a christian and support blacks owning property, but when a house looks like that you have to be honest and consider the what is good for the rest of the houses and the neighbourhood.

And if the poor had not messed up these houses so much, demolition would not happen. It is basically a problem of low moral high crime in black neighboorhoods.

Obviously the Mayor and so on are no longer in office but what they should have done was establish a perimeter from the city centre sufficient to hold the current population and repair any repairable homes then let them at cheap rates. Outside the perimeter demolish all vacant homes. Forcing tenants to leave their homes however is absurd.

I like it that the city is starting to clean up these neighborhood of all the blight, but the question I have is, is the city paying fare market value to the people that are living in the homes that are still in decent shape or do they just want them to move?? I'm sure a lot of them don't have money to just move and start over that's why they are still living where they are

because of the weather there, those houses sitting for years, most are unrepairable. the DIY Rehab Attack got a house for a dollar that had been sitting for some years and had to have it raised and the basement taken out and rebuilt. The whole foundation had crumbled and needed to be replaced at a cost of over 30 grand. It had been sitting too long unheated thru too many winters

Wow, modern places got no architecture to them, those old houses restored could be ten times better looking then any modern building, hands down.

Feb.,2020. Mayor Duggan said there are 60,000 abandoned homes. Others estimate it at 80,000. It's probably over 100,000.

It's sad what has happen to "The Rust Belt". Like the musician said that "we need to look to the future". I can see the claim of ethnic/poor cleansing: think where the highways went? I visited Detroit in mid/late 1990s and was saddened at the reality. Population loss has slowed but still continues. That's a good sign. Better sign is that people are taking up the challenge and rebuilding, restoring, revitalizing the Motor City.

So you densify the city by moving people from "failed" neighborhoods to healthier neighborhoods. How, exactly, does this take care of the problem of the dearth of jobs in the city? What will become of the nice areas when these folks move into them if they don't have jobs?

what's the cause? Let me hear some thoughts. What causes people and business to leave? Businesses leave because of never ending tax rate increases and excessive gubment regulation. People have to leave because the jobs are leaving to states where the gubment knows how to grow the economy.

It needs to go down to going to every single abandoned place saying either RESTORE it or RECYCLE it demolition goes no where and no money is made off of it, If we all have my mindset and plan i think i could get followers and make Detroit into his former glory, please if you are all with me join in.

Well demolition needs to stop now! Either Recycle the structure or restore it, those two are more practical, they create jobs and more profit is made.
