Unlike Hasbro, I think that Mattel could improve. As long as we stay vocal, we can change things. Personally, I’d like to see a rubber trex with an articulated, plastic, endoskelleton.

Okay I freaking love the thrash and throw. A few months ago the mechanism broke and I did manage to fix it. I ended up breaking the mechanism again, this was a different part. I did damage the thing cause I had to pry it open. The plastic on the outside I think could hold. But the inside is fragile garbage and needs to be replaced with a stronger material.

There’s always room for improvement with this (and every other) toy line. I agree that some of the features on these could benefit from some changes. I’m personally not that into the tail whipping or sideways bite actions, and I don’t think they add much play value for kids. The production budget should be diverted to something else instead, like electronics, paint, or articulation. With durability and build quality, there’s a trade off with cost to consider. I want the toys to be affordable while holding up to reasonable use. These should be able to withstand playful battle. In addition to the dinos for my personal collection, I also buy some specifically for kids. These include my nephews and the special needs kids I work with (who tend to be a little more rough with toys). I have a pretty good idea of how well these dinos hold up. There are a few parts more prone to breakage than others, like the chomping action on the Baryonyx that you mentioned. The spring popped out after only a few minutes of regular play, and now the action feature doesn’t work properly. Mattel could do better with things like that. But overall, I don’t think major changes are needed when it comes to the durability of the plastic used. This is taking into account how kids typically play with dinosaur toys. These should be able to withstand being bashed together or dropped accidentally-and I’ve found that they do. These shouldn’t be thrown at a wall or used as a bludgeoning weapon. If something like that happens, it’s a totally different issue. I won’t fault Mattel for wacky things like that. One of my kids bit off my Velociraptor’s lip. I don’t think I’m going to ask customer service to resolve that. I love the Kenner figures, but they had issues too. The rubber on my Red Rex tore around the jaw area from chomping on figures. The inner mechanism is also known to break down over time. The Jungle Explorer is wonderful, but it shouldn’t be dropped from trees. Wear and tear, whether it’s on Kenner or Mattel toys, are a sign that they were well loved and played with. One of my favorite things about Mattel’s Jurassic line is the price point. The Extreme Chompin’ Rex at $20 is a tremendous deal. It’s very accessible, even for those with a limited budget, while maintaining really good quality. I know the one you got was irritatingly squeaky, but that’s really not a common issue with these. I’ve purchased 6 of these in multiple variants, for myself and as gifts, and none of them sound like that. I’d love to own a more expensive Rex that’s all-around perfect. But a $70 price tag is just going to be too cost-prohibitive for many families. A lot of parents don’t have the luxury of being able to drop that kind of money on a single dinosaur toy. It would mean that fewer kids would be able to play with these at all. There are definitely some things I don’t like, but on the whole, I’ve been very pleased by the great work Mattel has done with the license. I’m not trying to stay silent or avoid criticism by giving them that praise. Considering all the different factors, I think Mattel has balanced things really nicely. It’s easily one of my favorite toy lines of all time.
@MATTDALOR1AN5 жыл бұрын
Agree and don't agree. I don't see how a 70$ Rubber rex isn't feasible, because Mattel has items in that price range and higher (their imaginext T-Rex is 110$ MSRP). Many people have QC problems, and lots of people I know have breakage (even demo'd briefly in the video). I wish they diverted all extra production budget into plastic Q over "paint jobs", etc. You at least have thoughtful constructive comments, so I'll tip my cap for you, for sure!

I haven't had too many problems with my rexes except for the fact that hy extrene chomping rex won't open its mouth all the way by pressing the button anymore. My biggest problem is the sheer number of rexes. Could we maybe get more spinos a giga or even an extreme chomping sized allo inspired by the one from evolution? I would even love a carcharodontosaurus figure.

@bretbuckley7046 жыл бұрын
Not only that but every rex is the EXACT same mold with a few retools. I think their rexes look great visually, and yah it's the icon of the franchise but fans already have more than enough of their fix on T Rex for a while and are getting burned out. Which is why I'm skipping out on the T-Rex infant pack. I don't know why people are hyping it up and making such a big deal out of it. It's just a repaint pack of two figures most people already have and the colors are hardly accurate. Not to mention the infant rex sculpt looks ugly as hell. I mean I've seen so many custom TLW style repaints of mattel's rexes that look way better that I just don't see the point of having it. I hate to rag on Mattel because what they're doing with Jurassic World absolutely blows Hasbro's offerings out of the water. But in all honesty we don't need dozens of rexes. Instead of rehashing the t rex every other wave, they need to focus on making more big carnivorous theropods that haven't gotten very much attention. If they don't want to do that then they are in desperate need of more vehicles (even if they're fictional like a lot of Kenner's) and human characters we still haven't gotten, like the Franklin that was shown at SDCC and the rest of the characters from Fallen Kingdom that have been constantly skipped over in favor of rehashing more Owens. I mean seriously we have at least 6 or 7 Owens now, and most of them are just repacks. Mattel! Stop with the repacks already!!! There is no demand for them! I really don't want Mattel's JW line to go down fall into the same mess Hasbro got into and start putting out a bunch of stuff nobody asked for, on top of repacking not only things so many people already have, but things that get overstocked and don't have a lot of popularity on shelves. Mattel Jurassic World is my favorite toyline right now. They're doing a lot of things right but they're also getting a tad lazy in some areas. I don't care that they're not like Kenner, and I care even less if the dinosaurs are rubber or plastic so as long as the sculpts are good, I just don't want them to get comfortable with mediocrity and being repetitive.

For the battle damage figures they could just ya know, add the removable dinosaur flesh. I hope you make a specialized video that showcases the good and the bad and tell mattel ways to improve their toyline so it does not go all over the place. But some people might say "oh they already released the plastic stuff so plastic only" that doesn't mean we can't change that!. As for plastic quality and stuff I have a destruct-a-saur rex BUT it has a deformed hand, I do not think this would have really happened with rubber.So they just have to spare no expense. Ways I think Mattel could improve, 1. Proper proportions, Less large feet and bigger tails will help with balance issues and will make a more appealing figure. 2. Less cartoony sculpts and more movie accurate ones, They just look really weird when done wrong. 3. NEUTRAL POSING, Mattel's more recent figures are worrying me. The bite and fight and the green trike are big no nos, Neutral Posing will lead to more play opportunities and fiddling. Unrealistically posed toys with open mouths look cool on shelf's but that's it.

Rewatching this video, I still remember this video and the day my Original Thrash n Throw T-Rex broke from the inside somehow only after having it for less than a year was when i said I wasn’t buying anything from Mattel and I stuck true with it. I don’t hate Mattel, I think they’ve handled the toy line fine but the issues stated in this and the “don’t you see the fleas” video are still issues I see in the Mattel toyline since 2018. They’ve released a lot good figures like the indominus, the sauropods, and the Hammond collection stuff now but there’s still issues. The main one for me has just been it’s just been Dinosaurs. From 2019 until 2022 there wasn’t many human figures realized at all for the main line. The whole amber collection was a total bust and thankfully got cancelled. Also up till now there was a major lack of Vehicles. now ofc we have the Roland play set, more Jurassic Park Jeeps, some of the Dominion vehicles but for a while as I remember there was nothing. I’m 18 now and I don’t really play with toys anymore and once and a while I do get some of the Mattel offerings if it’s something or interesting or if it’s legacy or HC and still some of it is disappointing like weird head sculpts, another repaint of a old model for example the Sarah Harding set comes with the same stegosaurus since 2018, The Hammond Collection Triceratops being the worse out of that line and like now the mainline giga imo being the one of the worst Mattel has made. There’s also at times the goofy looking dinosaur designs I’ve ever seen with the big eyes and big head that’s weird shaped. Then again it’s the kids who are enjoying these stuff now. From what I got in 2018-2019 I’m happy with. these kids definitely are happy with these toys and with the new creatures they add like 2 weeks ago I saw a kid looking at one of the new Diabloceratops figures that came out. Mattel is still doing good or so but they still are a 70/30 imo with the line.

I bought a Baryonyx in early March of last year before spring break 2018, and I was (to my research) one of the first Americans to have a Baryonyx. When I pressed that button to hear two Trex roars and no Spino/Baryonyx roars, all my praise for it died. The same went for the Trike and Allosaur, which outrageously had this same problem. I was so happy that the Metriacanthosaur had at least two original sounds and although the Ceratosaurus had one Rex sound, the Indoraptor snarl it had was fitting and likeable. Hearing the Thrash and Throw with an Indominus roar made my brain implode with confusion, and made me question if Mattel was run by Hasbro in times of development. I do enjoy some of these figures and I do like the Concavenator and new species introduced through the Dino Rivals line (Wtf is wrong with that Tiny Styracosaurus) but mattel really needs to step up its game. Enough repaints of raptors and Rexes, they need to focus on making playsets like the Command Compound, Mobile Command center and even the raptor attack playset, because one little pathetic lava goop shower won't cut it. Mattel also needs to step up their game with real feel skin and electronics, as rubber isn't even hard to manufacture and a bit of spending towards universal could open a floodgate of dinosaur sound design from Jurassic World Evolution, to which mattel could have recognizable and even customized sounds to each respective species. Removable dino damage pieces instead of the dumb ugly mudflap tumor spots, handpainted details instead of obvious sloppy printed details, and for god sake just add some weight to the feet so they stand! Its one thing to be Hasbro with accurate smaller feet, but its completely different to not only have giant clown feet but to have to use sticky tack to ensure my dinosaurs don't topple over like dominos. Let us hope that Mattels just pulling our leg for right now and that we get our big, rubber with plastic endoskeleton, beautiful film accurate paint detail and movie accurate electronics (and articulation) Brachiosaurus, rather than another giant thin plastic piñata for kids to decimate. Oh god I talked a lot didn't I😁 hope 2019's going good for ya Matt! Love your content dude👌

Hi Matt, I've been a viewer since you first started reviewing hasbro JW toys and it was nice to find someone who saw and spoke reality... and it's good to see you're doing it again. I'm in my late 20's and I'm not really a toy collector but I love JP and still remember the fun I had with those kenner toys so I've kept interest in the new product for the recent JW films and it's been disappointing. I knew it was a matter of time before you'd say something because I had these same thoughts when these toys came out last spring just like I had bad thoughts on 2015 hasbro product when it came out and I saw you posted truth. I bought a lot of the mattel legacy stuff off of hype, brought it home, looked at it and then looked at my kenner stuff and thought...dude, kenner is still better...and I ended up selling all I had bought. Honestly, I'm tired of running around the circle when it comes to JP toys and I've realized one simple truth, just stick with kenner. So now I just have my kenner stuff and I'm satisfied with that. No more worrying about other companies coming up short some how some way. I've realized there will never be another kenner because of 2 reasons. 1) is obviously overall quality/scale/likeness/realism to JP/TLW movie/novel. Not to say kenner product didn't have flaws, but for some strange reason I've come to realize kenner's figures were perfectly imperfect...even though they didn't look EXACTLY like their movie counterparts to the last detail or things like the fishing wire in the red rex breaking and causing that incredibly inaccurate roar to continuously repeat until the batteries were taken out was reality, their imperfections whether by look, feature, or sound are what made them true classic jurassic toys with 'the official mark of Jurassic Park' and 2) no one can replace the nostalgia of kenner or the first 2 movies. Those that were around in the 90's all remember the commercials/promotions/hype of the first 2 movies, which are the best stories by far compared to the latter films 3, 4, & 5, and that day is gone, and it's going to be impossible to top those memories. Even if a company did make higher quality toys that matched or surpassed kenner, it still wouldn't satisfy because it's not the original figure you remember playing with as a kid when that thing meant a lot more to you then. At the end of the day there would be little to no attachment to a new/different figure. Sure it'd be nice to have to display, but it would never replace something you grew up with. My motto, kenner all the way because it's tried, true, and legit. Kenner product satisfies and adorns my shelf and it never gets old appreciating the fun coolness that once was.
@joshuaaguirre95206 жыл бұрын
I think we sadly won’t ever get back to the amazingness and quality that Kenner put out on the shelf’s a couple of decades ago which is really a bummer. You’d think that 25+ years later, the technology to make quality collectibles/toys would be amazing but we’ve really only seen a gradual downfall in quality between then and now. And I think that goes for other non-Jurassic products as well. Because of this, that’s why I’m losing hope that we’ll ever see something set the bar equal to, or even higher than the incredible and brilliantly designed Kenner products from the glory days. I guess time will tell, but as of now, we’re still not seeing as much love and care put into these products as they were given 25 years ago. Great video as always, I love hearing what you have to say on behalf of the people like myself who you inspire and speak for..

As someone who grew up with the original lost world line, I still gotta give it to Mattel. I think they are doing a great job at these figures and the thrash and throw is the greatest Jurassic Park/world toy in my eyes BUT keyword here BUT Mattel needs to slow the hell down and pace themselves before they burn themselves out, biggest issue with them is they're throwing stuff out too fast and in terms of the Tyrannosaurs there's too many all at once. Not usually a bad thing, in fact it's nice that kids would be able to have a variety to choose from, cheap or expensive. The rubber might be more durable but I think people forget how badly the old rubber trexes tore. I see alot of second hand Jurassic figures and the rubber especially the thrasher rex is all ripped. However, I'll admit more fixable than broken plastic. I appreciate everything Mattel has done, but Weather down the line this year. When the next film hits maybe Mattel can make some rubber dinosaurs and take some advice from fans. But I don't think hard plastic should disappear either when, I know this is sacreligious to say but has superior sculpts.
@MATTDALOR1AN6 жыл бұрын
Well, the Thrasher had inferior rubber compared to the tougher bull and even tougher Red Rex. Thrasher was hecka soft; that's why the tears were more frequent. If you look at how soft the JPS2 Utah is to TLW Utah, you'll see that same difference!
@theinkslicer6 жыл бұрын
@@MATTDALOR1AN yeah that sucks, it hurts to hear about the thrashers breaking as well, All I hope is if they do continue with hard plastic or try rubber, Durability with these things should be key, they advertise it for kids but you can tell they're also aiming at adult collecters alot. Hopefully the tweeks in the bite and fight are a sign of better quality control, Don't want them to run into issues like some of Thier wwe lines. I've seen companies doing this with lots of stuff. Hasbro did it with a few different sized and quality Star Wars ships as well. (Particularly Millennium Falcon) They made different sizes for what people could afford or just wanted to pay, not for the intent of people buying all four. I kinda like that method. People who really really love the franchise can buy the higher quality or larger ones. For people who just kinda like it they can buy the smaller ones without any features. That being said, you have a point about those prices. I think they should honestly have a low, mid, and high tier. Low tier, no noise, no effects, just plastic articulated figure. Mid-tier, plastic, but action effects and sounds. Then top tier gets you that rubber outside with the plastic innards. If they play their cards right they could recycle a lot of aspects of the molds between them too. I honestly wouldn't even care if top tier was only available online only. Just as long as it was possible to get it.

They need to do the following: 1) Stop putting the dinosaurs in a walking position, they should be standing neutral. So they won't fall over, and make the tails heavier so they don't have to make the feet big. 2) Make the larger dinos with rubber. 3) Make the plastic dinos with quality plastic, not that shiny brittle crap. 4) Make the rest of the cast, vehicles and playsets from the first three (good) films. I could go on about how Mattel is squandering this line while everyone else praises them. Their Tyrannosaurs are all inaccurate, the body sculpts are pretty bad. Look at the red Rex and the Thrasher and compare them to the Winston maquettes, then compare the body sculpt of the Mattel Rexes to the maquettes. They got the head right, better even than Kenner but the rest of the sculpt is generic crap. The human figures are made out of a soft gummy plastic with only one accessory. This line is quantity over quality. There are some good figures but there's also a lot of cheap inaccurate crap. Tomy would have been better.

Yeah but a lot of these are issues that would lead to more costly production and thus even more expensive products, this is simply a consequence of materials needed for mass production these days unfortunately. Lets also not forget these aren't supposed to be collectors items, they are children's toys first and foremost and should be affordable for kids through allowance or as gifts. They really don't have to appeal to the people who bought toys 30 years earlier. I do certainly agree that we should get a more neutral stance for the dinos, with limited articulation to pose as needed, that should honestly be LESS work than an action pose in the box.

@@ChibiWes101 hey, wes. I was kinda of subtextually hinting at that. OrangeElite2552 They should also give wrist swivle to the human figures!
@OrangeElite6 жыл бұрын
@@אנונימיתאנונימי Yes that's something I forgot to mention. They need to add wrist and ankle articulation. Robert Muldoon can't hold his gun with both hands because you can't get his hands at the right angle where it would be possible, without bending the arms in an awkward position, not to mention the arms won't hold that position for very long. Simple wrist articulation would have fixed that. The 2008 Indiana Jones line has such articulation and each figure came with a ton of accessories compared to these figures. I really wish Mattel would reconsider the amount of money fans of the franchise are willing to pay for higher quality movie accurate figures as well as the other human characters, vehicles and playsets. I hope they reveal the Ford Explorer, the Helicopter, the Mercedes and perhaps a Raptor Pen and Trailer for toy fair 2019. All we've gotten so far is the Matchbox cars. We need full size vehicles for the figures. The one difference between Hasbro and Mattel is I think on some level Mattel cares enough to listen to the fans and in situations where they can will try to meet fan demands. Which is more than anyone can say about Hasbro. So I hold out some hope for Mattel to improve.

I agree with the points in this video. We want higher quality. If that means higher prices, so be it. I think the best Mattel dinosaur figure so far, which isn't actually a dinosaur, is the Mosasaurus. All due to it's size and quality of material, it's rubber! (So glad I could finally snag one after my long hunt. It didn't disappoint:)

Love the arguments you make, I totally agree with most of them, I have both the red rex and the thrash n' throw t rex, and once you put those two next to each other you really see the problems on Mattel's product. The problem that bothers me the most are the proportions, it is very annoying to see that the head of the thrash n' throw is actually bigger that the red rex while being an over all smaller figure. The head and feet are too big and the tail and legs are too short, I still love mine though, but I feel Mattel really needs to up their game, and I feel they are totally capable of doing so

The Thrasher T. rex and the Red rex are still superior to all of the Mattel rexes including the Hammond Collection Rex. Kenner Rexes have sharper teeth, proper underbelly sculpt, no ugly cuts, no large feet, no huge thighs, and no cheap plastic. It makes me wonder if all of the hype on the HC rex is just a honeymoon phase.

We also need a proper Spinosaurus. While I'm happy with the latest version by Mattel after I had to buy a second because the first one can't even stand properly and fell over constantly.. fast forward several months I decided to buy another one hoping maybe it stands better.. while it dose stand better still kinda wish the legs where the same as the newest Dominion release of the T Rex because that stads up with no issues what so ever. Also why can't they paint the claws on the hands of anything other than the dead Amber Collection and the new Hammond collection? I find myself using a black sharpie coloring them in just to make them look better and it dose. If your not good at painting using a thin black sharpie works great if you don't plan on letting a kid play with them.

Also going back to what I was saying about the Spino.. why did mattel still not make another version of it. We only have the one that's actually in scale.. we need more spinos..

I love the T Rex but let’s be real, Mattel made too many Tyrannosaurus figures, there are no other large theropod toys other than T Rex and Spinosaurus (Which you cannot find in any store in the US btw). Why not throw in a Giganotosaurus, or a Carcharodontosaurus? I’ve even seen a large Arcrocanthosaurus toy from Terra the other day that’s obviously a little smaller than the Red Rex, so why couldn’t Mattel do that? It’s cool that we have better looking dinosaurs than what Hasbro could offer but, I’m starting have a big issue over the lack of human figures, vehicles, and play sets. I know people often like to say dinosaurs are the stars of the show but I disagree, humans and vehicles are just as important to have, I shouldn’t have to look into old/recent Gi Joe toys just to get more humans and vehicles.

Nevermind the toys, Jurassic Park as a whole is in a bad situation of bad company decisions! the bad fifth movie, a lackluster video game by developers who cut corners, cheap Mattel toys, and many things wrong actually! I have always hated the Super Colossal line. Sure they look cool, but the Bull Rex could eat figures whole and it's a decent size And so are Mattel's Indominus Rex and the Thrash N Devour T Rex (Which is my second favorite T Rex from them, next to the Hammond Collection one and the Bull/Omega Rex) If I want a huge dinosaur toy, I'll get the Brachiosaurus and Dreadnoughtus. At least they scale with the main line and look awesome Oh and screw you Mattel

I personally thought I was the only one who had these issues with the TnT Rex with the loose springs and difficulty standing (something that a lot of people on almost all the JP toy forums, especially the ones on Facebook, mocked me for even stating it). Personally I strongly disagree with your opinion regarding the Mattel Jurassic world fallen kingdom figures being inferior. Yes there could be some improvements like the Spinosaurus having loose legs. However in comparison to what Hasbro gave us they are a MILLION TIMES BETTER. Despite what you said I do agree with hoping we get some more real feel skin or rubber dinosaur figures. I do thoroughly enjoy your videos and the reason we have better or..well somewhat better products is thanks to you! Also do you plan to review the Indominus rex figure? I heard there might be two Indominus rex figures. One would be the smaller version that is not electronic. The equivalent of the Legacy collection T-rex figure. The other one would be the deluxe version with electronics and that can swallow human figures.

Mattel is very good for Jurassic Park but they do need to improve and change the content of their products I want neutral posing for Dinosaurs because I get tired of the running/battle pose postions they been doing, another they need to improve is their factory engineering because i ran into multiple Dinosaurs with faulty springs whiny springs and even faulty buttons and controls for some of the grab n growl indoraptors and the action attack dinos, Mattel really needs to change the way they package there products I want all my Dinos to have a closed in packaging so the figures don't get damaged while they get shipped to the stores because i seen one grab n growl indoraptor with a broken elbow joint and a trash and throw T-Rex with a broken thrash action feature so Im praying that Mattel watches this video by the master who got us out of Hasbros hands and reads our comments about how we feel about these products🙏👌
