Situated on the banks of the Rupanarayan river in the village of Samta, in the Howrah district of West Bengal, India, is a house museum called Sarat Chandra Kuthi, also called Sarat Smriti Mandir. Notable for housing Bengali novelist Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay for a span of twelve years. Gopal Das, a labourer from the area, built the house in 1923 for ₹17,000 at a cost. The building sustained damage during the West Bengal floods in 1978, and the government repaired it. During his tenure at Sarat Chandra Kuthi, Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay serialised a number of his works, including Devdas, Baikunther Will (Baikuntha's Will), Dena Paona (Debts and Dividends), Datta (Bethroed), and Nishikriti (Deliverance). Additionally, he penned Mahesh and Ramer Sumati.
