The really neat thing about this is that there's separate dialogue if you just assume that the mechanic is evil because of the earlier incident with the gatekeeper. Jock asks why you murdered the mechanic only for JC to say he seemed suspicious. Then Jock discovers the bomb.

I remember when Jock dropped me off in Area 51. I forgot to disable the bomb. He didn't say anything, either. I see the helicoptor fly off, and then... boom. It's moments like that that make you feel like an ass.

I know your commnet is a year old but I wanted to put my experience on it xD, I'm currently playing the game for the first time, and I notice the dead mechanic,and how the other mechanic is acting odd. So I figured, might as well quicksave and kill the guy, he probably did something. And then bam, Jock tells me there is a bomb, and defuses it. Good thing I'm playing cautiously for my first playthrough I guess, just logic lol

+Lorz Ronz Same here - I thought Jock's death was a fixed event you couldn't change. This stayed in my mind when I was playing Deus Ex: HR. When Faridah got shot down, I completely lost my sh*t, and would not proceed any further in the game until I saved her - a sort of "this is *not* happening twice" situation. I'll have to play the original again :-).

There's a lot of stuff like this in the game. For example, if you don't kill Walton Simons during the fight in the underwater base, he will re-appear later at Area 51. Or, when UNATCO turns against you in New York, if you survive the fight in the Ton Motel, you can take the subway back to the Battery Park station, where you'll encounter Anna Navarre. If you survive THAT fight and try to exit the subway, you'll encounter Gunther Herman, who is unbeatable at that point in the game.

I used to go through periods of time where I’d just play this game over and over and over again until I was sick of it and uninstall it. @Naminator5 no atually Jock says they got Smuggler, it was never mention he was dead or if you tell him to be 'suspecious that is when you get jock saying 'he slipped out of New York just before he got raid', something along that line anyway.

@Pkmns first time i played that what happen i though why is the a dead mechanic -- suspeicious -- never thought glitch. But second time i played i was more inquisitive and i went back and found out the mechanic with an American ascent is rogue because Everett said his mechanic was French and had never been to USA. So i went to Jock, found the bomb. Confronted the mechanic and he tried to kill, so i pwned his ass XD. and Jock never died in the last stage. great moments, men iwish it never ended

Yesterday i completed Deus Ex 1 again. Really kewl game, one of the best. Whatever, i tried both variants - investigate that bomb problem or not. So, it may seem strange, but when i didn't warn Jock, nothing bad happened. So i guess this quest is not necessary for game completion.

Endearing voice acting aside, this is still one of my favorite Developer's Foresight moments. Also, that mechanic sure was trash when it comes to body disposal. Really, JC himself, Adam Jensen, Garrett, Agent 47, Sam Fisher, Richard B. Riddick, Corvo Attano, Daud, Emily Kaldwin, Billie Lurk, and other stealth experts would be most displeased.

I also lost Jock the first time I played. Sad but I will never be able to bring myself to making that mistake again :D It is no fun without Paul, without Jock, without Smuggler. These are the "minor" screwups on JC's part. He can lose all his trustees if the player is an imbecile.

I know it's been a year since this comment, but yes, the outcome will depend if you warn Smuggler about the raid or not. If you don't, he's dies during the raid. If you do, he'll get out of there in time before it happens. Although I don't think you get to see him again, Jock let's you know if he made it out of there.
