last month I bought a 2009 Touareg 2 Lux. Cranberry on chrome with tan and black interior... $2950.00 192K on a VR6 with the 6 speed Not one single button is missing or scratched. The exterior is in garaged condition except for some bubbles under the rear driver's quarter, under the D pillar. All maintenance records - dealer performed all scheduled and recommended maintenance. 5K mile oil changes. Timing chains were done at 140K At 100K the water transfer pipe and pump were changed. It's likely due again =/ Passenger side window regulator is broken. Took off the panel and the motor is completely gone. Ordered the regulator and motor. New door harness off ebay for 40.00. Changed one fuse that I found just checking shit out. It's for the heated steering wheel.. LMAO a heated steering wheel? It needs nothing as far as I can tell. I have put almost 5K miles on it already and it's not used a single molecule of oil. HUGE change from my 1liter per 1K mile sack of s#%t FSI Mk5 GLi.

My neighbor has the V10 version of this same generation. He bought it new and uses it exclusively to tow his Ginster Yellow Mk3 VR6 GTI (also owned since new) to the Tail of the Dragon in NC a few times per year. It’s only a 400 mile highway drive so I asked him why he doesn’t just drive the GTI and he told me that it only has 4600 miles 🙃 He daily drives a minty clean V10 S8 and his wife has an SQ8 so it’s not a money thing. So really "yes, but only if you are a VW Audi enthusiast like Paul or Charles" (who loves researching parts and repairing things but also loves VW Audi in particular), otherwise it will be a pain and you'll get fed up with it? Pete from SpeedAcademy got fed up with his and replaced it with a Toyota 4Runner, even though he has the tools, but presumably this is because he is a BMW and Honda enthusiast, and therefore his heart wasn't "in" the TLC needed for the Touareg? 🙂

I’ve had several TDI Golf’s and bought a 2013 TDI Touareg last year. It is so big and fancy. Unfortunately it had a broken timing chain tensioner and has had the engine out for several months while the shop and I search for parts and tools. While the engine was out it’s getting: - head gaskets - valve guides - a new turbo - a fuel pump - exhaust manifolds - new cat - new DPF - injectors - many many coolant leaks fixed Currently waiting for a tool to adjust gear lash on the cam gears. I’ll need to fix some broken rear springs and strut mounts too. More 7P Touareg content please.

In Turkey, cars are overpriced with taxes. We could only afford 2003 XC90 Volvo. We had to do maintenance on injectors(to be safe), suspension etc. It didn't cost much but things will come up and that's the trade-off for buying luxury car with small price. We are 330.000 kilometres and very pleased to go long trips. We got to know a good Volvo workshop too. We even know like old stupid mistakes like engine cap not opening due to small errors etc. But when I go to dinners, my bosses and people are mindblown to see me drive that Volvo XC90 when it's cheapest car there! What is the alternative? We compared 2023 XC90 and our 2003 XC90 side-by-side in workshop, new cars have 100X more stuff to go wrong. (hybrid, eletric unis etc....)

Touaregs are great, my dad still has a 2007 (1st gen facelift) 3.0 TDI V6 with air ride and for the ~10 years we've got it the only problems it's ever had are the sensors for the air ride, which are kind of expensive. But overall it really has been great. Lots of space, comfortable, good for longer trips. As a MK5 Golf driver the "issues" I've got with it is it's a pretty big car for smaller cities, as it's like 2.5 tonnes, which takes a toll on urban economy, and is 4.7+m long etc etc, the 6 speed auto (Tiptronic) changes slowly and the car when stock is pretty slow. With a bit of tuning it really could be something. But as I said, still a very good car and would recommend.

As a euro going for a Diesel in anything weighing more than 2 tons is a given. The V8 TDI is also very tempting on this generation but probably wasnt available in the US. Because when the timing chains need replacing in a full engine- out- service its better to have a V8 in the end. Also brwon metallic cars look so dated, that color was a short trend back in the day and quickly vanished.

Great in-depth look at a used Touareg. Your mechanic's perspective is invaluable. The dieselgate warranty is a double-edged sword. While it covers emissions-related issues, it might exclude other potential problems. Given the off-road history, I'd recommend a thorough undercarriage inspection. Those hidden surprises can be costly. A diesel purge is a smart preventative measure.

Just changed brakes on my wifes 2013 that we bought with 89K miles and it's at 159K. Even with the assumption that the brakes were new when we bought it, 60K miles isn't bad for brakes. The worst failure a modern TDI can have is having the high pressure fuel pump go out. Once it fails, it takes out itself, the other pumps, all fuel injectors, and a majority of the hardlines due to all the metal shrapnel sent through the system. Best thing you can do is use quality diesel, an additive, and possibly replacing the CP4 fuel pump with a CP3. I had it fail on my A3 and the dieselgate warranty covered me. Others might not be so lucky...

The 3.0 liter turbo diesel TDI has a ticking time bomb: The high pressure fuel pump. Being a common rail fuel delivery system, when this pump inevitably craters due to (unavoidable over time) fuel contaminants, it will send metal fragments throughout the entire fuel system (including the tank and pumps via fuel return), and essentially ruin the entire car. My otherwise well-maintained and strong running 2013 Toureg TDI Executive just did this at 120K miles, and had to be sold for scrap. The pump is located at the rear of the engine and is NOT easily replaced for preventative maintenance.
@TheXestenz

ALSO: Watch out for a very common oil leak from the upper oil pan seal on the 3.0L. VW used a robot-applied sealant to this joint -- which could either be misapplied and/or harden and lose elasticity over time, causing an increasingly bad weeping or leak. Only way to repair is to pull the entire engine and reseal from the block up...

I Do Cars channel just did an Audi S series engine teardown, $30K for that job. Daves Auto channel had a similar engine. Stay gold.

So wait, you’re not supposed to buy a car for $10k that needs $10k of work? Huh

These cars are great, until your extended diesel warranty runs out and you have to pay 2k for a NOx sensor. Suddenly these customers don't like their Touareg TDI anymore...

Well color me clueless , i had no clue they offroaded these things ... i look at it as a family suv 😅... hmm guess ya never know 🤔, maybe i will have ti test VW and there off road capabilities.. starting with the jetta tdi 😅.. na but me n my wife just had a rental that was a new vw suv (lil smaller than this one but i forgot the name ). And it was a 4cyl turbo and had the lil +/- slap stick , and plenty room , and was decently peppy tbh for what it was ... anyways love the content and im only in nc so i not to far and can relate on alot throuout the vids .. n terrains and weather ... u and humble are kinda persuading me to get a vw as my next fam car/build 😅 .. i will be a vag commander yet lmfao 😅😂🤣 lol jk but perfect timing 😮😅.. peace and love all, keep it rad, stay safe, and build on.. l8r peeps

That's like buying a used WRX/STI, hooning the crap out of it. Then selling her as a "Gently used, never tracked, grandma driven," Subie.

Didn't see any evidence of off roading at all. Looked like all of my parents vehicles and they live on dirt roads in rural kansas. Mud, yep, grass, yep, rock chips/scratches, yep.. all normal stuff for people who live on dirt roads in rural areas.

A good idea? No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, nooooooooooooooo! Well I mean it's a great idea to people that like having dirt under their fingernails, and that have a VW parts supplier on speed dial.

vw what a piece of thrash ... so many things that can break down , gazillion plastiky parts , and a lot of small parts that cost a fortune ... i don't even want to know how much more the parts and labor costs in the us where these things are foreign . For you as a vw technician it will be smooth sailing but for average user , vw is a money pit . Have a good one
