Hélène Grimaud - Silvestrov: Bagatelle III (Bagatelles I-XIII)

Since 2010 Hélène Grimaud has refrained from recording Mozart. One might almost think there simply hasn’t been room for his music in her multifaceted repertoire, and the pianist does confess that her younger self found the “lightness of being” she associated with his piano works unfulfilling. Now, however, for her latest concept album The Messenger, she has created a pianistic dialogue between Mozart and the Ukrainian-born contemporary composer Valentin Silvestrov.

I know that free arbiter does not exist. No more chance either. Two dialogues with Postscript - Wedding Waltz -. The piece presented itself without my expecting it, in the middle of this immense sea of world music. It's the discovery of a composer of the present time, of a pianist who redraws the work in the colors of her passions. I find there the marvelous, the patience, the sweetness, the energy of the future that awaits us. A message for messages to make the earth sing to the rhythm of a heart in harmony.

So far, 3 Bagatelles in the only piece I have heard from that album, and I like it very much. Hélène Grimaud gives such a contemplative performance of this piece, which was such a nice discovery when I heard it this Sunday morning. That is so nice, I am going to vote for this piece without hearing the others yet.

Silvestrov's rejection of modernism can come close to atavistic simplicity, pop sentimentality, and New Age aesthetics, as it does here. If you like Part, Taverner, and such, this may be your cup of tea. The ever formidable Ms. Grimaud wrings every last drop out of this Bagatelle, as if prophetically to express the entire world's sorrow over the war in Ukraine.

She has always played contemporary composers her Corigliano caught everyone's attention . Silvestrov is almost close to "radio relax pop " There is something here but it aint Ligeti nor is it trying to be . Hear William Bolcolm, CarlVine 's piano music (Pletnev is also a fantastic composer as is Salonen .)
