The melody is familiar. It goes back to a US Civil War tune "Tramp, Tramp, Tramp the Boys are Marching" intended to reassure Union prisoners of the Confederates that the US troops were on the way. It produced a Confederate version, and also became familiar as the Sunday school tune, "Jesus Loves the Little Children of the World." During the Spanish American War it was reworked to "Damn, Damn . damn the Filipinos" and the US Navy revised it in WWII. Alcohol was probably involved in this creativity. Spanish American War: Damn, damn, damn the Filipinos! Cut throat kha-ki-ak ladrones! Underneath our starry flag, Civilize 'em with a Krag, And return us to our own beloved homes.
