Re: how Amos got Peaches into Luna. In the book Amos convinces Avasarala not to search the ship with this line: "If you did go in there, you might feel like you had to do something. And then I might feel like I had to do something. And then we’d all be doing things, and we’d all wind up having a worse day, just in general."

There's a vid on KZbin that breaks down the crazy amount of detail in the final space battle. Bull rolling the ship to make up for low PDC ammo. The backfire from the railgun to offset the projectile momentum. Even Drummer sending her missile volley off as a flanking spread, to achieve maximum distraction on the Koho's PDCs, allowing Holden to come into railgun range. It's an incredible level of devotion to the physics and strategy of how weapons work in this universe.

I'm not trying to defend him, but to my knowledge the results of the independent investigation where never publicly released. Instead he was fired. While it seems most likely that this was the result of the investigation coming to the conclusions that he was guilty of what he was being accused of, in this day and age it can also mean that the Studio just didn't want to deal with that kind of publicity. Just like in Kevin Spacey's case, where he was found NOT guilty in a court of law in the end, but he had lost his job in House of Cards and was completely cut out of a movie in the meantime. So I'm not so sure if Cas can be blamed. Maybe he can be blamed for not reading the writings on the wall and realizing that if you behave a certain way outside of your job, in this day and age this can cost you your job, and that it is best to keep a low profile as long as you are hired on such a production.

"Holden...this is Drummer" as understated as it was, is yet one of my favorite lines of the show. At the dinner party, Bobbie was wearing Earther blue and Avasarala was wearing Martian red. In an earlier episode, Marco was studying a tactical screen which showed two UNN battleships at the Ring. The screen showed an object labeled "Mateo" on an intercept vector with one battleship. Remember Mateo was the Belter who hurled rocks at a Martian patrol...the swarm of meteors was named after him. For those who don't know, both US and Canadian law require companies to handle sexual harassment and abuse cases within their own companies. Sexual harassment itself (at a level short of sexual abuse) is not a criminal offense, but it _is_ a federal offense for the company that fails to deal with it. There are hundreds of such cases a year...Cas Anvar got an independent investigation, which is more than most. And the show has killed off the character, but has not kicked the character to the curb.

Naomi's comment that Avasarala has "come a long way" isn't about her rank in the government. Remember, in the first episode she was hanging belters up on hooks in earth gravity to interrogate them. Now she's working to save belters from Inaros as much as she is to save inners.

Naomi is keeping track of the times in the maintenance area because the only air on that ship is what is in that cabin. Each time she goes through that airlock into the maintenance area the air gets thinner because the air that fills the airlock gets vented.

I don't believe Naomi's goal was ever to get saved, and I don't think she realistically expected it. If you look at her various plans the natural result of many of her potential successes would be that she dies alone out there. She just wanted to stop her loved ones following the signal and getting blown up by the Chetzemoka, and she just happens to live because her only option to fulfil her goal was to go outside and hope she can get the message out before she suffocates
@mitchellforney6109

Yeah, she doesn't jump out of the ship to be saved, she does it so she can sign to the others that the ship is rigged to blow if anyone approaches, using the arm and body signals Belters developed to communicate in spacesuits with shitty radios and across language barriers. (The books explain a lot about how gestures are a vital part of Belter Creole. You see it most plainly in the very first episode of the show when Gia, the sex worker on Ceres, is teaching Belter Creole to Miller's partner Havelock.) In this episode, Naomi is expecting to sacrifice her life to save her friends. It's an unexpected miracle to her that they managed to snag her anyway.

The "long way" Avasarala has come is from being someone who hates anyone not on Earth and a torturer to someone making chit-chat with Martians at a reception (and possibly Belters, I'm not clear on who everyone was there). She's also come a long way from someone who wanted to manipulate things from the shadows to a proper leader. It's kinda sad that there isn't really a good way of adapting a particularly creepy aspect of the disintegration of the ship at the end: as those things are eating through everything, everyone is alive and conscious, though they're unable to move.

I agree that Season and Book 5 were The Expanse at the top of its form. I often think the "Naomi Family Drama" crowd just wishes The Expanse were a different show, one that focused on the fantastical elements of the story rather than the human ones. But to my mind, this story has never been that; I believe that first and foremost it has always been about people, and leaning into that is what makes this season shine. The other thing that I noticed was a loud (but, fortunately, small) subset of people complaining that somehow Season 5 was the season in which The Expanse "went woke." Which I just don't get. In addition to the fact that nobody can really agree on what that term means, I cannot fathom why this season, in particular, got given that label when previous seasons did not. It's not like the show's tone or politics, such as they are, changed a whole lot in Season 5, so I'm dumbfounded as to where that criticism comes from. I guess not everything is for everybody. But I'm with you, Season 5 was excellent.

The main engine(s) that produce the blue plume only produce thust in one direction. The ships use Reaction Control System (RCS) thrusters, and a whole bunch of them all over aship allow fine control of attitude (that is, the orientation of the craft in relation to it's direction of travel). And while it's not always clear in the show, the main thrust plume is hot enough that a couple of the basic rules of firearm safety apply to it - don't point an Epstein drive at *anything* you're unwilling to turn into a boiling cloud of ionised gas; and know your engine and what's behind it, because if you're not careful, you'll turn it into a boiling cloud of ionised gas.

Technically, shows had broken the Emmy ceiling for quite a few years with House of Cards. Science fiction (& fantasy) had also broken the ceiling thanks to a few shows but really resounding with Game of Thrones. However, a science fiction streaming show with low viewership didn’t have the clout to make a mark in the Emmy conversation - despite passionate attempts by regular fans and a few celebrity fans. Damn shame but (not to flaunt another Alcon property) let’s remember that Blade Runner bombed at the box office and had fairly mixed reviews. However, its influence has been felt for decades and it is now regarded as a SF classic. Even while the show was still filming, I always felt it would be the next Babylon 5. Babylon 5 was a show with a tiny budget compared to contemporary things like Star Trek. It bounced around networks and timeslots. And it only had a small yet dedicated fan base. While Babylon 5 had its share of cheese, it also pushed the envelope for Newtonian physics in pop SF, and it had a closed narrative with a pre-determined arc. Many showrunners and writers would go on to cite it as the codec for how to write a novel on television, and it heralded the popularization of that format (as opposed to the network-preferred episodic format which was easier to syndicate). Some properties have that effect, where their quality and influence affect the industry despite having low numbers on first run. Babylon 5, Blade Runner, The Wire, and (by my prediction) The Expanse. If I’m right, that’s pretty good company. (Also, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. But that’s a whole essay in and of itself.)

Orange Is The New Black got nominations too, so Netflix achieved it with literally their first two offerings. For SciFi/Superhero, we hoped Heath Ledger's Joker was the turning point. We hoped Black Panther's Oscar nom was the turning point. We're still waiting, really. Because of RDJ's Oppenheimer noms there's been discussion about the bias against the genre. IIRC, there was a leaked comment from an Academy voter *this year* who said the quiet thing out loud, effectively.

Now that you've finished the PENULTIMATE season, I highly encourage checking out another KZbin video titled "The Expanse: The Best Space Battle Ever? (Detailed Breakdown)". It does a fantastic job of breaking down what the Roci is doing throughout the fight, what's basically luck (circumstance changing to favor them, really) and skill. As Alex pointed out a few seasons ago, Holden must have aced naval warfare, plus in the books they mention that the crew is tiny compared to how many are usually on a ship that size (Bobbi is amazed at how much Alex multi-tasked), so they all cross trained with each other so in a pinch they could take on different roles. Alex, of course, doesn't die in the books. I won't get into that, but the actor parted ways from the show and they had to make it make sense. It changes some things, but all in all they were able to adapt. At the end of Season 4 you're introduced to the 'builders' remnants of technology, and the 'hole' in space is essentially a bullet (in very broad terms) that killed the builders themselves. Or so we can posit. Now, at the end of season 5, we're introduced to the ring entities themselves. These are more books 7-9 stuff, but because they impact humans (via the gates, obviously) they are somewhat relevant. They end up being a really big deal in the future, of course. There are some great scenes coming up in Season 6. At least two of which don't do the books nearly enough justice in terms of their scope and all that, but they're still great to watch nonetheless. And as we can see, Marcos, while not tactically brilliant in terms of warfare, is a great salesman with a ton of charisma and is really good at making every result look like he intended it for some specific objective. By the time people catch on the free navy has too much momentum and pushes us into Season 6.

On the alex thing. I didnt know the situation at the time i watched this when it was new. I was neither confused by it, or thought it was weird. In fact my mind was blown by the realistic nature of it after many seasons mentioning risk of stroke etc... the impact of the death felt heightened by that vs what you would expect with main cast deaths being blaze of glory etc... It reminded me of the buffy episode where her mom dies. Every episode is death yet that very real and common occurence you dont expect in a tv show carrys weight. Considering what i learned later i honestly thought it was brilliantly handled by the shows team. I can seperate the character from the actor and say RIP alex. On the muddy side of things i think people have been canceled for reasons i dont agree with that dont warrant it. I dont know the case here and will never really know, but considering how quietly the actor went away without defending himself. I think this is one of the cases where it wasnt just from knee-jerk public reaction but likely warranted and i am happy the show took action.

In the books it was easier to imagine Belters long and thin, like the Belter on hooks in the first episode. But it's impossible to source that many real life actors with those proportions, so you just have to stretch your imagination a bit for the show. That pun was not intended but I see it now. In my mind's eye, Earthers were comparatively more stocky than Martians and Belters, like how comic book Wolverine is to the rest of the X-Men. So, the thing about Alex (as a character), I feel like most online 'sources' underestimate his age. It's a reasonable assumption that he left the MCRN at 38 (joined at 18, did his 20), then he spent an undefined amount of time trying - and failing - to make his first marriage work, earning a crust flying suborbital; before signing up to fly long haul as a civvie, with the Cant being his latest contract. Now, as far as I'm aware, sources with actual numbers are thin on the ground, but apparently it didn't take him long to realise that he didn't like shorthaul and suborbital. Most call this a year, which is probably fair, and then tag a seemingly random number on as "how long he'd been on the Cant" and finish up with him being like, 41 or 41. Which strikes me as odd, because unlike Holden, he left the Navy with a honorable dicharge - not "other than honorable" or dishonorable. The Cant was the bottom of the barrel; Amos and Naomi worked it because nobody looked hard into their backgrounds, and Holden worked it because a dishonorable discharge can fuck your employment prospects *hard*. And Alex, at 39 or 40, with his military record - at least relatively unstained - has none of that history holding him back. So why is he on a shitbucket like the Cant? The Cant is where people fail downwards to. IMO, Alex is closer to 50 than 40.

I would assume Amos got Aversarala's help, but it would have been easy to leave Clarisa Mao's name out of it as he would also have the plausible reason that he was just protecting his disreputable friends from Baltimore that couldn't pass an ID scan. Them saving the civilians on the island would also engender some goodwill. I do hope that over time that the amount of people that appreciate the series continues to grows so that we eventually get to see the final 3 books adapted, and that circumstances will have advanced enough that they are ready to give a sci-fi show proper accolades.

I read books 1-5 either before or during the show, and then read book six shortly after season six. I waited to read the final three books until the ninth book came out, so I read those some time after the series ended. So, yeah, it was a little strange to see Alex again.

Great reaction! Very emotional as well! I know the actor needed to go but it was heartbreaking losing Alex! R.I.P. to best pilot in the solar system! Naomi's message to Holden was an indirect goodbye to Alex! Looking forward to season six! God I miss my show, I miss my family 😭

I am reading the books now and you are in for a treat. I really like how the show and the books show different things. I am like oh they didn't do any of that show part in the books and they didn't have any of this book part in the show both. The show and the books are both great.

I was so expecting Nerdy to go like "Oh I get it now, I get why there are three more books." during the final scene. :D Too bad you got spoiled the whole thing about Alex's actor, but on the other hand, maybe it's better you knew in advance what it was all about, dunno. ^^

Just to clarify while the show has got some awards and nominations. It has received not a single nomination from the Emmy's. Which isn't really that surprising, and thats not a knock on its quality. When the show was airing, while they managed great things within its budget, TV was already doing some great high dollar massive productions. So the typical type of award that sci-fi shows were known to get (Fx, Sound Fx, Sound Editing, ect) all went to shows that had massive budgets that really delivered (what a much more modest budget show couldn't ever hope to achieve). While they're weren't a ton of streaming shows, there were a bunch of still what is termed peak tv (ie high quality none broadcast productions). On the issue of acting, writing, directing areas that sci-fi generally has had a far harder time in general breaking into, it's really down to three primary reasons, 1. The Expanse was never viewed by the masses. And lets be very clear, its long since passed where you had a few cable shows and the broadcasts that made it far easier to sample the majority of good and great programs by the voters. 2. With the massive increase in quality performers now willing to do long form (yet still far shorter than broadcast shows), you get actors with far greater visibility and marquee status. That gets buzz and notice. 3. And then you have just the general concept of people thinking sci (let alone shows from the Syfy) network could ever be great tv. There is a real bias even to this day, that takes a lot to cut through. its very easy to understand why and how many quality shows or performers get missed every single year.

I'm re-watching the series on Blu-ray, just finished S3, moving on to S4, my only regret is getting interested in the show after S5 in 2020. I'm just wondering why Expanse fans are called "Screamin' Firehawks"? (which I know was a suggested name for the Roci in S1)

I had read the books before watching the show, so I thought I had a good idea of what was going to happen. So when Alex dies like that it was really shocking at first. Then I immediately thought that the actor had to have done something to get fired, and I was right. I watched this season a couple of years after it aired, so I didn't hear about all that stuff in real time. But at least they did the right thing for Alex the character.

Not sure what Emmy nomination list you were looking at, unfortunately the Expanse was never nominated for any Emmys, let alone Best Drama. And it wasn’t because it was a streaming show, it was just the lack of audience. In both 2020 and 2021 (Expanse seasons 4 and 5), 5 of 8 and in 2022 (Expanse season 6) 4 of 8 of the Best Drama nominees were streaming shows.

I will say it again. I think you would REALLY enjoy Babylon 5. 90 of the 110 episodes were written by the same person, the creator. There is a question that is asked in the first 15 minutes of the pilot that is answered directly in the last 5 minutes of the finale.

IMO, season 3 is the best SF season of television, but this one comes close. But if we compare The Expanse books, book 5 is my favorite. I am sure whole Cas Anvar situation contributed to this being less good than it should be. They were forced to cut things, reshoot, digitally remove him (for example, there were production pictures with him on that party on Luna). I am sure this whole situation contributed to cancelation too.

Stargate is a really good series if you havent seen it. though its old school tv with 20+ episode seasons so half the episodes are kinda mid. But overall a great franchise. I just started a series called For All Mankind which has been surprisingly good. Honestly pretty much everything I have watched so far from apple TV has been great. Which feels weird to say as someone whos very anti apple but theres some obvious passion behind their TV production.
