Fair question, sure. But also ignorant to the small % of us that have lost homes and know what the deal is. Most people do not have any other choice, and will live in the construction zone out of necessity. Lots of boomers either retired or were close to, where a paid off home was instrumental to their retirement. Or younger folk, with large mortgages, that cannot take a huge loss, and cannot pay a mortgage and rent simultaneously.

It's gonna be min 3,000 to over 10,000 SF homes on the hillside with slopes and retaining walls! After the fire storm, them soils ain't what it used to be before, they gotta do soil studies. All them burnt foundations can't be reused! You must dig them up and compact the soil again! Shit ain't happening in 5 years! You can kiss the Olympic good bye.

The picture of the home that burned @ 1:14 shows nicely why so many homes were destroyed by this wind driven wildfire. The setback between the homes is not adequate. Ideally the house in the middle should not have been built and the space left open. Even in cities, this limited setback can not be enough under certain condition. In the wildland urban interface (WUI) it will destroy houses. Wind driven flames from the ample fuel of a burning house will generate a huge amount of radiant heat and direct flame exposure that will ignite the next house and so on. It is unconscionable that the building codes allow placing houses so close together in the WUI.
@jacktoy3032
@jacktoy3032 5 күн бұрын
The developer and city planners are in cahoots to squeeze as many houses into an area. There does not appear to have been sufficient setback to create a defensible zone around each house. That has to change. The defensible zone should be what drives the footprint of the house. No combustible material should be allowed as delineation between properties, e.g., no wooden structures/fences. Any future fire insurance coverage should be void if the home owner fails to keep zone 0 around their house free of combustible material and minimal plants in the next zone out that could be used by a fire to reach the house.

The financial incentive to build out to the property line is high…
@Ilaab1995
@Ilaab1995 5 күн бұрын
@@jacktoy3032.. Agreed! Developers and real estate agents only see profit in the short term. They also constitute a large lobby that prevents sensible building standards from being implemented. We know how to build homes that can resist a wildfire. There are foundation and attic vents that prevent embers from penetrating the structure. Triple pane windows with the exterior pane being tempered glass, etc are all available. Insurance companies should work with the legislator to implement better building and land use standards.
@Ilaab1995

@.. As someone with over 15 years of wildfire risk mitigation, I beg to differ. Search (KZbin/ Google) for Jack D. Cohen, PhD to learn about defensible space.

@jacktoy3032
@jacktoy3032 5 күн бұрын
All rebuilding will have to adhere to the stronger building code (already in place) that mandates the use of fire-resistant material and every building needs to have a defensible zone. Every single property owner should familiarize themselves not only with the code but also with material on the Internet about defensible zone and reducing fuel for fires.
