Ever since I played Avernum 3 at like 12 years old, I've absolutely loved the series, to the point that I run a D&D game in my own version of its setting. I think I remember sending money in the mail for a copy of Blades of Avernum, so thanks for all the work you've put into it.

Jeff Vogel, you sir have been a pinnacle of my childhood pc rpg gaming. Blades of Exile, Exile 3 Ruined World, two titles that made my mind imagine and the heavy dialog was so fun. I learned so many new words. Thanks for that and too for remaking them!

i mean he isnt wrong. pretty sure when exile 3 came out ultima 7 was still seen as the best open world rpg at the time as this was before fallout even caame out.

I hate to correct the developer on his own game, but the proper pronunciation of "Avernum" is "Exile". 😁 I may or may not have grown up in the 90s...

I got the Exile 3: Ruined World in 1997, at 12, from a cd that came with a shareware magazine that used to come out in my country, very far away from where Jeff makes his games. I think it was the first issue I ever bought, and the game just sucked me in for literal years, that demo was huge (and I didn't know much English at the time so that made gameplay even longer. With the perusing of a couple of dictionaries always sitting on my desk, the games sure taught me some vocab!). So many things had to coincide for me to fall into the grand pit of Spiderweb Software games and create these fond memories, I consider myself lucky!

Original Avernum 3 is one of my favourite games of all time; played the demo a lot as a child, then played pirated (sorry, was poor kid) without understanding all the concepts, but also bought and replayed all the Avernum games as an adult and thoroughly enjoyed them. I played the remakes of Avernum 1 & 2, and found them far too simplified for my taste. Skill tree was different. Identification was gone. Lots of these little things I'd originally enjoyed. Did see your reply to these comments, and it's 100% acceptable what you say about your experience and taste with games having evolved over the years :) I still love your complex, intricately made older games (they accidentally spoiled other games that lacked such detail for me) and recommend them to anyone who'd listen. Thanks for making my childhood, and probably many others'! Years ago I met a couple of kids online who were trying to build a MMO inspired from Avernum, I don't think they made it far, but it's something I'd absolutely love to see happen. Thanks Jeff!

I love Avernum 5. I played it as a kid, and just last night finished it. Amazin story. Unbelievable. Did you ever want to be a writer, or write a book? I think Avernum 3 is my next Avernum game I will play, it looks great. I bought it alongside Avernum 5 on Steam. Funnily, the time I played Avernum 5 as a kid I got it from a demo disc from a Croatian video game magazine. I scoured the interwebs for a version of the game to pirate. At that time, I didn't have internet so I bothered my friends to find the game and download it and they almost made fun of me for it, but ultimately it didn't come across like that. However they couldn't find the game to pirate so I just had to accept that I will probably never play the full version of the game. I actually tried to modify the game files to remove the golem that appeared at the end of the demo, and I managed to prevent it to appear, but it didn't make it any less of a demo version. I look back on that time as the point when I grok'd software and it determined that I would move in the direction of software engineering. I am working as a enterprise software engineer now, but I want to try making a video game. I bought the bundles middle of this year and I have 160h in Avernum 5. The game is ha-yuge! Can't wait to wrap up work and start with Avernum 3, today!

i have fond memories of me and my brother editing the character sprites in ms paint so that all the swords had blood on them (this seemed AWESOME and COOL when i was much younger, and definitely not slightly silly)

This is so interesting! I’m only halfway through but it’s so weird to hear the intended pronunciations of things like Kriszan, Anaximander, Valorim. I’ve been reading those names my entire life and it’s weird to hear how my interpretation differed from Jeff’s.
