Just with this video, and an hour of practice, the two hands are finally starting to think on their own. I've got about 1 week of experience and I'm kinda all over the place. Can't really figure out what piece or video I should focus on as there's so many.

This basic idea can be doubled simply by changing the hands... meaning - once you learn how to "automate" the left hand to free the right one - simply flip the practice routine around, so you play the "automated" part in the right hand and solo with the left... It takes some work though because the way we number our fingers (1=thumb to 5=pinky) fans from the inside out, whereas the way the keyboard is numbered simply rises in a sequential straight line... its hard to describe, which is why it takes work, but you can sense it when you play.
@williamkidwell1504
@williamkidwell1504 7 жыл бұрын
perhaps the difficulty in flipping the hands is better stated by contemplating what finger *leads* the automated rhythm in one hand vs the other... if the pinky (5) leads with the low note in the bass followed by the octave on the thumb (1), then to automate this in the right hand you'll have to lead with the thumb (1) followed by a rise to the pinky (5) to play the octave... Because the finger numberings are so contrary, it may be better to just identify the lead note and hit it with the opposing finger from hand to hand... anyway... $.02

It's funny because tapping without the piano notes only confused my brain but doing this whilst playing the notes at the same time was easy lol. I've been playing for about ten years but I really want to be much better at piano xD And after actually watching this video I realized that my left and right hands are more independent than I thought lol. I can play more than 4 notes whilst my left hand keeps playing two xD I went one further and kept playing C and G over and over whilst going up and down the scale from C to C. I think I'll do that every day now lol.

I don't see a reason why the it couldn't work the other way around, the left hand plays the interesting passages as the right hand accompanies. Jazz piano is seemingly give and take, however the right hand is playing too much take and it needs to in fact give more so the left hand can share the improvising. I sometimes think of the right and left hands as two people or characters, and I would maybe begin experimenting with dialoguing, i.e., fours between both hands so a greater amount of flow and interest occurs throughout the solo :)

How in the frickin world was I able to do it at my first try? Also, I showed my friend (she's really good at playing the piano) to rotate her right hand's forefinger clockwise and vice versa on her left at the same time. She had a hard time doing it while I was able to easily do it at my first try and yet I can't play with both hands on the piano. She told me it might be because I wasn't used to the places of the keys and a total beginner but I kind of find it strange.

Some of us inherently pick it up easy, some of us not. Simple as that. I was trained as a classical pianist. Super nerd. Lousy dancer. No natural rhythm. It was very hard work for me for a very long time when I was in my late teens. After a few years things really clicked and I was flying and free and also got into drums. We all need to be drummers in some kind of way. Just feel the pulse and work around that pulse.
