Bandit was only 4 years old when he came to me for re-training. He had already been to two natural horsemanship trainers, spending months with each. He was a rescue when his owner adopted him and after both trainers, he was never the same. The last straw was when he exploded under saddle when his owner mounted him, sending her into the emergency room. That's when she did some searching on KZbin and found my videos.
My work is holistic and focuses on the spiritual, emotional, mental and physical aspects of the whole horse and their well-being.
This video is a review of Bandit's first week of round pen work with me. My first session was an assessment and designed to get to know him, get a baseline of information. Assessments are designed to help you read the horse, understand them, so you know how they feel. From there you know what tools needed to help him learn, grow, release and develop.
The purpose of my round pen work is to develop the following in the horse and between us:
- Relationship, bonding
- Connection & conversation
- Trust
- Respect
- Confidence
- My 3 "R's": responsiveness, rhythm, relaxation
- Joining in mind, body & soul

I like how you showed confidence to the horse and accompanied its mind and thoughts through the process, but the horses in the wild are different, though not so much. Domesticated horses' personality, everything negative was because how we acted. They're not the quiet ones. But wild horses, the ones that survived are not quiet either. Survival doesn't matter with the "quietness", it's a desire of life. Very good training!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please add round penning technique to these videos so that they show up in searches! These are so helpful in terms of horse personality and the needed human learning for different horse personalities-- how would I recognize the tightness of a horse mouth compared with relaxed? (I need close ups). Some of this is intuitive (and you have great intuition--and much experience-- but some of us have to learn). Some of it is so different from human expression of tension, fear, lack of confidence, resistance, disconnection, dominance, laziness, triggers, etc. Which of your videos will help most for comparison of confidence vs lack, resistance vs fear, etc? How much of horse management is relationship, how much is getting physical work out of these 4 legged teachers? Your work in this video seems very focused on the quality of the relationship (reading the level of his tension, addressing trust issues, interpreting what kind of learner he seems to be from his previous experience). I want a solid horse for solo trips far into backcountry off trail. I want a close and confident relationship. I am confident out there alone, but getting too old to walk as far as I would like . . . You are amazing. Thank you. I've watched many, many, many videos (including many of yours) and this is the most clear of all of them. How would I recognize a horse with good emotional agility and which of your DVDs would teach me to recognise this (knowing that the least reactive may not have the greatest emotional agilityl) Thank you

Absolutely love watching you work, I recently adopted a horse whose biggest "vice" was coming in pasture/being caught. He is Very fearful but with me he trusts enough to greet me and allow me to remove and put on his halter. When he gets scared he does lean into me for reassurance. If I'm present he's more ok to allow others close but is still Very skiddish and unsure. What are some ways I can help (I don't want to be a crutch for him) and build his confidence?

Caroline, I appreciate your videos greatly. Your commentary as you ho along is so valuable to me. Do you have a video of your very beginning work with Bandit prior to this video? I'm starting anew with one of my horses who is so very similar emotionally to Bandit. I realize that I need to back up and help him with his fear and lack of trust.

Hi Caroline! This is about where I am with Jupiter..I think. Around 14:28 Bandit looks in towards you. You don't see it because you're facing away. If you did see it right there, do you think it would have been a good choice to allow him to come in for comfort, or doesn't it matter too much as he "needed" to go through that pushed uncomfortable spot in order to come through the other side. He's basically solid, so you are pushing him a bit here in order to get closer to a breakthrough? You are so very calm in this video. I'm going to try that! Cheers for now, Rebecca

Hi Rebecca! This video is a great guide and will help you and Jupe when you get stuck and have questions. It has so many problem solving strategies for anyone practicing my method of round pen, liberty, free lunging. In regards to frame 14:28 and Bandit looking into me, asking a question, had a seen it I still would not have asked him in. Why? Because he was looking for security with me and he needs to find it away from me, during the work. Had I let him in he would continue to want to come in every time he felt insecure and each time I would keep him out he would continue to feel vulnerable and we would keep repeating this. That's where you all get stuck and understandably so. See, he has to make the break through where he feels safe and comfortable out there, in the work, not just with me. Now, there are always exceptions and if your horse panics way too often, too much, I will allow them to ask and come in. I will work with that threshold until I can wean them off and help them build autonomy in the work. Bandit's responsiveness and reaction isn't that extreme, so I push a little more to help him develop. In the long run it takes experience, trial and error, feel and timing to know "where to be, when and why." Keep practicing and remember that there are no mistakes, only learning opportunities! Hugs!

Hi Wi Gu and Welcome! I don't give treats when I am working with horses. The hand gesture is a called a "horseman's handshake" and was designed to mimic the way horses greet one another, nose-to-nose. A horse will only sniff another horse's nose (or your hand) if they accept you. Once they accept you they allow you into their space. In regards to treats, my horses receive treats all the time and never during training. My method is about the rewards and fulfillment of the relationship and you becoming the best treat! At 22:00, I am not sure what you say is accurate. The quiet horses who were not so aware, were the horses that got eaten. The spooky horses were more aware and better able to recognize and flee from predators. I think that is why a lot of horses are spooky because they are the evolutionary survivors. Other than that, I loved the video....

You haven't got what she was meaning exactly... a grounded horse is still 'aware' but not 'anxious and visible' to preditors... as a 'hyped up and unconfident horse'... maybe watch the entire video again, listen properly... and get the 'whole videos meaning' not just take one sentence out of context ? Just saying... :-)

I am interested in the ears - my 9 month old filly, who was weaned at 7 months, came to me at 8 months and is now 9 months old, pins her ears at me. When I lead her she drags and pins her ears....when i ask her to back up she pins them and tosses her head (although she does actually back up) how DO you stop them pinning ears (short of taping them up haha!!;) )
@sarahk1965
@sarahk1965 6 жыл бұрын
kris matthwill , Pinning ears is a sign of anger or frustration. Are you sure your horse is actually pinning her ears, not just swiveling back? An in confident, wary horse will often have her head up, and will back up, and have her ears back without pinning them flat against her head. A horse who is insecure will have her head up and will be moving stiffly and jittery, spooking at the slightest things. An angry horse trying to be dominant will have her ears flat against her head, will have her head up but not at an uncomfortable angle; nose pointing at you, body rigid and demanding, using all her mentality and body language to get you to move. If she lags when you lead her, it will either be boredom, or fear/wariness. If boredom, try changing up the routine, making what ever you're doing very rewarding. Be outgoing and enthusiastic; your horse will pick up on that. If fear is the problem, make sure that you're always calm, and never correct her physically; hitting her or yanking her head. Build trust using no tools. Just go out to a small pasture, take off her halter, and hangout with her. You can work on small things like yielding; just don't be very demanding. Do this a lot, until you guys know each other's personalitys really well. And, she is very young and will go into life threatening mode very quickly if something happens. And when a young filly goes into life-threatening mode, she will act instinctively and possibly dangerously. Safety first. And lastly, she will remember all the good and bad experiences that happen now for the rest of her life. So make a lot of good experiences! Let me know if any of that made sense!

Hi Sarah and Welcome! Young, untainted horses can complete my 3 month foundation training program - please see my website for details as far as what it included www.riderhorsemanship.com/rh-training-program. Horses that have trauma - which shows up in negative behaviors, learned patterns and habits that they have developed to cope or because they could, take longer. The horse Bandit in this video was only 4 when he came to us. I was his 3rd trainer with both previous trainers using natural horsemanship techniques. Both trainers were able to manage Bandit but not re-pattern him. That takes time and skill in this area, knowing what to do. He ended up putting his owner in the ER which is when she found me online.

I need to have my horses trust, yesterday me and my mom put the saddle in her and we were going to let her out of the pen and walk her around my apple orchard, she was acting crazy (it was night so that explains) so we just put her back in..I ride her and she was still acting crazy.. So I was annoyed and I got off her and gave her a mean look, my mom starts yelling at me because she put her head down and looked sad, I tried to tell her that she did good but I was so annoyed.. Later on I came outside with my mom and held a treat out, it toke her a minute to come to me..... :( I'm gonna try giving her treats and brush her.. Tbh I'm still a little annoyed but I just woke up so I'll try my best to change my mood somehow but I feel a mixture of annoyed and sadness. So please help......ughghhghghghghghghgh

It's just mumbo jumbo beliefs, can be broken down very scientifically. Animals (horses in this case) communicate very differently from us, learning how to speak to them is key. Little things that we wouldn't normally notice, horses pick up on very easy. It's why just changing thoughts in our head can be perceived by the horse, because our body reacts to that thought change. The connection between horse and person is very big, but the whole chakra and third eye thing is just bonkers lol.

So my horse when I met her she instantly began dropping her head to me, does she trust me or is she just submissive? We have built alot of trust but I don't want her to feel submissive.

Hi May and Welcome! That's great! There's nothing wrong with a big and powerful horse to show submissiveness while trusting you. It's an honor. Thank her for it and be grateful!

Phillip means as I'm sure you know "lover of horses" You are as I'm discovering not one of those touchy, meditation, types. Pissy? You're the first I've seen that really relates human, horse relationships. Why do men and women feel that horses serve us? We should preserve and protect them. Sister vet, me doc, riding in the blood. except I have about 10 min time on a horse.

You certainly know lots of stuff and I have learned lots from your videos but, I would enjoy it more if you did not cluck so much.

Hi Bonnie and Welcome! Great to hear how well my videos resonate with you and how much you've learned! I would appreciate it if you, and all of the viewers, would be a bit more mindful of what you are saying when you make comments on social media sites. What happened to tolerance, respect, integrity and virtue? I could have easily dismissed your comment and I feel compelled, just as you, to speak out and give my opinion. Difference with my opinion is it is objective and based on fact and experience not emotions and feelings. When you make comments like "I would enjoy it more if you did not cluck so much" what do you hope to accomplish? Seriously think about this. Were you asking a question or pointing out something you don't like, something that irritates you? As a professional, when I see another professional teaching or doing something I don't agree with or like, I don't go on their social media pages and criticize them, tell them how wrong I think they are or berate them because they are doing something I don't like or understand. And I bring up the word "professional" as a point because honestly, if your not a professional who has a lifetime of experience in this occupation your opinion is worthless. It's an opinion and that's all - what's it based on anyway? How you feel about something or how what I am doing matters? In the end, I'm sorry you don't understand the purpose of my clucking, you've totally missed the point. My clucking is so beneficial to the rehabilitation process and helping horses stay tuned in, checked in and engaged. It is a tremendous tool to use if used correctly and with clear intention and purpose. Thanks again and I hope you will think twice next time you decide to make a shallow opinion again.

Caroline Rider you cluck so much...too much. You seem to be desensitizing that horse to your clucking. Sure eventually he figures out what it is you want..but your clucking means nothing eventually. Just think about it before you fly off the handly like you did with that poor guy up there.
