The red kumkum depicts female energy. The flowers, the meethi jilebis , the fire held by tthe men, the peice of red cloth, the matted hair of the sadhu... also depicts ganga who resides on shivas head. Without casting any female, they directly potrayed all forms of devi...as naive as flowers to as fiery as the fire, from as simple as kumkum to as complex as shivas matted hair....its a wonderful composition altogether !

Why are no women being shown? My interpretation of what the artist has done? Devi is shakti or the divine feminine (not just sexually but as a force) that is often symbolized in different forms accompanying the different forms of the divine masculine (again, not just sexually but as the source without attribute or form, pure consciousness, god if you will) like Brahma and saraswati , or Vishnu and Lakshmi, Shiva and parvati. One cannot be separated from the other and this manifests on all levels of existence both perceived and likely imperceptible (nothing exists without both) Now another expression of Devi or the feminine energy is that-in our Hindu sciences,Devi/ shakti or the feminine energy is all of manifestation (in Christian belief for example Devi would be the word of god) and her masculine counterpart is universal consciousness or god in whose awareness she manifests. This too is reflected on all levels of creation if you were to look at it- for instance, the you beyond all the labels and form is your consciousness (masculine equivalent) and the thoughts and plays of your mind, your desires, your body, your memories and senses is Devi / shakti forever creating and manifesting, never seperate. Here in the video all the men and boys symbolize the masculine symbol of witnessing resting awareness/ consciousness that is in worship of all that it is witnessing/ the manifestations/ Devi/ shakti -in the music, in the colours, the day to day life in and around the temples and market places, in the rituals, in the celebrations and desires etc. This brought tears to my eyes the first few times I watched it after realizing how beautiful this depiction is in meaning.
