I have the misfortune of liking genres that are hard, and of not being good at video games. Double whammy.

I just love your channel my friend. I’m currently rewatching many of your reviews. Too bad I can only give the thumbs up only once! ;)

I have been waiting for 4 years to play this game and I have been rewarded. Heard Devil Engine: Complete Edition will be released on switch, PS4 & PS5, and Xbox soon, with a physical release no less. Yay!

Incredible game, but this whole debacle with the publisher Dangen essentially stealing the property from its maker and withholding their pay means that nobody should buy it. The dev even supports pirating it instead. Hell, they finished a quite massive DLC for the game quite a while ago that will likely never see the light of day because of this crap. I wish the larger gaming media outlets would use their considerable influence to report on genuinely important industry level issues like this instead of being nothing more than a mouthpiece for publishers to promote products with. EDIT: Sorry for this whole tangent, but I think it's important to point this situation out wherever possible, so that nobody unknowingly supports Dangen.

Totally agree. I think this review came out before that situation had come to light - certainly I wasn't aware of it. I try to bring it up on Twitter whenever Dangen start swanning around acting like they've done nothing wrong. I really hope it all gets resolved and the actual developer can retake control of their own creation. Hopefully, if that does happen, we'll see both the DLC and a physical release, because based purely on its quality, this is a game that absolutely deserves to be noticed.

@@ShmupsOnSwitch Yeah, I try to remind both Dangen and their audience of this whenever I can, too. They still keep trying to sweep this under the rug, too. Deleting comments, blocking people, the whole shebang. And no worries, I'm sure you would have brought it up in the review as well, had it already happened/had you been aware of it at the time!

Well as of this week (week of Jan 17/21), Devil Engine is legally back in the hands of the game's developer, Protoculture games. My own guess here that this was probably due to a heavy concession by Protoculture, as the official statement made regarding the legal "common ground" reached between the two companies lists that: "Upon extensive review, Protoculture's own legal counsel has concluded that Dangen's contracts, payments, and sales reports have been reasonable, fair, and carried out in good faith throughout the publishing partnership". Alongside this question-raising statement, new troubles have supposedly arisen between the artist and composer and Protoculture's lead developer.

@@Weedwof Oh boy. I mean, the guy behind Protoculture has never been exactly... nuanced in how he communicates, so I can see them being somewhat difficult to work with, but the allegations against Dangen go way beyond just them and include other devs (like that of Fight Knight, for example) and several people that used to work with them in the past, so this settlement is definitely disheartening. Not surprising and ultimately probably the only feasible way forward for Protoculture, but disheartening nonetheless. I wish exploitation like this wasn't so borderline impossible to push back against. Finance based legality just never sits right with me. In any case, I am very glad to hear that the IP is back where it belongs, any possible future issues notwithstanding. Thank you for the update, I hadn't checked in a while.

@@HansAlRachid Yep, although this is a far cry away from a 'David slays Goliath' victory, it's about as good of an outcome that could be imagined, given the drama. The ball's back in Protoculture's court to pull themselves back into working order (which may be a steep request, given the circumstances) and mend these new rifts forming between employees, because, legally, they will be unable to further point fingers at Dangen given this official statement. Wishing them the best and supporting DE and DE:Ignition is all that can be done now.

Really liked this one. Would like to add that Devil Engine is a love letter to the classics of the past. I can recognize stage 2 being an homage to Last Resort and stage 4 to Thunderforce IV. The only real problem I found in this game is that it can't read the up and down commands of the analog stick. It is ok of you use the d-pad but if you like to use an arcade stick, you simply can't go up and down. I mailed the dev about the issue and he answered a patch was on the way, but the last time I checked the problem was still there.

I thought it was a recent game, but it turned out to be an old one! I was told that the Japanese version would be released around November 2023, so I pre-ordered it! That seems fun!😊

6:36 Cancelling bullets can keep the multiplier up and even increase it (I guess depending on the number of bullets cancelled). That's my major gripe with the game, saw a WR constantly abusing this mechanic making dodging redundant (to an extent). Don't know if I'll pick it up when the publisher/dev problems come to an end

The second ship actually makes the game the game totally different to play, and I think the new mechanics (more like daifukkatsu and crimson) makes the game even better. Can’t remember if you mentioned this in the review or not, but it’s definitely worth mentioning in the comments section. I don’t know if they added the new ship later or it was one of the unlockables. I decided to play the game togay again after a long time and noticed a new ship.

Top 3 for me so far: Ikaruga, Tengai & Rolling Gunner. Danmaku Unlimited 3 seems also great but haven't played it enough yet Should probably start with Ikaruga, fantastic game I played for more than 30 hours

The controversy behind this game is a fuckin mess. Im not sure if i will buy this game, Cause once its settled. The game may be subject to change and it wont be the same. All they have to do is patch in the differences. Thats art and its kick ass music. Both are subject to change. I dont know who is right or wrong in this situation. There are too many assholes running around these days and i dont want to support them....
