Devil May Cry 5 - Who is Gilver - A DMC Vol 1 Synopsis

Since the last video on Nell Goldstein got a positive reception i decided to make a short synopsis video on the character Gilver.
The video covers who he is , why he is important , what he does in DMC vol 1 and why he may tie into DMC5.
I also take the liberty of explaining a few key events that occur is DMC vol 1 as not doing so would make things both confusing and complicated.
Let me know what you think of the video and if you would like me to make more content about the DMC sidecontent.
Heres a quick synopsis of DMC vol 1 if you are interested :
Tony is a rough-and-tumble jack-of-all-trades with a haunted past. His encounter with Gilver, a mysterious swordsman swathed in bandages, changes his life dramatically for the worse. Tony is thrust into the dark underworld of an unsolvable case, separated from his partner and his loved ones, and pushed over the edge of desperation. Who's forcing him into a corner? What do they hope to achieve? The world of this first in a series of exciting novels connects to the thrilling smash-hit game, Devil May Cry.

(From DevilMayCry Wiki): In the novel, Gilver was originally revealed to be a disguised Vergil, but his fate, goals and behavior contradict the established canon of the games(especially after the release of Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening). Capcom later retconned the revelation of Gilver's identity by revealing that he was instead a prototype Angelo clone created by Mundus to eliminate the Sparda brothers and that his skills were based on the battle data of Vergil and Dante.

I'd love a remake of the very first devil may cry game. Like a 20th anniversary remake in 2021. with the following features 1. Update the combat and gameplay) to the level of DMC 5 (with some improvements) 2. Rerecord the music as the music was pretty awesome back then, maybe add lyrics like the games after 3 4 DmC and 5(which we havent seen yet) 3. Rewrite the story so it fits with the mainstream cannon, like the anime, DMC3, DMC4 DMC5 (what ever that may be) use elements of the novel (like Nell, Enzo, Grue, Gilver) 4. Rewrite some of the dialague. Keep the ideas of the dialogue, but change it up abit. 5. Bring in the main voice cast to reprise their roles of TRish and Dante, but higher new voice actors for Mundus, Phantom, Nelo Angelo, Griffan, Sparda) For Munduss we need deep, bellowing evil godlike voice. Higher any voice actor who voiced Shao Khan or Darkseid (Frank Welker, Michael Ironside, Kevin Michael Richardson, David Sobolev) For Nelo Angelo: I know that Dan Southworth is Vergil, but for under that armor, for some reason I picture Christopher Sabat (Gharland of Final Fantasy, Vegeta of DBZ) or Kyle herbert For some reason I see Jamison PRice as Phantom (Heihachi Tekken Blood Vengence) with Steve Blum as Griffan. As For Sparda, I see Crispin Freeman voice his attacks as well as any dialogue (unlike previous games where you play as Virgil you get 2 cutscenes, I'd give Sparda plenty of cutscenes to illustrate his relatonships with previous allies/bosses) doubt this stuff will happen, but a man can dream

Gilver is the name virgil's took when he was on the run as a kid. Like dante is tony Redgrave Tony is a nickname for Anthony/Alighieri. The author of the divine comedy / dante's inferno which the theme of the game after they scraped the resident evil spin off idea

Since nico in the trailer confirmed herself that her grandmother was Nell, she probably knows how she died, and if Gilver is cannon she might blame Vergil for it even though he was under mundus’ control, very interesting stuff!

This is rather against even a corrupted vergils personality though. Dante even states in game that nelo angelo is an honorable guy.

This novel book and DMC3 are both just little bit complicated for canon story ‼ because this book is before DMC1 storyline❗ And DMC3 is before DMC1 too❗ This book is just for side story of DMC1 like parallel world, and that time CAPCOM didn't thought to make DMC series❗ but some details is canon from this book ‼

Tony Redgrave and Gilver. Sometime Before the events of DMC3. Dante didn’t have the force edge till after that game but he had Ebony and Ivory during DMC3. Ima go ahead and assume.....the rebellion became the cannon rather then the force edge and Neil was killed off. Giving Dante the idea of making his devil hunting an official business. He was fun and games during DMC3 but he wasn’t ALWAYS toying around. Also his hate for Gilver (Virgil) would further justify the death of his close friends. Also Gilvers bandages can also mean he has a slow recovery from the fire witch killed his mother too. Motivated to find his twin and hell bent with power and hate of being forgotten and lost. After DMC3 he became Nelo Angelo as Mundus’s devil slave. Dante has thought to have killed him for the last time. Not knowing he was freed and more bent out of shape to not only regain power but to enhance it. Searching for Yamato. Nero has it....it’s 2020 and I’m sure y’all know the rest lol

Gilver was going to be Vergil in disguise but they changed him to being a replica of Vergil and Dante because Mundus analyzed their fighting abilities as well as their personalities and because Mundus and his followers hate Sparda for betraying them for humanity he made a replica of Vergil's amulet to further mentally chip away at Dante's heart and their were two Nelo Angelo's Vergil and Gilver of course Gilver being a prototype while Vergil is the real thing

Gilver: Nelo Angelo devil trigger/shotgun as a projectile weapon/Katana that doesn’t resemble the Yamato otherwise it would be too obvious for Dante that Gilver is his older brother/martial arts im gonna assume Mundus modified Vergil’s and Dante's DNA to have his own style or Gilver knows em all, if we add all this up Gilver could be his own character like he should’ve for dark knight Vergil in dmc3 and 4 then the Nelo Angelo devil trigger would make sense and a shotgun to replace the phantom blades/summoning swords.

Dante55ful If the entire novel is canon then yes. However at the moment all that is canon is the existence of Nell and her child. We'll just have to wait until gamescom to find out what else is canon and what isnt.

Doesn't make much sense man because at the end of Devil May Cry 3 Dante decides to open up Devil May Cry as a business not just that at the end of DMC3 Dante ended up learning that he's gonna have to mature a little & realize that shit can get real & that he has to get the job done for the sake of the human race though.

Considering the book is the origin story kamiya had in mind and DMC3 is itsunos idea for an origin story there are bound to be discrepancies. The real challenge capcom has on their hands is trying to make it all fit together coherently if they can. If not then they just have to pick and choose.

I don't see why the novel and DMC3 can't coexist. I just finished the novel, I'm thinking dmc3 took place before the epilogue in the novel. I seriously doubt capcom would just want to ditch the events of the novel

STT SuperTTroll Nell is canon , but when she made e&i and how she died arent canon atm. We need to wait and see what capcom decide to keep and what they decide to change from the book.

Ridley Reyes Because Kamiyas DMC is different to itsunos DMC. Kamiya clearly wanted to take DMC in a different direction than itsuno but never got the chance to with itsuno taking the helm. When i say enzo exists in the dmc universe i mean he exists in the one kamiya was trying to build. You'll notice DMC2-4 make no mention of enzo yet DMC1 had him listed as a character right in the games physical booklet.

Gilver may not be canon, as the novels anime and mangas are semi canon. The only thing 100% Canon is the Games.

Devil_must_die 24 Which is why i didnt state the book was fully canon. Had Kamiya been kept on as director he likely would have taken the series down that path. If i remember correctly dante and enzo are seen in bayonettas official art book if you want solid confirmation of kamiyas 'DMC x Bayo universe'
