Until this visit, I didn't know much about the Devil's Tower in Wyoming. I think this structure is more famous from the movie 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' than for the incredible history it has on it's own right. The tribal history is fascinating as is how the geologic structure came into being. Join me on this hike around the base of the Devil's Tower to how the Devil's Tower was formed and got it's name.

This channel is about all things trikes and RV travel. I have been riding a recumbent trike since 2005 and have been touring since 2007 all over the world. I have toured on 6 continents, in over 20 countries and cycled more than 75,000 miles. In 2020, I shifted from solo trike touring to solo RV travel. I am looking for primo places to ride my trike in the USA while exploring this magnificent country.
On this channel I have gear reviews, tips and tutorials but, mostly, I produce short travelogue type videos of my tours as I go. I travel with a GoPro Hero 10, Insta360 One X2, Skydio 2 drone, Panasonic GH6 and an iphone. Thanks for subscribing and following along!

I had to watch this video Sylvia for two reasons: 1) I have watched the "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" movie many times over the years, and am fascinated by the formation, and 2) I have not visited this national monument yet, so was curious to learn more about it. I was surprised to see that the National Park Service allows visitors to tie cloth to trees within the park boundaries. Maybe it's different than a national park, but in national parks, visitors are not allowed to change the landscape in any way. Perhaps the rules and regulations are not so strict in a national monument, I don't know. I would love to hike all those trails there ... hmm, maybe it's time to plan a trip! steve

The prayer flags are not left by visitors but local native American tribe as protection. I doubt visitors are allowed to leave cloth. This park is well worth a visit.

I go through there every year in June. Belle Fourche is at the eastern end of the Warrior Way that goes through the reservation. The western end is at the Custer Battleground near Hardin Montana. It’s popular with trucks as it saves a couple hours versus staying on I-90 the whole way. I love the whole area of eastern Montana and northern Wyoming and the Black Hills in South Dakota. The Mickelson Trail is fun to ride although very hilly and with great views in places.

Yes, spiritual is a good word for the Devil's Tower and so different than what you would expect if the movie 'Close Encounters' is all you knew about it.

The tower is 5112 feet above sea level. Not 500 feet just thought that you might want to know. If it was 800feet tall and the elevation was 512’ that would mean Wyoming would be below sea level.

Vouz nes parles France, Madame? Belle means beautiful(also from the French) and Fourche means fork. It is naming a particularly lovely spot in the river where it forks. No doubt harkening back to the French discovery of the Louisiana(land of Louie) Territory later purchased by the US from France. Maybe a little more difficult to figure out than remembering that the Tower was the setting of Richard Dreyfus movie called Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Best regards. Vélez RD TSgt USAF/SF Ret

Yes, I was surprised how differently the pronunciation is from the obvious French spelling.
@rafaelvelez1253
@rafaelvelez1253 Жыл бұрын
@@TravelsByTrike Sad to say the pronunciation is not just different but wrong. It speaks of the cultural tone deaf ignorance of the American population to the multicultural origins of the America we live in. That is precisely what channels like yours is meant to dispel, bringing the culture of travel to new ,unusual and interesting places. But like travel anywhere if you do not understand where you are at, it really means nothing but the uhs and ahs of admiration for the local scenery. Keep on trucking, tricking, hiking, traveling!

@@rafaelvelez1253 "Cultural tone-deaf ignorance of the American population." Seriously, Rafael? Images of WW1 & WW2 US Soldier graveyards just 'shot' through my mind (yeah.., pun intended). Sylvia routinely recognizes that more details exist than can be expressed on her Recumbent Touring Videos! Keep up the making of your most enjoyable videos, Sylvia!
@rafaelvelez1253

@@garyseckel295 Well Gary, how very World War-esque of you. You are talking to a 65 year old military retiree of 25 years of service with extended overseas service in Europe and the Middle East. So, yeah, cultural tone deafness to say the least. Like many of my servicemen compatriots that deemed themselves better than those whose country they were serving on while whining about missing their local food chains and American television soaps while being in the middle of the European origin of their ancestors and would not bother to learn about the place they served on, your single focus is appalling. There is a lot more to life, living it and enjoying it than just being there. You more than most should know that with the surname Seckel. German descent of Central European lines could come from Germany, Austria, Switzerland or even France. A lot of history there and here in any of many German enclaves in the US like New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois or even Canada. But I do not get the direction of your apparent negative to my comment. That the pronunciation Sylvia was given by those she asked was void of the correct pronunciation of the original French thus masking the historical significance of the name of the place she was showing to us is to me evidence of the tone deafness I speak of. Not on her that for the first time comes to it but of those that deny it’s origins and significance. Evidently you disagree but that is all. Why the morbid attribution of death and worldly conflict to a name of foreign language origins that speaks of beauty and appreciation of natures wonder? Please explain.
