Devils acquire Jacob Markstrom from Flames

The New Jersey Devils went out and got their goalie. Bill Pidto and Cory Schneider take a look at what Jacob Markstrom will be bringing to the Garden State.

Cory, on the contrary, this is the exact right move to make when you have two very talented, but young, goalies in the system. They can now focus on development in the minors where the belong instead of being put in unfair situations. Jacob has a chance to go deep in the playoffs and dare I say win a cup before hanging up his equipment. I believe this is the best move for both.

Markstrom's age is a small concern but for a 34 year old, he hasnt played a ton of games. 485 in his career, most as a backup. In comparison, Bobrovsky is 35 and has played 200 more games in his career. IDK if that means that Markstrom cant handle a full workload, but the few times he's had a solid team in front of him, he's been a big reason why that team has been good. Either way it was a move the Devils needed to make and prob should've made at the deadline last year if Calgary wasnt holding out for more value. All that time wasted and they probably didnt get anything more than they would have in March

Kinda neat that Cory is the one commenting on this, seeing as he was the goalie the Devs traded for the last time they tried this stunt a decade ago. And he is exactly right here: two years of Marky at a reasonable cap will stabilize that back end for them, and buy a bit of time to figure out their long-term plans. Personally, I don’t the think the jury is out on Daws and Schmid just yet, and Marky might just be the right guy to serve as a mentor. No GM in their right mind would part with what it would cost for either Saros or Ullmark. Which is to say, I highly doubt they are even available .

without Dougie Hamilton and a healthy Jack Hughes? clearly the team needed some rest and now they have a #10 overall pick in the draft that they can either pickup a solid prospect with or trade for a nice defenseman or a top 6 forward
