The way you articulated how accepting the calmness is the same as accepting your ego as an illusion and that conflict being a source of ultimate panic resonates so strongly. There's an alluring comfort to be had in succumbing to attachment, and if you've had profound existential despair in the past and attachment has been a vital tool in "grounding" yourself, then it's a real leap of faith to let it drop. It's less daunting to be confronted with "everything's gone to shit" than the distinct possibility (to the point of seeming near certainty) that nothing fundamentally matters in the first place. That's also why Alien has a much more frightening energy than City

Ki to me was the key of Devins door of musicality. It answered everything in a spiritual sense. He put in basically everything genre-wise but in a very subtle and quiet way. When I listened to it the 10th time or so I thought: "aha, so this is how Devins all music works." Keep going man.

Due to seemingly permanent health issues the "great" 2020 started for me months before actual 2020 lockdown. I'm well yet changed, still dealing with the changes where I realised that I must simplify my life, letting many things go - except for music and playing. The last truly great moment of the era passed was Empath live show I had the luck to visit. I'm 40+ and I've been an active musician myself since 1990 or so but I've never seen or heard anything like that, in a good mean. After that show, digging deeper into your music definitely helped me to stay sane during crashing into the concrete. These brewtally honest podcasts compliment the experience. I gained a lot of faith, hope and desire for planning during circumstances that made planning just like flat-out ridiculous. Still, I'm trying to find my way out of this maze but doing much better than before, determined like hell. Never thought about analysing my past creations just did everything and went on the next step. These podcasts inspired me to look back and try to understand "why"-s. It absolutely helps to continue. So... Thanks for keeping me on the track. I owe you one, man.

Ki is one of the most underrated albums in the catalogue. I remember Dev once referring to it as a palate cleanser, and I think that's a great way to put it. I didn't like it so much when it came out, being so into Strapping. But I find myself returning to it when I need my palate cleansed.

Thanks for this Dev. It's really heartening for me, to be coming to similar conclusions to you, in my own way. Before hearing this podcast, in the last few weeks it's like I've been reciting this podcast in my head, and coming to these conclusions. I guess that just validates the idea that we're all in this together, and we're all connected, somehow. That's kind of a central tenet of meditation, as I understand it. My conclusion was exactly: "It's not OK, but that's OK". "Not OK" was no longer that, undefinable, unsolvable, inevitable "it's over". Another way I defined "it's over" was: "is" no longer exists. Whatever that meant... Now I'm heading towards a place where there is no "it's over". There always exists an "is". My connection to "the one" is not severed. Meditation helps a lot, and so does music like yours, and these podcasts. Always seeking new ways to cope. Can never have enough tools in the kit. Feels like I've tipped the balance in my favour. It feels like you have too. Thanks again. Oh yeah and by the way "The quietest heavy metal record ever" really summed KI up perfectly. If a music reviewer hasn't written that yet, they should.

Oh Yeah! Finally here at Ki!! 😁. One of my Favorite Devin Records! I've always felt so deeply connected to the Guitar rift on A Monday, and if you listen closely, whether intentional or not, the tone seems to linger throughout the album, as if it's trying to break through the ugliness, the darkness...like on Heaven Sent or Disruptr! And the way I personally see it, from Lady Helen....into Ki, that tone finds its way through the Darkness, and reveals it's Beauty and light. That's what I love about perception and ones own takeaway from Art and Music! It will be different across the board with people, but nonetheless....all perceptions and ideas are shared, and that's a real connection 🙂✌️❤️

Ki was the album where everything clicked for me, I’d listened to Ghost, Epicloud, AE, Physicist, Decon., AE, and none of it really digested until after I listened to Ki.. the ability to as you say, “regulate” intensity and emotion, move from heavy to calm, and to counterbalance the two was really unique for me to hear. 💚

I can almost imagine the conversation about inspiration and who said the initial quote. Pretty sure it's something SV would say. That would work for most, but obviously we're talking about you (Devin) here :) You're literally the embodiment of what fans desire from an artist they relate and connect to. Writing, emotional connection to what you do, the process, some personal stuff.......FREE, AWESOME, MUSIC.......what's not to like? Keep at it dude. There aren't many artists I've found that touch myself so deeply (not in a 'special place' way lol) with their music, but you take it to another level i your communication and accessibility. You're the fucking GOAT dude. You write the sounds that will be talked about in small circles with others a couple hundred years down the road. I'm really happy for you and glad you love the shit out of what you do. It's obvious in your live footage, and we benefit from that.

Ki remains to this day my favorite, just for the strangeness of its melodies. If I'm not mistaken, this was the first album featuring a female voice (Ché Aimée). Devin often said he loves how a higher-pitched voice adds to his work, and I totally agree. I was a bit surprised he didn't mention it here, of all places, since this was, to me anyway, an important step in the progression of his sound. There's the pre-DTP, all Dev voice, and then there's the DTP and on, so much richer. I would have loved to hear about that, learn how Ché and Anneke and Dev came to work together. Perhaps we'll hear that story later on with Addicted!

Devin, you asked "How are you doing?" Well... I'm 38, got a son of 8, diagnosed with autism. Still non verbal. Next week I'll have to spend 1700 euros to take him to the dentist, cause he needs to underwent full anesthesia, so the dentist can fiz his teeth without him struggling too much. With that said, I'm going to use the money I had to pay my school bills to fix his teeth. I asked my landlord if I could pay almost half the usual rent because of this. He told me that it is OK. Still, It wont make it. I only make +-800 euros month at the hospital as a Health care assistant. Oh, school! I want to become a nurse! I'm at ESEL, Escola Superiror de Enfermagem de Lisboa, Portugal, today was my second day there. I'm scared, Dev... I dont know if I can make it, cause I work 35 hours week, and classes take me 30 hours classes, and you need to add to that another 30 hours week of studying. I can't get another job to balance the bills, I dont know If I can take this any longer. It took me 8 years to get to university, and I'm scared to lose it all now. If I take one more blow to the wallet, I'm out of school. With this, I want to say, thank you, buddie. You've been an inspiration for me, a true exemple of resilience and inspiration. You have failed, but keept strugling. So I must do the same, If I fail at this, now. I accept it, cause in the future, it's all gonna be just fine.
