So if i get this straight. Twitch's plan by switching from a flat rate to a percentage rate, is it allows them to sell more ads. Which means as a user, they are going to show more ads.

Always enjoy your long deep dive videos Devin & always watch to the end. Twitch Turbo is well worth it IMO as the long ad breaks are especially intrusive during live content. And pre-rolls really dissuade you from checking out new streams.

Thanks a lot for this video! Helped me greatly on writing a report about Twitch for an assignment, when there aren't many scholarly articles on recent events regarding Twitch. Hey, Devon! Still here at the special 23:00 deep dive shout out ;) Thanks for all your amazing work on YT and for all the perks I get as a Patron of yours. As a restreamer, I am watching this wondering: will the ad-splits ever matter to me on Twitch? Are they ever going to allow non-exclusivity? Probably not, and now I'm watching this video more out of curiosity on whether or not Twitch will be around in 5 years to see the "Grand Plan" realized, haha :D

Succinct as always Devin! I really do enjoy your content, it's fascinating the entire industry as a whole. That being said, I moved back to pre-roll ads because at one point, Twitch recommended and then decided it knew better and moved it to the recommended with no input from me, the creator, at all, to running 1:30 of ad time every 13 minutes. My viewership was inr eal time going 10-15 -> 4 -> 10-15 -> 4, and every time the ad break was done and I was at 4, it would SLOWLY climb back up to that 10-15. Nah, I'll just run the pre-rolls, have 'em watch once, and call it good.

The only ads I run on my channel are preroll ads because they’re necessary if scheduled ads are turned off. I’d rather someone sit through one ad and have an ad free experience for the duration of my stream than make a few extra bucks. Thanks for putting this video together! As a full time streamer and content creator I really appreciate knowing the metrics of my profession.

Another major asterisk to the 55% revenue split is this caveat… even without taking an incentive you MUST pre-schedule at least 3 mins of ads an hour to get the new 55%. From Twitch: “Starting in August, just set Ads Manager to three minutes (or more) per hour. That’s it, that’s the end of the list. Do that? BAM. You’re qualified and you get a 55% ad revenue split on your payouts.”

[1] They don't do ads as well as youtube because they purchase the ads directly instead of through adsense and it's sitewide instead of based on an algorithm. [2] They basically completely destroy the viewer experience for streams. [3] The revenue is basically trash for affiliates, but nobody should be an affiliate because there are so many better things someone can be doing climbing up to that 1000-5000 viewer rrange, and I'd argue nobody should ever sign a contract for livestreaming that has exclusivity. Literally none of the other platforms do that unelss you sign directly with the company, which would be a multi-million dollar deal so that would make sense to take it. It's weird to me that a standard twitch partner has to basically put their entire streaming career at the mercy of a single company where if for some reason you get banned and not even told why, you're unable to stream and therefore unable to collect revenue from sponsorships, ads, subs, and donations, etc.

Regarding the grand plan, it sounds like Amazon want to run personalised ads across Twitch, Prime Video and Music like their competitors. It would be interesting to know the percentage of viewers on Twitch who are Prime members to see if this is feasible, as the only way I can see Amazon collecting enough data on demographics is through Prime accounts and their purchase / viewing history.

7:55 I thought most people were just taking a net value and multiplying the gains to determine their true value. This makes an assumption that the fees/ad "charges" are % and not a flat fee. 11:25 Probably will be mentioned, but it was inferred you are giving up the ability to run your own ad timings and switch to an automated system. 21:00 that graph seems dodgy, unless they have a way to grab everyone's revenue information (which I figured would be private) even those who never receive a minimum twitch payout. Also "Excludes users who didn't make any revenue" but the graph does start at $1 Personal opinion on ads, I love ads... I hate the ads in which twitch personalities make an appearance, they are so bland, so uninspiring, and most are literally them in their studio with zero effort and are 100% zero interest in actually checking the product out. Other than that, decent video.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. 23 minutes in and I'm suspicious that Twitch is misrepresenting their server costs, pocketing Ad revenues, and giving smaller creators the shaft to increase their profit margins. I know they pay a fraction for hosting their servers, since Amazon owns the servers they use. With these worse contracts, it seems like streamers, especially smaller ones, are getting exploited.
